Lots of talk here about a two way race between Kurt and Jefe.  But nobo Paul A. is just behind them in terms of mileage and appears to be closing the gap this morning.  Paul is a guy who barely slept his last 5 days rowing across the Atlantic and pulled out an incredible burst of speed for his final two days in that race.  The sobo leaders have heat, smoke and rough terrain.  Kurt had a long sleep and looks set to ride to the end.  Jefe had a short sleep but from what I've read here the past couple of weeks I believe he will also push all the way through to the end.

From the information I see as of a few minutes ago Paul is 280 miles from Banff; Kurt and Jefe are 240 miles from AW.

Paul is now into his home territory - whichever route he takes (re-routes or Canadian flathead) he knows this rest of the terrain very well.  We will know in the next few hours if he chooses the Canadian Flathead and in that case with the snow it will likely add a day and we will see him in Banff on Sunday.  But if he sticks to the re-routes which he has done so far then he has allot of paved roads to Sparwood and then forestry roads from Sparwood to Banff, all of it terrain that he knows well and has ridden many times.  He is sure to get a boost as he rides through his home town later this morning and he is well rested from last night.  If Paul stays on the re-routes then I believe he will go non-stop to Banff.  That will give us a straight up comparison with the sobo's and then my money is on:

1. Paul A
2. Kurt
3. Jefe

Race hard guys and stay safe.  Going to be an exciting day just watching the final push from the leaders!

Wherever the top 3 finish I say that Justin Simoni wins a new prize category for most doggedly determined racer out there anywhere in the field!  We have lots more TD to follow this year as JS makes his way south!

Still a lot that can happen with 240-280mi to go.
Knock on wood they stay mechanical and injury free so no judgement calls are needed a la Contador/Schleck.
Great ride by Aidan further closing the gap, will he make up the deficit by AW? Looks like it will grow as he starts to climb and #4/5 descend.
I'd put money on either KR or JB in roughly 15:23:30.
I'm pulling for JB but he has his cards stacked against him with KR in the dirver's seat now.

I am going to pull for Kurt, I am sure Jefe is a really nice guy as well but Kurt stopped to say hello. And Kurt has gears to use on the last bit.

Bob Anderson looked in as good a shape as any who have stopped here and is giving away quite a few years.

I will also give a shout out for David Bruno, he also is a bit older and his suspension gave out just after the start.

An Important Announcement

Yesterday I was contacted by a fan of the Tour Divide Race who has offered up a Cordillera sales matching challenge to the entire Bikepacking community!

For every Cordillera Volume 2 sold from now until the day that Justin Simoni reaches Antelope Wells (or quits) the donor will make an equal donation to Linnaea Blumenthal's college fund. He's matching the full $15 purchase price for each book sold!

This is incredible! Now, thanks to this generous match over $21 from each and every Cordillera Volume 2 sold will go directly into Linnaea Blumenthal's college 529 savings plan.

There is no maximum donation. The donor is prepared to lay out some serious cash to help Linnaea but he's challenging all of us pull a little harder too. So please everyone, even if you have purchased a copy of the Cordillera please buy another copy or two. They make great gifts and have been getting terrific reviews so I know your friends and family will want their own copy.

If you don't know about the Cordillera Volume 2 check out this thread: http://www.bikepacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,2096.0.html

Purchase your copy here: https://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/the-cordillera/15659154

Thanks everyone and please help spread the word via Facebook, blogs, club emails, etc.

Go Kurt, JB, Caroline, Norb, JP, and everyone else. I'll not be getting any yard work done today.

I just purchased mine thanks to this link and information.  What a great cause for Linnaea Blumenthal and also for feat that Justin Simoni is undertaking.  Thanks for posting this Eric.  Keep Rolling Justin - we are  all pulling for you!

So true ... a day on the lake vs sitting in front of the computer has never been harder to make.
Refresh, refresh, refresh... my F5 button is getting a workout.

Eric,  I would like a clarification.  I already purchased V. II the first day it came out, with this offer I would buy more copies but the problem is I don't know any deserving cyclist to give them too (plenty of undeserving ones).  Do you have a way of getting them to kids interested in cycling who can't afford them or maybe I should just have them sent to juvenile halls or group homes.  Any ideas on this would be appreciated.

Go Aidan!

maybe I should just have them sent to juvenile halls

Maybe that guy who stole ML's bike last year would end up with one!

I keep a few in my glove box and give them out to touring cyclists I see, at events, etc. It's pretty easy to find people who are interested. If you have some extra though and really can't give them out I'll give you my UPS number and you can ship them to me. I do a little outreach from time to time.

Mattinausting just PM'd me with this tip: use the coupon code SUNSHINE305 for a significant discount.

Using that won't take anything away from the fundraising but it will save you money.

Thanks

Eric

Uncloaking from lurking mode to do a quick shout out to the other KR: my compatriot and fellow Belgian Kim Raeymaekers, who's doing a steady middle-of-the-pack ride and just passed through Salida.

I know the place where he lives (Turnhout, BE): there is no point in a radius of 50 miles around it higher than about 300 feet; the hardest climbs are highway overpasses; snowcapped peaks and dry desert heat are as alien there as Mars. Not sure how he trained for this - he may have done many hill repeats on said overpasses, or took long vacations in the Alps, but he seems to be doing pretty good.

I will now continue to watch the fascinating and final 'sprint' between KR and JB unfold...

Dave Goldberg called in from Del Norte. Dejay Birtch called in from Del Norte. Fixie Dave Nice called in from Lordsberg. He’s still waiting for his bike. He has put up a Facebook page called Greyhound Bicycle Hostage in protest! Eric Bruntjen called in with an important message regarding The Cordillera II. As he notes above, someone has agreed to match the sales price of every copy sold from now until Justin Simoni finishes his ride! This is a great opportunity to DOUBLE your help for Linnaea Blumenthal and get a great book to boot!

You can get the audio here, via RSS,  or on iTunes!

That's a funny image.

Considering his home topography he's doing especially well.

Justin Simoni's SPOT hasn't woken up yet today. When will we know what he's up to?

Paul's ride is super impressive - it's awesome that he's overcome the challenge of back-to-front navigation and is still in the hunt. His last day's climbing looks relatively challenging (c.f. the run to Mexico) so to pass Kurt & Jefe would be truely superhuman!

Oh. And, more thanks to all the photo contributors (and the good folk at Trackleaders, of course)
