Russ McBride returned to the course at the same point he left it, but in order to have gotten from that point to Santa Fe, he would have had to make forward progress on course by vehicle. Am I seeing this correctly? Please tell me it's not so.

For a mechanical breakdown, as long as he returns from where he stopped, he's good.

Heat stroke facts: Heat stroke is a form of hyperthermia in which the body temperature is elevated dramatically. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and can be fatal if not promptly and properly treated. Cooling the victim is a critical step in the treatment of heat stroke. The most important measures to prevent heat strokes are to avoid becoming dehydrated and to avoid vigorous physical activities in hot and humid weather.
The body normally generates heat as a result of metabolism, and is usually able to dissipate the heat by radiation of heat through the skin or by evaporation of sweat. However, in extreme heat, high humidity, or vigorous physical exertion under the sun, the body may not be able to dissipate the heat and the body temperature rises, sometimes up to 106 F (41.1 C) or higher. Another cause of heat stroke is dehydration. A dehydrated person may not be able to sweat fast enough to dissipate heat, which causes the body temperature to rise.
Common symptoms and signs of heat stroke include: •High body temperature, •The absence of sweating, with hot red or flushed dry skin, •Rapid pulse, •Difficulty breathing, •Strange behavior, •Hallucinations, •Confusion, •Agitation, •Disorientation, •Seizure, and/or coma.
Victims of heat stroke must receive immediate treatment to avoid permanent organ damage. First and foremost, cool the victim. Get the victim to a shady area, remove clothing, apply cool or tepid water to the skin (for example you may spray the victim with cool water from a garden hose), fan the victim to promote sweating and evaporation, and place ice packs under armpits and groin. If the person is able to drink liquids, have them drink cool water or other cool beverages that do not contain alcohol or caffeine. Monitor body temperature with a thermometer and continue cooling efforts until the body temperature drops to 101 to 102 F (38.3 to 38.8 C).
Always notify emergency services (911) immediately. Heat stroke is a true medical emergency that is often fatal if not properly and promptly treated

It seems that quite a few people believe that as long as you return the the point you left the course you are good, but that simply isn't the case. A rider may never make forward progress on course by motor vehicle, for mechanical issues or otherwise. Erik Lobeck was relegated last year for this exact infraction.

Karlos is finally on the NoBo route! Greyhound lost is bike on his trip out there last week. Fortunately, the bike finally made it, but the box with his front wheel did not. But with the help of several generous people in the mtb community across the country, he began his dream ride a short while ago as a ITT NoBo. It should be quite the adventure! Go Karlos!

New TD-addict/stalker here so excuse my noob question... How do I see the start and end stop times? I am following on trackleaders.com with the whole group and individual riders. On individual riders map layers, I see time splits option but it doesn't show start/stop times. The graphs (speed plot, speed vs time) not showing data. I do see current elevation, route dist / day, rout avg speed, etc... but no stop times. Do I need to be following with topofusion pro? I only have the freebie one :-( Thanks.
Mining for little diamonds of information There is probably a much better way (Scott, Dave, Matt?) to check a racers daily start/stop and ‘break duration’ times but this is how I do it. Select the individual history of rider you want to check on. For start & stop time find the last green tent icon, zoom all the way in and click on the closest incoming and outgoing diamond icons. You will see something like this: Point #123 received at: 09:43:12 PM (MDT) 06/13/11 (46 minutes ago) (3:11:43 since start). So the incoming time is when the racer stopped and started to set up camp and the 1st out going is when the racer has got it all together and has moved a few min down the road. Anyway this usually will give you the start & stop times within a 10-30 min period Note: If a rider stops less than 4 hours there is not a tent icon assigned. In this case just study the diamond icons and look for a cluster of them—you have to zoom in and scroll to find these clusters. Once found same thing, ie:look at the incoming and out going diamond ‘times’ During the day for break duration if you see a cluster do the same as above or just count the number of diamond icons and multiply by 10 (10 min between diamonds) NOTE: what I just described is only as accurate as the captured/listed diamond icons. Many times there are missing diamonds but hey, for armchair quarterbacking it’s good enough.

Bruno seems to be heading way off route, anyone know if he has some destination/resupply in mind? Or is he heading off into no man's land? Looks pretty sparse where he's heading...

I'm anxiously awaiting the moment Ethan and Kurt stop holding hands.......it's good they enjoy each others company...but I still want to see some gamesmanship in the 2nd and 3rd slots. Looks like the leaders are enjoying a dry ride to Lima. Given the clay content of that soil and its density once attached to a bicycle this is HUGE. Me to, although I was originally thinking that staying together 'was' a display of some gamesmanship. But after I read that Kurt’s knees might be bothering him—well who knows, is KR hanging on while chowing down on the anti-inflammatory pain pills just hoping to get better, bidding his time?? Still pretty early in the grand scheme of things GO KURT!! (say, you sort of wishing you were out there mixing it up with this field?)

just missed a turn is what the spot shows--but I think the river crossing was flooded and impassable. I seem to remember this crossing as 'almost' flooded in 2010 zoom in on his track and you will see where I mean

humm quick look at TopoFusion--not sure yet but if this crossing is flooded he may have to backtrack all the way to Lima and detour
edit-- satellite view shows a clear road the way DB is headed --but there is wilderness area-- where it might be closed?? any one with on the ground knowledge know?

Karlos Bernart called in from Lordsburg. He has his bike and gear together and will head out tomorrow! He sends thanks to all those who pulled together to help! Paul Attalla called in from what I believe is Horca (he said “Horack” but it looks like he was close to Horca). Richard Ridlehuber called in from Lincoln and recapped the last two days. You can get the audio here, via RSS, or on iTunes!

Got to give it up for Caroline. She's rockin' a 20 day finish projection? Anyone have the women's record handy.
Great site, great race. Been lurking the past few weeks but can't seem to contain my obsession any longer. Go JS. Love the spirit.
