A few pics from our two SoBo leaders as they transitioned in Salida.
Kurt got a drop at the PO, then ate a Safeway breakfast before heading out.
Uhh.... where's Jefe? Ethan? Caroline? Mike Dion had the smartphone hookup.
Jefe's airplane lost its propeller in gale force headwinds coming into Rawlins. He's still flying though!
Giant salad, three huge burritos at Mama D's. The second one was supposed to be "To Go" but that disappeared too, so he had to order another for the road. He said he simply cannot eat enough out there and has run out of food a few times.
Scot Banks got his bike rolling at least 5% faster/smoother. Might it be enough to bury Kurt? We'll see. It was really interesting to get a glimpse into both of their mindsets right now. I feel like I know them well enough to say this confidently: it's anyone's race, and it's going to be a good one.

Matthew, thanks for posting that email from Justin. Great to get a sense of what he walked / rode / pushed through.

Jake Kirkpatrick called in to say he’s pulling out. He’s got a bug or something and isn’t feeling well. Take care and get well, Jake! You can get the audio here, via RSS, or on iTunes!

Dylan Taylor started with the other 9 riders from Atlantic City this morning but now at 3pm he is 30 miles behind the group with 90 to go until Rawlins. Could be a very long night for him.

I think that he got into Atlantic City a little later than the others last night, and left a bit later this morning too. In his last call-in, he mentions that he lost some time having a hub rebuilt in Jackson--and it looks like he's still trying to close the gap. Hopefully he's not having any more mechanical issues today. He's strong, so I expect that he'll catch the group again soon!

Kurt over marshal pass. Boys in chase outta Absolute Bikes in Salida. ITT Dave in there with em. Aidan on it. Goldburg still not spotting. NB'ers riding well. OK now back to my "no internet" place.
Kurts about to ride through some sweet terrain. Always liked that section.

Dave Bruno was in and out of Salida much quicker than either of our leaders. I asked him how he is able to keep pace with them after having been caught and his response was, "because I'm so happy. I really am having a good time out here." He was indeed anxious to get back out on the route. Awesome.

Ain't nobody from the chase group of 4 SoBo's catching one of the 3 leaders, unless leaders stop somewhere for a day. Leaders are now a full 3 to 4 passes ahead, depending on when and how you count 'em. And I'm not so sure the gap from 3rd to 2nd will ever close. I don't know this Ethan guy, but if he catches up to JB or KR, I will be thoroughly impressed. I'm thinking it's a 2-horse race now. Of course, there's plenty of time and distance left to decide.
Euro-train is hip-to-hip as usual, and it doesn't look like they stopped at the Brush Mtn Lodge ... anxious to get over the snowed in pass and into Steamboat before dark?
I'm secretly hoping JVoss makes it a quick stop in 'boat and keeps on rolling, making over the Gore Pass area and down the Colo River tonight.

euro train is taking a PAINFULLY long detour into Steamboat. Talk about brutal, this detour takes them far off route and adds a big chunk of extra mileage to their ride. I thought they had a crafty plan like to take a nap and wait for the snow to firm up after sunset before slogging over the pass. Poor guys, I dont think there will even be a gas station open when they hit Hayden at midnight.

Can someone tell me approx what route mile Brush Mtn Lodge is located around? Just wondering when my hubby and his riding buddies might get there. He's heading into the Great Basin in the next day or so.
Thanks! Elizabeth

We met up with him south of Marathon, which is probably the way you'd go to Terlingua (Viva Terlingua! :-). For the most part, I am pretty sure it was ACA's southern tier route (which runs in front of our house), with some modifications. I'd have to ask him to get the full details on the route. He went past Lost Maples, through Leakey, Del Rio, Sanderson, etc.
For sure you cannot ride across Texas without going through Leakey. I'll check out the ACA route ...didn't know of it's existence.

Funny, did it really snow enough that there weren't tracks to follow, 'cuz I thought the area where they made the wrong turn was under snow, but I guess not yet in that location.
