I assume you have a GPX based on the pics. I can help out with the singletrack around Escondido/San Diego if you need it. I assume you are taking the some of the Sea to Sea trail?

My involvement is as support, encouragement and stoker of the fire. The boots on the ground and overall badassery behind this is Brendan Collier.
But to answer, there will be a GPX soon and I do believe Sea to Sea is in... maybe even the section of a billion goat heads. I may be wrong on that last bit.
I don't know if the bit in SD is in need of any tracks... I think the south side of Salton Sea is the only bit not fully recon'ed.

Looks like a beautiful course. I'm definitely intrigued. For those that know the course better, I'm curious what you think about the viability of riding it on a singlespeed. I mainly ask because my current bike options are a little limited right now. If I can put a kit together by April, it's basically going to either have to be on my Fatback or Singlespeed Karate Monkey. So I guess my question is, what is a bigger handicap, fat bike or singlespeed? Thanks in advance!
Also, when do you think the GPS track will be available?

It's tempting, but I'm not the most proficient singlespeeder. The climbs may just work against me enough to the point of throwing my knee out and not finishing. This will be a fun puzzle, though, figuring out how I can take my melee of bikes and make them into something that will work for me in a self-supported summer ride. I've been wanted to piece together a touring rig again anyway, so this is the perfect excuse. In all likelihood I'll just put a few gears back on the Karate Monkey. She's an old, heavy horse, but at least I've swapped out a few of the more busted parts since the Tour Divide. Same wheels still, however. Hmmmm.

HMMM.. this one is very tempting for myself. I grew up riding most of this trail either on a bicycle or motorcycle. I would guess that a fat bike would be the best weapon for this ride with the amount of sand in the desert or at least high volume tires depending on the exact route. The only bummer is going to be the heat that time of year, last year was well into the 100's in Phoenix at 1000' Elevation. the salton sea is -30 or so and always hotter than Phoenix. Even the oroflame area was hot last year around that time. I am planning to ride to Slab City in the next couple weeks, i ll check out that route north of there. I remember riding it on a motorcycle once before and wished i had a paddle tire, but there are a few roads going north from mammoth wash some were harder than others. Is there a GPX file for that route yet? Sounds way cool.

You definitely don't need a fat bike. Plain old ordinary average mountain bike all the way.

Regarding weather, if we continue to get the non-winter we're having it could be hot. However, for the last two years we've had "fluke" snowstorms that weekend and have about a foot of snow in the mountains. We could get anything.

Great to have a home area event! And in the spring, too, just as I was looking for ideas. So that weekend is already marked on my calendar. As reliable as Southern California weather is almost all year (and gentle, yesterday was a balmy 65-70 in the Santa Monica mountains), late winter/early spring is the least predictable. Last year, the Julian Death March had to move the date because of a storm and even at the changed date, it was below 30 in the morning when we got up. Warmed up quickly and was a pleasant day, although would be harder on an overnight. Better than 100 degrees, which could happen in Anza-Borrego just as easily (and maybe more likely). The Oriflamme climb was almost pleasant (at least temperature, still a vicious climb). |

I am signed up and super excited but I have no experience with SoCal. If you guys don't mind, the Hub Blog is still under construction on this topic, can I ask a few questions? Itching for GPS files to get some of my own answers.
I read SS would be great, so an all rigid SS still a good option? How fat a tire do you guys think is minimum for that desert, I have ridden in Phoenix and Sedona, is that similar to Salton and Anza Borrego? Thorns? Is Stans in that heat an ok sealant, I have heard of issues with high heat and some sealants (I should check Stans site on this one)?
Thanks in advance if you help with a few answers, if ever in NorCal I'll help as needed.

Ive been reconning for this race a bunch around the san diego area and from what I've seen its going to be awesome, so excited to race this course!
I was just thinking we have a whole bunch of so-cal guys doing this race, is anyone interested in setting up some carpools / hotel shares for the night before the race?
