I'm not surprised to wake up and find Jefe in the lead.  The guy can forgo sleep like no one else.  Looks like he's the only one that didn't get a tent icon last night (tent = stop for 4 or more hours).

He is a freak of nature.

Just under 230 miles in now for Jefe on no sleep.

I'm a bit bummed about the situation with Jake Kirkpatrick and Dejay Birtch. What happened to them? More importantly...where's more pics of Jakes Blacksheep?

All top athletes are freaks of nature. The rest of us are normal people.

They both have Delorme PN-60 GPS/SPOT combo units, and apparently have not been successful in getting them into track mode.  Both got "OK" messages in Banff, but nothing since race start.  I do not have much experience with the PN-60, but based on my PN-30, I wouldn't be surprised if the user interface isn't so friendly.

Oh, and Jefe did stop for a nap on the side of the road, but only for a few hours.

Jefe has been quietly visualizing (and obsessing) about this race for a few years now. He is hungry. It will be interesting to see him make the transition required for grand tour racing. He is excellent at not sleeping for middle distance racing, but TD goes beyond that. One must take care to sleep more. There is an emotional component, too, that cannot be blocked out as it can for 500-mile races. What people do with that emotion and whether they use it as fuel or not is one of the big selectors.

Dejay and Jake were in Elkford, BC as of 2130 day-1. Great athletes they are, but they find themselves at the bottom of a rather steep ultra bikepacking curve facing a growing gap between them and the front of the race. It will be interesting to see how they approach this position. Will they make the transition quickly and decide to close the gap, or will they be content to dwell in the pack--a place more foreign to them in shorter events? Let's hope they get their Delorme units figured out so we can watch their mental game unfold. It's mostly about that, after all

The guestimated Fitzsimmons Creek Rd snow coverage based on Rob Colliver's avg. speed yesterday is marked on the Stryker detour map here: http://tinyurl.com/3vb6uzr It's going to be a real factor for the leaders in the mid-day sun. He/she who held on to their snowshoes for this final big snow hike will have a real advantage.

Passant's Spot is either not working or something is up. Hopefully he's along side of Jefe and Kurt....those 3 pushing each other could be quite the experience. Awesome.

Jefe won't (shouldn't) stay with Kurt and Ethan. I think, as Matt and Scott alluded to, his strategy is usually to pace himself correctly and not sleep. Go Jefe! It's worked n the past. But as Matt said, this ain't a 4.5 day race.

Man, this is exciting racing. I can't believe how fast the reroute is so far.

We just rec'd an OK (1-time track point) from Ethan's SPOT-1. He hasn't used a SPOT-1 in a while. This is a last-minute borrowed unit. Let's hope he can figure it out and we aren't forced to live off occasional OK msgs.

Looks like Jefe Branham of Gunnison Colorado is riding through the night. His spot is moving. At 3am he is at mile 192 and passed ITT riders Errin Vasquez and Erik Mathy who stopped for the night in Elko at mile 187.

I am really interested to see what happens to some of the CTR fast guys after 5-6 days into the TD. Things change alot around then and I'm afraid Jefe will regret not sleeping. If he is trying to drop Aidan Harding, he has his work cut out for him.  Aidan gets even stronger after a few days. Ethan Passant wisely caught some shut eye but not sure how much. He can smoke the CTR. How will he be after a week? Will be interesting...
This race is going fast. I think the speed of it will weed out more than the terrain will in this years edition. Those who make it to Wyoming will have alot of flat road to get them to the Great Basin. Who can red line it and keep up??

Yep, that's why we looked beyond into the Flathead. The old main route is lot's of pave and keeps to the valleys.

New report in on Stryker detour. HUGE hike-a-bike coming up. Maybe 10 miles. Devastating snow totals in this mountain range this year. I cannot imagine running the main route across this range twice. Yep, Justin called it re. Flathead. Let's see if he can claim it!

Is there a plan/way to track NoBo riders relative to their southern start? The leader board has all of them with a next waypoint of Elkford and some really wacky statistics.

Here in Las Vegas, rooting for our local, Mark Erhart, but his tracker hasn't moved since yesterday. Anyone have any news? Thanks!

Dejay and Jake are currently sat next to me as a big group of us eat lunch in Eureka.

They should be tracking when we leave here.
