Jefe was looking in good spirits on the tail of Marshal Pass. Must be hard to turn down the road when your bed at home is only 20 miles away....

Go Jefe and Ethan!

Funny, did it really snow enough that there weren't tracks to follow, 'cuz  I thought the area where they made the wrong turn was under snow, but I guess not yet in that location.

It likely snowed enough to cover the tracks. But then I'm not there; I'm in this warm house hoping those guys are safe.

I don't know this Ethan guy, but if he catches up to JB or KR, I will be thoroughly impressed.

I'd probably not rule Ethan out.

2 CTR wins and this little gem:

1 6:45:45 Dave Wiens
2 6:47:41 Lance Armstrong
3 7:20:52 Manuel Prado
4 7:27:54 Ethan Passant

From Denver Post on 08 Leadville 100:

Lance Armstrong leads Dave Wiens up the brutal Powerline climb. The two have about 70 miles under their belt here, not even three-quarters done with the Leadville Trail 100. They raced tire-to-tire for almost the whole race. The next racer is 30 minutes back. It’s either of theirs to lose. Wiens pulled ahead atop the climb, but Armstrong caught him at Hagerman Pass Road and the two raced on pavement down to Turquoise Lake and back up to the St. Kevins climb. That’s where LA surrendered and Wiens took ‘er home for his sixth consecutive title and yet another course record: 6:45:45. Armstrong finished second at 6:47:41. Manny Prado, of Costa Rica, took third at 7:20:53 and Crested Butte ski patroller Ethan Passant took fourth at 7:28:00. Passant, by the way, just last week won the 530-mile, fully self-supported Colorado Trail Race with a new record: 5 days, 2 hours, 30 minutes.

Dan Simas called in from Atlantic City. He’s still battling issues with his stomach and is contemplating pulling out. Justin Voss called in from Steamboat Springs. And Paul Jobling called in from Mack’s Inn to say he’s pulling out. He’s been icing a twisted knee. He’s very reluctant to pull out so maybe things will improve overnight.

Lots of folks entering the crux for them mentally and physically. Even in Justin's voice you can hear the wear of trudging over the pass in his voice. So many times, though, the thing you need to lift you up is just down the road. Injuries, however, have no healing words only time.

If my memory serves me right, he also got a bladder infection of sorts right after the CTR and was on antibiotics before/during the Leadville. He also did a portion of the state road race weekend in Salida, i *think* I might be merging my years.

Regardless Ethan just keeps smiling and is the king of doing a TON all year round.

Josh Shifferly is also an undercover CB resident that skis more days in the backcountry on huge tours than anyone I know.

Jefe, well he is no 'rookie' in the ultra arena. Surprised he is not on his rohloff equipped bike.

Go team Crested Butte/Gunnison! I still think there is something in the water there with the number of great athletes.

wonder if Paul knows about using Kinesio tape on sore, inflamed knees?  Works wonders in some cases by 'lifting' the knee cap a tiny bit--can be night & day difference in the pain as the cap no longer rubs in it's usual position and imo might even speed up the healing process just a bit

Oh, well hope to see his Spot move on down the route in the morning

Just wanted to do a quick shoutout to my husband - Norb DeKerchove from Boise, Idaho. For anyone tracking him in the Driggs, Victor area of his short pass through the home state, many thanks! He said you all were amazing in your interest and willingness to help him out with anything he might need. Seems several folks had been watching for him down there and greeting the native son with open arms. Wish I could have been there too. He's doing great though and getting near the halfway point slogging through the Great Basin tonight. Still riding 9 minutes ago. occasion14 We salute you - every night precisely at 8 p.m. with cheers and drinks in your honor, Norb!

You know you are in a special place when some locals pass you on a climb and you notice they are pregnant.

I was wondering how many of the riders use Kinesio Tape. I use it in my massage practice on athletes and am a CKTP, but the only issues it that you can't always tape yourself well and it takes a little bit of practice to get it right.

Justin Voss’s (8th place SB) last call in says a lot.  To me he sounds like he still has his race face on and is not just ‘surviving’.  He said he wants to reel in the racers ahead of him.  Imo if Justin really wants to catch any of the riders in front of him three things have to happen.

1) Justin needs to stay tough mentally and focused, head down just about all day long, ie NO lost time during the day due to extended stops or excessive picture taking & chatting during re-supply

2) Up his total daily hours just a bit IE put 1 to 2 ‘ride hours’ more each day than the riders in front of him are doing, best way to do this is add the hour(s) where he rides the strongest—for most this is at the end rather than the start of the day, but regardless he “needs to consistently chip away” with more ride time (and at this point it is almost impossible to add 1-2 hours into the established routine, but could be done—if the body allows it)

3) Catch a break ie: he needs one or more of the racers in front to stumble some how some way and fall off pace for ½ day or more (I know this sounds tough but it is a race and everyone has at least 1 stumble in the TDR)

oh and if he were to make such an attempt along the lines outlined, he also might consider turning off his Spot and not mention what he is doing during his call ins

go Justin

BTW, Folks, I'll be pulling some late nighters over the next several days off and on. If I don't get stuff out quickly it's because I'm asleep. :|

Kinesio Tape—I am a big fan

I have a bad knee that is easily tweaked.  And during my TDR training & learning to use aerobars I developed real debilitating Achilles injury/pain for the 1st time in my life.    Kinesio tape got me through training, to the start line in Banff, and pre-cut tape in my kit helped me all the way to the Colorado/NM border.  After I hit NM my legs and knees were magically supplanted from some cycling alien and could churn away all day with nary a twitch and no more need for tape. (To bad the alien took them back after a few weeks post TDR)

I am sure I did not tape up my Achilles nearly as well as a pro but it did save my race just out of Rawlins.  And I found my knees pretty easy to tape up ‘in a most basic manner’ from day 1 of using the tape.

To highlight the ‘lifting’ effect on my left knee when tweaked—without the tape I feel mild pain that will steadily get worse, with the tape the pain will go 90% away and stabilize.  If I pull on my knee warmers, just that tiny bit of additional ‘squeeze’ on the left knee will bring back the pain.

During the early days of my TDR I would peel the left knee warmer down and bunch it right under the knee cap till the cold forced me to pull it back up.  As the TDR wore on my knees actually got better—I attribute some of this to reduced inflammation that could only have happened by using the tape religiously during the 1st two weeks.

Norb's sister here - it seems to have been a great day for him today.  Love following all the riders.  But it makes getting anything done almost impossible.  Wishing Norb and all the riders safety!

In regards to being passed by pregnant ladies, it's a common theme there! And the ladies dont slow down after having a child~!

Thanks for sharing! I love Kinesio Tape. Good idea with the precut pieces and basically, if your pain decreased, you did an awesome job of taping.  thumbsup (It would take some gymnastics for me to tape my own Achilles! Knees are fairly straightforward - I can reach those.  icon_biggrin)
