Got to give it up for Caroline. She's rockin' a 20 day finish projection? Anyone have the women's record handy.
Great site, great race. Been lurking the past few weeks but can't seem to contain my obsession any longer. Go JS. Love the spirit.
I've been following Caroline as well and was wondering if others were following the ladies of the Tour. I'm pretty sure that the women's record was set by Jill Homer in '09 with a 24:07:24 finish time. Soong is on pace to shatter that time by a few days. |

Have there been any 'official' statements on this topic? I was hoping that the reroutes maintained the same overall mileage of past Tours, but someone posted that this year's course is roughly 100 miles shorter and numerous comments make it sound as though the reroutes are less challenging than the standard route. As of now, both the mens and womens records could be broken. It kind of seems wrong that they won't count. |

Mike, are you thinking GC or ITT for '13?
I think it will come down to weather and how many folks are lining up. I'd rather ride the route, especially through the Flathead, and take in the climbing and the scenery, than ride the alternates on the road. That late summer / fall date is looking interesting... Still out 2 years, so lots of time to day dream and plan. |

As of now, both the mens and womens records could be broken. It kind of seems wrong that they won't count. I disagree, if it's not the standard course with the standard allowable detours, any time shouldn't count for the record books. It would be like running 25 miles and expecting to break the marathon record. |

Looks like Ethan slept off the I-15 frontage road last night...apparently got a good night's sleep, I guess that is a sure sign that someone is beat if they can get 6 hours of sleep on the side of an Interstate!!  |

Hope he feels better soon. It's been great tracking him the past week! Will you keep us updated?  Definitely. He was pretty much telling me last night that he was going to call it quits, but i'm trying to convince him to take a day or two off, see how his neck feels, and maybe get back out there. So, we'll see. |

This race is still in its early days. It is much like the Tour De France was in the early 1900s. Looking at the long term (50 years plus) old trails will disappear, new trails will be made and other changes will take place. Thus records based on specific courses or distances will be meaningless. In 50 years people will look back and say this guy won 6 times, this guy won by the largest margin or this racer was the first woman to win the entire race. We will not look back and say racer X in 2016 finished the race in 15 days but that does not equal racer Y in 2015 who finished a harder course in 15.5 days. |

On Tuesday June 14 between Jefferson City & Basin, my brother Jeff found Matt Porembski on the side of the path with heat stroke. They got into Basin. Has anybody heard if Matt is ok?
I'm about to post a call from Jeffrey Tomassetti and recounts them finding Matt. It sounds like he's doing okay. Sorry I didn't get this posted sooner. I'll have the call up shortly. |

I've been tracking the ladies' race too. Caroline is rockin it, and it's interesting to see so many of the women riding so close together. Excited to see what transpires in the next couple weeks. Women in the GDR/TDR have a good track record of sticking it out, so I hope to see a high finishing rate among ladies this year. As to the discussion of what "records" will be broken or stand, I'm in agreement that this course changes every year. The course we raced in 2009 had some additions to the course of 2008 (Canadian Flathead ... it was hard!) And 2010 had a detour as well. This year would have had Gold Dust addition if it weren't for all of the reroutes, which have made the course substantially different. Several of the tough passes in Montana were entirely eliminated. It's actually difficult to compare year to year, and may remain that way. However, for those who are tracking records (and records are significant; they were the entire reason for launching this race back in 2004 and remain the main goal of many who ITT the course), I would argue that this year's reroutes are at least as significant as cutting out the Canadian section altogether. So the overall women's Divide record is Trish Stevenson's 2005 border-to-border ride with the Great Divide Race, at 21 days, 23 hours and 47 minutes; and the overall men's record is John Nobile at 15 days, 1 hour and 26 minutes. No matter how you weigh it — race organization rulings or popular opinion — those are ultimately the times to beat. |
