It's time to quell the beastly 60+ page 2011 Tour Divide thread in favor of a new TD thread focused on good old fashioned armchair race analysis. TD's bellwether Rob Colliver (ITT-D) got things moving today, just ahead of Friday's Grand Depart. He's been making pretty good time < www.tourdivide.org/leaderboard > as he crosses the border into BC. Conditions must be OK so far, but the big unknown is the segment he's into now above Elk Lakes. Reports from 10 days ago described snow all the way to Tobermory Cabin at mile 70-ish, 2 miles south on Elk River Rd. It will be interesting to see if he chooses to bivy (as planned) at the cabin or push on. Here's to another dynamic La Nina racing year along the Divide. Scenic Elk Pass descent into Elk Lakes Provincial Park. This fireroad is reportedly under a meter + of snow.

Thanks for starting the new thread ... same thought had been on my mind for a few days now. Not sure how productive I'll be for the firm at the office over the next few weeks, but certainly less so than usual.
I'm secretly hoping for a push past the cabin by the rabbit with the yellow spot dot, to take advantage of relatively clear skies. But who knows what this rider is feeling, experiencing, and just what he's riding (walking) through. Hopefully it's all sunshine, roses, and bliss.

I think it was Elk pass last year where i got my first thought that i may be in deep... I remember a super sponge like ground that held on to my tire like fly paper. I stopped twice to see if my brakes were locked up. I remember thinking that i could have walked faster than i was moving, but my pride would not allow it. The downhill run on the flip side was so beautiful and fun that it seemed totally worth it. I could not imagine passing that in snow. I remember quite a few fallen trees on the down hill side that made things interesting. This is going to be a fun one to watch.. If you hurry, you can catch a parade in Elkford sat am around lunch..... if it is an annual event that is. Wish i could be there... Good luck to all!!

Another request to the Trackleaders.com folks: could we have an optional overlay of elevation on the speed vs distance plot so we can see where the up and downhills are?

So, now that we're in an arm chair discussion forum... who's gonna win the SB crown? Kurt is by default the fav since Loebeck is starting from AW on the 25th. Ethan Passant is tough, and familiar with snow Jefe's tough. Anyone have any insight on the other racers. Any road-riders or ultra runners in the mix?

Did they decide to go through the flathead wilderness, after all? I could have sworn when I looked earlier today the route was through Fernie... now it bypasses Fernie. Check for yourself. http://tourdivide.org/leaderboard

Do you think they'll show the alternate routes on the tracking map? It would be interesting to see how many racers are opting for alternates vs. main route.

Earlier today the tracking map had the route going through Fernie, it has just changed in the last few hours. Now it shows the route going through the Flathead.

It should be showing the Fernie route now. Google's caching is strange, and is responsible for switching back and forth. I just forced it to the route with all snow detours. We will also be showing the (snowy) GDMBR sections, either loaded by default or in the "Map Layers" menu. Just waiting for a determination from Matthew on that. Thanks for the suggestions - "Race Discussion" link is updated, and plotting elevation over the speed graphs would be sweet -- great idea. Keep those ideas coming, but it'll will have to wait a bit as we get TD started with the current "V2" tracker, a total rewrite of our software. Can't wait to get this party started, though I suppose it has a bit already with a few yellow dots already moving out there.

Scott,
Is there a way to know the "official" start times of the ITT riders? To know the Day:Hour:Minute time frame of their journey would be interesting to know as well (maybe on their personal profile page?).
Great job and many thanks to you, Matthew and crew for your efforts. I'm taking it all in as I plan my own adventure in 2012 and learning so much from the generous contributions of veteran riders.
So grateful ...

You're certainly welcome -- this is fun stuff! We'll at least get start ITT date/time in the info window and personal page. Hoping to get a separate leaderboard for ITTs, but that'll have to wait. Too many other fires to put out / check now.

So, is there not a start time? Or is it, just get there, then go?
