- While she was fixing her tire, a Forest Service truck drove by, and the woman driving alerted Caroline that the section of Santa Fe NF above Cuba will be closed to public access as of Friday morning! So from the sounds of it, any riders coming through Abiquiu starting late Thursday are going to have to take a detour around to Cuba!

There is going to need to be a massive reroute thru New Mexico.

In addition to the expanded level III restrictions (closures) in the Santa Fe NF, the Carson NF is expected to go to level III restrictions throughout the forest by this Friday, July 1.  If so, that will essentially close the route from the CO/NM border to Cuba!

A quick Cordillera note...

If you already have a Cordillera Volume 2 in your possession hold on to it. It's going to be a collector's item.

One of the riders mentioned in Jon Billman's excellent piece didn't like the way he was portrayed. He's since contacted the printer and forced them to stop shipments.  BangHead That explains why some of you have had trouble placing orders today. 

I rebuilt the book without the alleged mis-diagnosis that caused the drama and set everything up again so sales can resume now but without Jon's contribution.

The Cordillera is not intended to be controversial nor does it want to hurt feelings in any way so I'm going to resist calling this guy out for jeopardizing the fundraising effort and just move on.

It really is a great book, this is just an unfortunate distraction.

Wow. Upon reading of this, I immediately went to my nightstand and grabbed Volume 2 to see if I could find anything seemingly out of the ordinary. I read about half of Billman's story and then had to go outside and do something. While standing in my driveway, I hear the distinct sound of something being ruined by my eldest dog. Did I leave those chips out? No. I do recall putting them away. Maybe 37 minutes later I walk in to find this:



Apparently she was not as big a fan of the book as everyone else. Sorry Eric. No reflection on you. Good thing I had read it already but looks like I'll be ordering another copy. I'll hang on to this "collectors edition" though.

Wow, no kidding.  Have you see the headline on Drudge?  The Jemez (pronounced "hay-mess" or "hay- miss") is about to be off limits.

Los Alamos is in real danger (the labs and the city, both).  There is a road that goes from Abiquiu to Cuba around the north side of the Jemez, but it won't be much fun for the riders.  It's a pretty lame route, but it beats riding in fire.  LOL

Well...That's that from Brush Mountain!  
I was watching Justin coming in--ready and waiting with a big tray of fruit--but he's blown by!  Perhaps driven to get to steamboat...or just so happy to be back in Colorado that he's got the wind in his sails...

Either way, I want to extend a GIANT thank you to all the racers who stopped and ate or stayed and shared their stories from the road...it's been a fantastic year!

I also want to thank Matthew, Scott, Joe, and the rest of the folks who make watching this race so exciting and accessible for those of us on the 'sidelines' ...

Congratulations to Kurt, and Jefe for the phenomenal ride! 
And of course, the epic efforts of Paul in the NOBO seat....those nobos kept me on my toes all the way through...and true to form, again here!  Excellent work, gentlemen!!
Most exciting all the way through!! (:

And to the rest of the folks still on the route--we're still watching you...!  Keep it up!  (add a 'woot woot' here for Mike Hall--for bouncing back from his potential scratch frame of mind while he was here!!  Look at him go!)

In the control panel on the right side, check "Fire".  It was clear, based on this map, that earlier today the folks on Polvedera Mesa were in thick smoke.

Congratulations to all the finishers and participants and especially Kurt and Jefe for keeping us all on the edge of our TD seats.

I have a question for any of the TD vets:

How did you approach your training during the last 30 days leading up to the TD?  Did you taper your training or just keep hammering out the miles?

I'm leaving Banff on Tuesday, August 9th...not an official TD racer, but I am hoping for about a 90 mile a day pace.  I have 30 days available to ride the whole trail.  Again, not racing, but definitely a race-like pace for me.

Both DeeJay Birtch and Ben Onel are in Pie Town... Deejay taking another interesting route today... and arriving a few hours after Ben Onel after sleeping in late in Grants and getting a late start.  Looking at the stats... and the estimates... it's going to be darn close for both of them until the finish. Next leg is the tough one, all Gila, 175 miles, no food stops, not enough water stops... and the previous leaders went hungry in this zone. Any arm chair strategists on how to handle the next few days, when to ride, when to sleep, etc?

Ben is from Minnesota, I wonder how he'll do in the heat, Deejay is from next door, Tucson, AZ, so you know he's equipped to deal with it.  Then there's strategy... do you ride at night all night, when its cool, and limited visibility with lights? Or do you brave the heat, the loss of perspiration, staying hydrated, and carrying on board all that extra water weight?  Things that make you go Hmmmm....

I don't race, but this has been a most useful resource for following this Great Divide race this year, both here, and with Spot coverage.

Another curious question.... how many calories will these guys burn going 175 miles between fillups at a store /market?  Pretty sure Aidan is at the border now... and finished in 6th place.

Calories - - -  It depends on a bunch of variables (weight, speed, terrain, etc.) but in general 500-800/hr is a good estimate.  If you average 10mph for 175miles that's ...well, that's a lot of calories...8750-14000 calories.

I try to take in 6000 calories/day during efforts like these - it's about the maximum that my body can process, but it doesn't quite match what I actually burn, and I can't take in that much in really hot conditions. I'd estimate that is somewhere around 8000 calories/day, but that's assuming only a few hours of sleep per night. For 2-2.5 days in the Gila, the weight and volume of the food that has to be carried is impressively high. Hopefully all the riders have the capacity for both this and 5-7 liters of water!

Time to go to bed, Kevin, Will and Reinhold have been fed, beered and washing in the machine. Reinhold turned down a Paulaner despite being from only 10 miles from the brewery and went for a Steamworks Steamengine Lager, actually 2.

And they are happy with a 7.00 Breakfast. Result!
