Paul arrived in Banff sometime around 10 - 10:30. Good crowd to welcome him home - family, friends, Banff riders and one ITTer who plans to start next week. Paul's happy, looks great - amazing as he had not slept since leaving Whitefish! He got snowed on overnight and stopped for a while to warm up in a trail hut. Frozen mud, snow, rain all between Elkford & Banff. We are waiting for him to come down for breakfast - he asked for a "ten egg omlette". Pictures later today.

Race notes from Banff this morning.
Paul arrived this morning at 10:38am to the fan fare of his wife, daughters, parents and a handful of Blue dot watching fans. He encountered snow, freezing temperatures and still a host of snow(hike a bike) and mud along Elk Pass and North of Elkford that slowed his progress since Fernie. Despite being thrilled to be the first NoBo he had to bite his lip on the disappointment of the final push to be so close to both Jefe and Kurt.
He arrived looking fresh as if he was out for a ride along the block.
He shared many great stories of trail magic and experiences as he hugged his daughters and wife.
Giant congrats and will continue to post as the NoBo's arrive

Jon Pettit called in from Dillon sorting out his gear. And Greg McKennis called in from Jackson. You can get the audio here, via RSS, or on iTunes!

Kurt's dad again...
Just got a call from Caroline Soong. She and several other riders (Lance & Lucas, at least) were climbing to Marshall Pass south of Salida and were turned back due to a route closure from an apparent fresh fire somewhere ahead near the pass. She said they are considering detouring via Monarch Pass using US 50. But they are worried about being disqualified if they use the detour. They don't know anything about the size of the fire, or if the route might be reopened soon. They're trying to check with the local authorities (they have returned to Poncha Springs) for more information on the fire and the closure.
What is the "proper" course of action to take when riders encounter an unexpected route closure like this? Do they risk being relegated if they go off route without prior approval? And who should they be contacting for advice and approval?
---Ron
Just wondering how the fire at Marshall Pass is by now? Is the road open? Norb DeKerchove, JP Evans, Tom Sap and Lee K. are approaching that area now. Just hoping they can get through without a reroute. A quick update re: Norb - after struggling with a very sore Achilles, he seems to have gotten it under control with lots of ice/snow/cold water when he has down time. He was also very grateful for all of the TLC he received at Brush Mtn.! Thanks to all and all of the great support for the riders all along the way!

A huge CONGRATULATIONS to Paul and the Attalla family. Fernie, Canada is VERY proud! The report of snow and freezing temps @ Elk Pass was not surprising... We (in Fernie) have had a lengthy delay of summer's arrival - in fact, it feels like winter's barely been finished and we continue to await a proper spring, let alone summer! In fact we had frost in town last night! Paul went flying through Fernie to massive cheers from local supporters yesterday afternoon. To have to endure a snow hike-a-bike in the final push to the finish!!! Darn! You're #1 to us in Fernie ,Paul! Congrats to Kurt, Jefe and all other TD riders!

No riders have been listed as Scratched in the last 24 hours. Down to the hard core now.

Kurt Refsnider called in from his finish from Silver City with some final thoughts and advice. And ITT Fixie Dave Nice called in from Lordberg still waiting. He may call it if his bike and gear doesn’t show up in the next 24hrs. You can get the audio here, via RSS, or on iTunes!

Thank you to the ComoDepot and BrushMountain for the pics and taking such good care of the riders. It is nice to see my friend Tori stopped for a beer, at 11:30 in the morning mind you. Thanks also to all of the great TD supporters, the Outdoorsman, Orange peel, Absolute bikes, sorry I know I am missing some. As a fan and future racer, it's amazing, the spirit of all those out there that make this ride so special.

Oops, my tracking was off...I looked to me like it was Caroline who was in the vicinity of Como. Didn't mean to disrespect Tori's beauty.

Congratulations to Kurt, Jefe and Paul on amazing and inspiring rides. I just got back from 3 days of training for the CTR and I put together a loop that started on the NOBO TD route Friday night where I had the pleasure of running into Jeff Tomessetti and another rider from Belgium (who I can't recall his name). It was super cool to run across both of them out there and hear some of their stories.

Congrats to the finishers, what a huge accomplishment!! I'm going to throw a question out about my favorite racer, JV. I notice that his spot hasn't moved in about four and a half hours. I would figure his batteries just wore out, I'm concerned because when I checked the views, it actually appears that he is off of the road. I know as an Alaskan, he has been struggling with the heat a bit too, so perhaps he is just waiting out the worst of it. Anyone have any ideas?

JVs most recent data point from 12:01:16 PM (MDT) 06/26/11 shows that he's right on track at 10,000 feet. He was nearly done with the climb from Abiquiu (6000') to the top of Polvedera Mesa (10400'). Then he's got 35 miles of bumpy up and down, followed by a 15 mile descent to Cuba at ~7000'. There is shade up on that mesa, it's not the wide open heat of the lower elevation NM sections. Regarding the SPOT dots, they are consistent with what I've seen when using alkaline batteries that are partially drained. Chances are good that he's using Alkaline batteries, as it's pretty hard to find Lithium replacements in the small shops along the GDMBR. Read my earlier post about what to expect from batteries, if you missed it. http://www.bikepacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,2179.msg21568.html#msg21568Also, Gary (aka Rocky Rode) asked about whether Alkaline Batteries cause damage and/or invalidate warrantee. I've checked into the SPOT manual, and here's the answer: The OLD Spot Manual says: > "Section 5: Care and Support > Battery Life and Usage > • Use only AA lithium batteries in your SPOT messenger. Alkaline or > other battery > technologies are not compatible and may damage or cause malfunction of > the device." The NEW Spot2 Manual says: "If in an emergency situation where you only have alkaline or different non-rechargeable AAA lithium batteries available, SPOT may be able to intermittently transmit messages but performance will be degraded." JVs Spot Dots have been sporadic for ~28 hours now - consistent with partially drained Alkalines. If you hear from him when he reaches Cuba, tell him to put in a new set of batteries. Amy

Thank you! I will let him know. Now I can quit worrying for a few hours :-)

Dejay bailing? He is out to 285
Maybe he went for some bonus miles. I sure hope he didn't bail this close. His SPOT hasn't moved in hours. Congrats to the finishers. Woody
