Took an early distance ride today and came back by Tetonia in time to find the SB ladies leader Caroline Soong. She was riding with Itt'er Rob Culliver. Both were making a b-line for food. CS was all business doing some brake work and repacking last nights sleeping gear before heading in for some breakfast. Rob was looking like he needed some coffee but wearing well.

There were 6-7 bikes outside the cafe in Tetonia. (That cafe is loving the TD. Everyone is ready to eat when they hit Tetonia and it's the only place besides a gas station) A bunch of riders camped in and around the Drummond area last night. Spoke with Derek Bently (who was enjoying himself) and saw Nathan Jones earlier headed for the bike shop in Driggs. They all have some nice winds to play with today.

A couple more pics added:

seems to have a lot of snow above, the Sobo leaders are at the highest point (9.800 ft, near Sand Mountain) and not very fast

JF-mtnbiker : Great pictures! It is really great for those of us stalking on the computer to see real faces and landscapes instead of blue dots.  I hope you post more. THANKS!

Kirsten - great to see you taking care of everyone again. You are amazing.

I was really stoked to see that the golden spike was laid at the Brush Mountain Lodge. No better place. The photos brought back some strong memories and emotions.

I know that Dave B will be joining you at your table in spirit... enjoying the stories, laughs, food, and beer that will be shared by all the racers you host this year.

Forest

Thanks Forest!!
I thought the 'golden spike' belonged here too...but given the pace of things, i still wasn't sure it would happen right up until Paul rolled in!!
Most fun!!
I will paint one of the horseshoe pit spikes gold and put TD2011 on it....do you think that will suffice for a monument for the moment...?
If i had more time (and another cook) i might have been able to actually get the boys to plant it here-on film-this morning...but you know, it is a race...(: and they were in it!

And yes, Dave's spirit is strong around here right about now...i could almost see him sitting at the table this morning...smiling and laughing along...
...and he is definitely riding along with these guys!

so, it's really nice to hear from you...
i wrote you an email to further catch up....(:
affection,
k

What's Russ McBride up to?  It looks like he might have missed the left-hand turn onto Co. Road 33 (just before Williams Fork Reservoir).  He may have missed that left and made the left on to Hwy 40 thinking he was staying on course.  If so, he's pedalled a LONG way out of the way.

I hope he figures this out soon ...   icon_scratch

I'm following my husband Ross Delaplane, a Northbounder.  Revelate and the USPS messed up his custom bag order and he is riding with the infamous seat rack and likely carrying 7-10 lbs of rack system.  The seat rack broke just before the high climb south of Del Norte, CO.  He wrapped spare spokes around it to secure until Salida, but is now carrying a lot of weight on his back until he can replace the rack.  The same night his rack broke he was 'victimized' by some varmints.  While he was sleeping they ate up his aerobar padding!  The excitement today is that he needs to get into Salida by noon for the post office - which is holding his revelate bags.

Before leaving town everyone was asking if this was a charity ride; so he put it out to our friends and family to donate to the charity they are most passionate about.  So now he is not only riding for himself, but also for the American Cancer Society, MS, a Maryland Food Bank, a Colorado Youth at Risk organization, a biking youth group that is currently riding the path of the underground railroad, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado and others.

Did Ross get to the Post Office in time?  His Spot says he did but?  I like the informal charity support, nice way to let a friend casually get involved

His leg may have given out, bearing in mind how bad he was last night.

My sister, Sheila Reiter is towards the end of the SB pack, but between her and her racing partner - Sheila Torres-Blank, they are producing a fairly consistent pace.  Both are MTB race veterans from various events in and around the Texas Hill Country.  SR's family in Massachusetts and Texas is glued to the dots. I've got to find a way to explain my drop in productivity at work. I cant tear my eyes off of their dots.

A few days ago, I saw they had arrived at Holland Lake, and even though the morning hour was getting late, saw their dots were not moving.  I was a little concerned.   So I Googled "Lodging" and "Holland Lake MT" and found the phone number of the lodge they were likely staying at.  I called the lodge, and asked the proprietor to connect me to SR's room.  He replied that she was standing next to him having breakfast and promptly handed her the phone.  After she was done cracking up, she explained they arrived at Holland Lake after a particularly long and brutal nightime ride, and so were a little slow getting mounted.  Technology is cool.

My hat is off to the Sheilas, and all the TD riders for undertaking this ride.

Just some info on My husband, Daniel Simas....Dan, who is riding in this race without a spot tracker, is an amazing athlete and has raced most of his life. Triathlon team in college, completed an Iron Man and has raced 3 marathons in Antarctica. (Antarctica is where we both do contract work.) I am so happy that he was able to enter this race this year. He has been talking about it for about 3 years and it is so exciting to follow him and the other riders. We just completed a bike tour across New Zealand and Asia and I know I hold him back  icon_biggrin It is great that he is free to go as fast as he wants. Currently he is having some stomach issues, which has slowed him down, but he is hoping he will be good to go again tomorrow. GO DAN! GO!

Looks like Dave Bruno is at the Orange Peel bike shop right now--but unless they stay open late the 3 amigos might have to wait till the next shop for any needed service?

[oh and hey!!, thanks to all for all the recent posts about all the racers out there!!  I have been clicking on some names now with a bit of insight, thanks,  keep the info coming] thumbsup thumbsup

I think it is great that they are both riding together and both named Sheila.

keep up the great work ladies.

I just got the same message. I think it's something technical on the other end. I'd imagine that the sys admin got an email about it & is working on the problem now.

Likewise from me!  it's nice to know there are some fellow humans also doing the race Smiley

As a blue dot junkie over the years, My thoughts also go out to those  remembering David B. I wish everyone safe passage in what's sound like trying times out there.

Cheers
