Quote Justin Simoni June 9, 2011: "There are a TON of alternative routes because of snow, but I intend to tramp through as many as I can via snowshoes and pure, unadulterated will. And foolishness. I may be dead last, but one of the few that does the, "standard" route. We can all only collectively see what happens."

Good luck Justin!!!

Yep - looks like he's off again! Never met the guy but you can't help but be impressed by his sense of adventure.  I have made a small donation to his fund (part of which is for charity http://gdmbr.justinsimoni.com/the-last-big-push.html ) just because I'd like to buy him a drink and say, well done!   thumbsup

Is CW on a road bike or something?  He seems to stick to the pavement.

Thanks for that link! I donated too because I wanted to buy him a drink or snack, too! Looking forward to following his journey - so admirable.  thumbsup

"What about Bob Anderson. He's off - route east of Bigfork for hours now and seems to be running around a farmhouse or whatever" ---
He is off-route in an area close to a cafe that many riders visit.  His SPOT hasn't been on for a while, so there's no way to know where he is now as he may have slept at that location and just forgotten to turn his SPOT on this morning.

"Curtis White: He makes short-cuts and very long breaks" ---
Curtis has been following the paved road instead of the route for quite a while.  From the comfort of my desk, it looks like he decided to switch from racing the TD just riding his own route instead.  IIRC, until he calls in to say that he has scratched from the *race* he will not be formally listed as a scratch.  Clearly he's not attempting to mislead or cheat, since his SPOT has been on the whole time (in past years there have been controversies about cutting corners, but in those cases the SPOTs were either deliberately turned off or just not transmitting successfully during the suspect sections).

Looks like el Jefe is taking an opportunity to open up the gap a bit as Ethan and Kurt hit the Silver Saddle in Basin. Dave Bruno reported lots of standing water in the vicinity of where Jefe is presently cruising through. Pretty soon he'll be spun out on 10mi of I-15 frontage road into Butte.

Much to TD's relief with the Clancy / Comet detour, we learned this morn that Cataract Creek Rd (main route into Basin) has been washed out. This road is a really steep, rough fireroad descent along a Class-V steep creek. Scary. It's possible it won't be open for Nobos.

Same here, bought the guy a dinner.  He deserves something for the show he's giving us.

Guess Dave Bruno (ITT rider) is over Fleecer Ridge by now!  Dave seems to moving at a nice pace.

Looks like Mike Hall (4th place) is also moving along quite nicely.  With a bit of luck and push at the right time/location he may soon catch on to the EP/KR/JB train over the next day or so

We are seeing something entirely new from the modest Wookie, aka Jefe.  He has said on numerous occasions that he isn't fast.  His start looked like the standard Jefe start - somewhere behind the front of the leaders and makes up some ground overnight.  That was something I more or less expected.  Since then, though, he has been stopping almost as much as Kurt and Ethan.  But - BUT - since day 2 he has been moving as fast as Kurt and Ethan, something that surprises me, especially since he is on a SS.

I can't wait to see what other surprises the modest Wookie has to unleash.  He's been growing abilities for years...methinks he's timed it perfectly for his first TD run.

Wookie for president!  Go Jefe go!

Great race to follow and thanks to everyone behind allowing us to follow. I'm hooked and and contemplating a run for it next year.  One stat that would be nice to see is average moving mph in addition to overall mph.

Thanks again!

I saw the Wookie a few days before he left for Canada. If I had to describe him in one word that day, it would be determined.

Go get 'em Jefe!

Justin Simoni might be last in the SOBO group at the moment, but I wonder what will happen when he's off the snow route and back on the same course as the rest of the riders for a while.

haha while I'm sure Jefe's mountain lion and cub close encounter was a fright at first, I'm sure the adrenaline was a nice "turbo boost" for him for a few miles....

I am not to surprised to see Jefe do what he is doing.  The sharp, hard, repeated efforts required during a CTR or say a AZT are pretty much entirely absent on the TDR.  Instead it’s all about picking and then holding the best pace for your particular situation/location/condition.  I don’t mean you pick and hold just 1 pace all day but rather you modestly up or decrease your sustained effort to match how you feel in the morning vs in the cool evening or perhaps your current cal intake, need to reach a store before it closes etc etc.

So unlike single track trail racing, where the trail itself is always demanding hard sharp efforts from you, the TDR is demanding you set the appropriate pace that maximizes your entire day.  Anyway, I think Jefe’s known mental toughness is clearly translating into smart all day pace setting.  I do suspect the SS gearing will take a toll around day 11-14, but then that’s were the real mental test kicks in.  Ahh,it’s such a long race, so much fun to watch!! Keep up the good work Jefe

...and with Mike Hall lurking there in 4th.  Could this be an attempt to break Kurt and Ethan early?   He may not need much; the desire for an extra sleep in or an early night somewhere, a bit of rain, and he could have half a days break

Cheers

Hey Joe, whenver I click on one of your links I get the attached image... not sure if its something on my end, or yours. Looks like that is the address to the RSS feeds...

You can just go to the main mtbcast page and get them there as well. That looks like Chrome. For some reason it doesn't render RSS. you can just go to http://mtbcast.com/site2/category/td11/. It will show as html so you'll have to right-click to download the mp3's. Or you can just pull them from iTunes if you have it. Search for "mtbcast" and subscribe.
