Joe, Matt, Scott, whomever! I am out of the race. I am in Pinedale and have decided that I am not fast enough to do this in my allotted 3 weeks vacation time. The apparent lack of sunshine in Wyoming and the whole vegan thing is leaving me feeling a little weak in comparison to my fellow racing bud Dylan Taylor. I have transferred all of my riding will to Dylan so watch out, wolverine don't give a f@ck. I'm pretty sure he will be charging past the pack in the next few days into a solid placing in the teens. To all the other racers out there, be safe. And to all the armchair folk, thanks for watching!
Sorry to hear it, Nathan, but understandable. Sorry to hear about Pete Faeth too, however maybe now I can get George Michael's "Faith" out of my head now after processing his calls. I know, right!? |

everyone is in pretty good spirits...if a little daunted by the thoughts of more trudging through snow...and a little wet on account of the cool rain we have here today...happy to be in colorado now, though....and pushing on!
hope i'll see dave g and mike h sometime today...

My ride report for Banff through Butte (where I pulled out).
So sorry your race ended early but thank you for this video - it has given me (partner of Kevin Cunniffe) a real feel for what he's going through over there. I'm loving all the updates we're getting from this site. Thanks to all. Marion |

Ross did get to the post office on time! He thinks he was lucky to even find a hotel room with the festival going on - but gumbled that he'd overpaid. He rested up, switched out bags and is on the move again. It's sad to see so many of his fellow Northbounders whom I saw at the start are out! Down to half of those that started North! |

 It appears that Justin Voss rode 200 miles to get to Rawlins on Saturday. Yep, that's a good, classic TD move, to make "a pull" from just past Boulder, WY all the way to Rawlins in one 170mile to 200mile shot. After a week+ of riding, it just seems to work out that way, when the cards line up for such a day. Looks like he's payin' the price, so to speak, with a later start (10am - ish) out of Rawlins and a slower day today, which also happens following a long day across the Great Basin. Nonetheless, I like the riding and the spirit of this rider, and am cheering for him to catch up to those in front of him. |

In regards to David Horton here is a link to a piece on the Barkley that he ran. http://www.mattmahoney.net/barkley/ If you are not familiar with the Barkley it is an ultra that is run near Oak Ridge TN around Frozen Head Park. The race commemorates James Earl Ray's escape from Brushy Mt. State Pen. which abuts Frozen Head. When I lived in Oak Ridge I used to trail run, hike and generally suffer there. The terrain is steep and unforgiving. Add in the heat and humidity, throw in the copperheads and bugs and you have a hellish experience. I have never been able to comprehend what it takes to actually finish that race. |

Hi all from Roland's Sturm's family (Kathy, Obin and Anya) in Santa Monica. Roland is riding Northbound, he's going up the Boreas Pass this afternoon. Looks like he'll be crossing paths with the Southbound leaders this afternoon. So far, Roland's had better luck than most of the NB riders -- no bike problems, just some minor knee issues that seem to be settling down. We are really enjoying the blue dots and the blog -- thanks to everyone who is posting.

To soon to be 100% sure but it looks like KR (and I assume EP—as his Spot is not updating right now) is on the move again. By on the move I mean he seems to be distancing JB. I truly suspect that JB is now feeling the effort and sticking with a geared KR on a SS could be the wrong approach. How late JB rides tonight and how early he starts tomorrow may be telling as to his frame of mind.
The SB riders will now leave the bike path to Breck and have an easy but long climb to Boreas pass, a not so fun but fast descent on loose golf ball size gravel, (maybe a quick stop in Como?) and out into South Park (yes there is really a South Park)
Riding sections of South Park in the dark are a real pain, the gravel can vary from moon dust to wash board torture. The gravel will fade out your lights so it’s sort of like riding blind. Oh and no real good place to camp till Hartsel plus enough local traffic to be a bit dicey.
Once past Hartsel the route become a bit better, imo, form a racers perspective

Just randomly looking at some Spot’s and notice that NB Steve Moore from Wimberly, TX has got the ol TDR timing game going his way today. He seems to have started his day quite early around 4:00am but is about to roll into Salida when all the resupply points are still open (except maybe the bike shop??).
Anyway, Steve will have his choice of food and if he wants lodging. And if he feels good he could eat a nice full meal, resupply and then start the long climb out of Salida.
If the weather is good, riding that long climb in the cool dark with a relaxed leisurely “taper off the day” pace would be my choice. Then when the sleep’ies set in good and hard-- lots of nice camping (dry though) to be had in the area, and that warm fuzzy feeling knowing a big climb is behind you.
