Messing with destiny I rode 15 min w/ DB and 15 min w/KR. Dave is all cool calm and collected being 2 days behind the leaders  doing an itt. He was glad to have an escort to the dairy queen with no gps. Dropped him there and found Kurt climbing the Dillon dam, he was happy about the new cues thru the bike paths here. Some news from KR is  they are all suffering from various pains, EP had a bonker from all that caffeine I suppose.  I saw JB climbing the dam from my deck, he was climbing very slow and prob didnt hear me yell. Kurt mentioned hand, ankle and knee pain, but I dont know who had what.
KR was flying on that little climb up the dam and  with the tailwind south toward Breck. He was putting some time on JB and DB this afternoon. EP is the mystery shopper here. I had some batteries for EP but I`m glad I didnt see the rookies and mess w/ destiny.I think were at a bit of a crux in the race.
Supposed to be some weather coming in and the lead pack will be in the banana belt by then, the main pack will see lows temps about 30 and 100% chance of precip called for here in Silverthorne. This should be the last of the coldness after Boraes.
DB and KR both said their mentally torn up but they seemed focused pretty good on what they are doing.
Oh yea, Kurt said no way would the north bounders make it thru the snow up north. Northbounders  dont get the detours??? he thought that would be a big deal.

Thanks for the reports ComoDepot!  Salida tonight?  70 miles out at 8:30pm?  Ambitious!  Wonder if he can skip Absolute... last good shop until Silver City...

Looking forward to catching up with a leader or two at the shop tomorrow.  Getting into the final stretch of the race for them!  Exciting!

1st NB racer, Paul Attalla should be up into his 1st real snow tomorrow -- up past Pinedale, click on the map layer ‘Snowy main GDMBR option’ to see the area.

If there is significant snow across this Union Pass area it will probably not be anything  like the snow passes Justin has fought through so far.  This area is more of a convergence of watersheads rather than typical mountain pass and is relatively flat for long stretches.  Hence it could mean long drawn out slogging with no downhill relief  on the other side.  Or perhaps it could just be short slogs thru the mud from snow bank to snow bank.

Big bear area, long distance, take extra food & be safe Paul!!

Be interesting to see how it all plays out

Just randomly looking at some Spot’s and notice that NB Steve Moore from Wimberly, TX has got the ol TDR timing game going his way today.  He seems to have started his day quite early around 4:00am but is about to roll into Salida when all the resupply points are still open (except maybe the bike shop??).

Anyway, Steve will have his choice of food and if he wants lodging.  And if he feels good he could eat a nice full meal, resupply and then start the long climb out of Salida.

If the weather is good, riding that long climb in the cool dark with a relaxed leisurely “taper off the day” pace would be my choice.  Then when the sleep’ies set in good and hard-- lots of nice camping (dry though) to be had in the area, and that warm fuzzy feeling knowing a big climb is behind you.

This is Steve's wife writing.  Yes, he made it to the bike shop before they closed, and said they were doing amazing work on his bike.  He said the headwind has been absolutely insane (peddling hard just to keep moving while going downhill).  Not sure what his plan is for the evening -- I am waiting to hear back from him.  Thanks for checking on him.  I know he is a big fan of yours.

As for his story:
Steve is an ER physician who took turning 40 kind of hard and decided he needed a great physical challenge to mark the occasion, so he planned to bike across Texas.  His time off from work got cut short, so instead he biked from our house in Central Texas to West Texas (some 400+ miles).  He had such a good time, and soon after (Spring 2010) read about the GDMBR.  At that point, he was hooked.  He is not and never has been an ultra-racer or ultra-runner.  In fact, he really just took up biking a few years ago after injuring his knees from running.  But he is the most determined (perhaps, just downright stubborn) person I have ever met.  We have three young children (6, 3, and 1) who miss him very much this Father’s Day, but we are so incredibly proud of what he has undertaken and accomplished so far.  Keep ‘em rolling, Steve!

Ethan is back tracking, coming up Boreas behind Jefe.

Looks like mid-pack has been dealing with rough weather in the push across Wyoming.

Go Paul go! He seems like the energizer bunny, but anyone who rows across the atlantic has the mindset. Hope the snow, melt, flooding is such that he can keep it safe.

Aidan Harding's Spot is stopped at a big American grocery store in Steamboat.  I suspect he is a very very happy camper right now as he will be able to re-supply with all kinds of fresh 'real' food goodies.  I believe part of Aidan's pre race strategy is to eat/re-fuel and rest/recover in such a way that he maintains his energy level to ride vs walk his SS up the climbs.  Now is about the time when such a strategy could start to pay off.  Will he slowly start to gap the racers near him?  Will he be able to reel in anyone between here and AW?

Go Aidan

David - saw that. Did you see him go by? Surprised he did not stop! Jefe does seem to like to just keep going, its how he has done the CTR well in the past.

I wonder if Justin Voss has stopped for the night? Or if his Spot just skipping a uplink or two?  And I really wonder if he knows just how close he is to the Golden Spike, soft bed, hot food and cool drink, oh and Mike Hall in 8th place?

Go Justin

It was dark, thunder and lightening.

I had put some food aside, I was expecting him to at least top up his bottles.

David Horton called in from Driggs to recap his rough ride. Dan Simas called in from Boulder. He’s still battling stomach issues. Martin Wimpenny called in from Jackson. And Daniel Bayley called in from Ashton.
