Hope to one day meet you Russ. Sorry to hear about your leg, I know Paul said you'd catch up but when you didn't we knew it was serious. He said you were an amazing rider too. Thanks also for the posts and memories to pass  along to him. If you are ever in Fernie...Smiley

Well, I got up really early after all with best intentions to hit the road and make it close to Steamboat. But I was greeted outside by snowfall and a pretty winter wonderland scenery. Cars and trees covered in snow and it is getting thicker. So I just took a picture (maybe Kathy can post it later) and went back inside.

Here's the pic.  Lovely summer morning in Silverthorne.

Thank you for the photos.  It is good to "see" the riders.   Thanks also for taking care of them so well!

Interesting ...a couple of from San Antonio are talking about putting together a ride from hear to Terlinqua ...what was his destination?

We met up with him south of Marathon, which is probably the way you'd go to Terlingua (Viva Terlingua!  :-).  For the most part, I am pretty sure it was ACA's southern tier route (which runs in front of our house), with some modifications.  I'd have to ask him to get the full details on the route.  He went past Lost Maples, through Leakey, Del Rio, Sanderson, etc.

Thanks to Scott for making a usable topofusion demo program available (I just installed it on the hotel computer).

Awesome, you are welcome.  Glad to hear it being used in the thick of battle.  Sorry I missed you in Salida!

Tip for SPOT users...
When in Tracking mode, the device sends your location every 10 minutes.  With each transmission, the current location PLUS two prior locations are sent.  Therefore, each location gets transmitted three times.  If a transmission fails (no satellite in view, etc) there's still a chance for that location to get picked up on the next round.  So, if you want maximize the chances that your family (and BD Junkies) will know where you are, then leave the thing on for 20-30 minutes when you stop rather than immediately turning it off.

Dejay Birtch called in from Atlantic City with more brilliant commentary. Jon Pettit called in from Ashton. Ross Delaplane called in from Como. And Paul Attalla called in from Boulder. He was happy to change out his bags though he had some varments eat his aerobar pads.

Ethan just had breakfast, he spent the night in the old PO.

We went out looking for him at daybreak, cold and snowing, ice in the dog bowl.

Dave left about an hour ago.

"He went past Lost Maples, through Leakey, Del Rio, Sanderson, etc."

I deer hunt in Sanderson and there are a couple of things to think about.  First Sanderson is the rattle snake capital of the world.  These aren't the sissy little 40" snakes like most of the Southwest these are Texas sized up to 8'.  I hunt in December there so they aren't an issue because the temps can get down to the teens.  Add in some wind chill and were talking cold.

This route runs along the Border.  Remember Sanderson was where "No Country for Old Men" was set.  It isn't like there are shoot outs everywhere but you have to be mindful camping along the border.  The best thing to do is go to a McDonalds (if you are in a town big enough to have one) around 7:00 am and there are always several BP guys getting ready for their shift hanging out.  BP guys are some of the most helpful guys you will ever run into.  Tell them what you are up to and they will give you tips on staying safe.  They will also have the other BP guys keep an eye out for you.

Sanderson is prime Mt Lion habitat.  Mt Lion sightings are very rare however on the ranch I hunt on in both of the last two years lions were shot.  Last year one was shot after it was stalking a hunter for over an hour.  The hunter went after the wounded lion in some heavy brush until he came to his senses realizing he was no Jim Corbett.  I used to run into government hunters often before sun up in the area, that tells me there are lots of kitties around.

That said it is a wonderful place and the people are great.  It used to be a big sheep raising area back in the 1920s before it dried out.  The people who stayed are either descendants of the old ranchers or retirees.  You can't go into a restaurant without getting into a conversation with everyone in the place.  It has been really dry there and the local economies are really taking a hit so every dollar spent in locally owned businesses is greatly appreciated.

I hope everyone takes note of the special care some of the local businesses give the riders.  We rode through Como last year and splurged on a room and prime rib dinner.  One of the best stops of the entire Great Divide.  The dog is particularly interested in hearing your stories.

A buddy used to hunt around Sanderson as well.
The rancher told him there were Pinyon Pines up in the mountains there until the 50's drought, which finished them off.
Present drought looks worse than the 50's.

Good news is that it's Solstice tomorrow around noon - so HOW could there be fresh snow in the Rockies?

So I'm not going anywhere today and happy to relinquish my current 4th place among NOBOs as a trade off for not riding off into a snow storm. I also talked to Denis Chazelle, he is a few miles behind and he will be heading here later, maybe update his GPS with sobo detours on the hotel computer if he doesn't have them loaded already (now that I have Scott's great demo installed). Ross Delaplane didn't make it over Boreas yesterday, so he is checking out the conditions and may also join us today in Silverthorne. But Ross has a distinguished career as a top level mountain bike racer (and riding with him, I know he has a lot more speed than me), so he can catch up with us quickly. [update: Ross is also staying put in Como for the day]

Did you notice that TD is a truly international race? The NOBO group is lead by
1. Paul from Canada, followed by
2. Franck from France (residing in Canda)
3. Craig Dolwin from the UK
4. Roland Sturm from Germany (residing in Santa Monica)
5. Denis Chazelle from France
6. Ross Delaplane from Colorado
don't know the rest of the group and who of the original 14 is still riding
