Who's racing Tour Divide on a singlespeed this year? I know Kent Petersen is one, who else?

   Anyone attempting it fixed?

Best of luck Eric. I noticed that Pete Faeth is on a SS too. That's three.

Not sure as I know the people that built their frames, but not the riders by name. I do know that one of them is a British woman, if that helps.

Thanks for the updates. Five so far. I follow everyone in the race, it's just that as a singlespeed only rider I follow the SS people just a bit more closely. It would be fun to see what gearing everyone is using. I believe Kent is at 52 gear inches and Chris Plesko did it at about 55 inches. To me that seems like the range I'd want to use. On my bike set up for bikepacking (an OS Blackbuck) I'm currently riding at 55. For this area (northern NJ) that works out great on pavement, dirt roads and some singletrack. It's too high to get up any of the steeper trails, at least for me. 52 inches was a nice all around gearing but the pavement sections were a little slow. On my SS mountain bike I run at about 46 inches, which is a common gearing in this area.

Hi all... I only rarely ride SS, but I don't mind speculating here as to the Why's. If anyone knows better, let's hear it.

I'm thinking it's mainly about pacing. An SS is more like hiking. One stride-length. Seems likely that you coast the downhills. Otherwise, you trundle-spin the flats/mellows and work the up's -- just like wearin' boots. You'd pick a gear where the up's aren't a (knee)strain, I suppose.

The second factor might be simplicity and durability. The brain has fewer worries as you go along -- it's possible that there's noticeably less fatigue when "what's my gear?" is just not part of the picture -- and there's less that can happen to the bike.

Lastly: wouldn't it save, like, 3 whole sweet pounds?

PS: I wonder if any use flip-flops or (what would seem to be lame) tensioners.

The whys of singlespeed have been discussed a million times (lighter, more reliable, easier to maintain, less expensive, simpler, looks better, all important perhaps, but secondary reasons). Some people find it more enjoyable, simple as that.

If I wanted to make riding easy I'd get a motor. There is some interesting speculation as to just how much harder a SS is on a course like the GDR. Perhaps not as much as people think. On the right offroad course a SS can be at least as fast as a gearie, faster in certain conditions. Bike weight is a minor consideration for most, IMO.

Flip flops as in a flip flop hub with a cog/freewheel on both sides? If they're not the same number of teeth the bike is a two speed, *not* a singlespeed. No reason why you couldn't ride it and set the TWO SPEED record.

  Five people, any more?

Hi! My husband is a single speeder and a first timer. I posted on another post that his chain wheel broke in half after Elkford and he walk/cruised his bike to Sparwood. He got it fixed at 10 when the bike shop opened. Whew!

I was wondering why he dropped back. His chainwheel? Darn. I wonder if he lost a couple of chainring bolts? He was flying before it happened.

Yea..he mentioned something about the bolts. He wasn't happy watching all the guys take off this morning while he waited until the bike shop opened. He seems to be catching up with the rest of them. The bike shop had someone deliver the part to him. Thank goodness. I wonder when he will cross the border?
