KimR is taking the rough beautiful dirt GDMBR route from Cuba to Grants, not the permitted paved alternate that most people take.

Ouch, heavy hailstorm just hit Butte, back to the Outdoorsman. Looks like Butte is covered in snow now even though it's hot.

Ouch.
HWY 17 just North of the CO/NM border to US 64 to HWY 112 through the Santa Fe NF to HWY 96 into Cuba then?
88 miles versus 181 on the proper route :/

The problem is getting on the freeway in Butte. Paul apparently wasn't allowed onto the ramp, in which case it's a detour and finding the hole in the fence.

Great race to the finish going on right now between Marco, Reto and Saemi. Think they'll finish as one or make a sprint to AW?

!!!! I have a fire update from Tom Sap who is in Abiquiu right now with Rob Colliver. The Forest Service told them that FR 144 [edit] between Abiquiu and Cuba is literally on fire in places and that they will need to go to Cuba via Hwy 84, then left on 96 to Cuba--no going in the forest. Unfortunately, Bob Anderson and Jeff Tomasetti are on that route right now. Rob also phoned this in, but I gathered Joe might not be back yet to post. Tom said the sky turned black in Abiquiu and there was ash all over the clothes he's hung out to dry. The locals said that they've never had ash in the valley before.

My guess is he's confused that he could take the pavement, the last I saw him he was pushing back up the fleecer descent in the dark with only a crappy headlamp. Granted he climbs like a mountain goat so maybe it was no big deal for him.

OK, I see. I thought I remembered a note about this for NoBo riders on the map. Do they really suggest the hole in the fence? Maybe you just have to get on at the next on-ramp? Riding in town on the freeway is likely prohibited, but when it's the only route (as it is heading out of Butte) it is legal. Maybe someone from ACA can chime in, we have a cartographer here, right? Or someone that has the maps handy? Mine are in AZ...

Rob Colliver called in from Abiquiu. Apparently FS144 is closed over to Cuba and they are being re-routed to Highway 96! You can get the audio here, via RSS, or on iTunes!

Here is the .gov map that shows current fire perimeters. As far as I can tell, it's the same data feed that Wunderground uses, as the two images appear to be in sync. http://www.geomac.gov/viewer/viewer.shtmlBA is already NW of the place where the active fire comes closest to the route, and riding west away from the fire. Firefighters either already are, or will likely start soon, setting backfires NW of the current fire... http://www.inciweb.org/incident/2385/

I agree completely with Jefe's comments. It was a bit unnerving to have so many fans out there, often driving past and then quickly swerving off the road and jumping out of their cars/trucks. Alarm bells always went off - is that a superfan or someone that's going to try to steal my bike? That being said, usually it was fun to have someone to chat with for a few minutes. It's also more than a little frustrating to have had a couple dozen or more fans I've never before met come out to cheer and chat, but according to the rules, I can't grab a DQ Blizzard with Caroline when she rolls through Silver City in a few days, although I know some other racers have been a bit lax with respect to that particular rule.
Check with Matthew, but as a TD11 racer you should be able to consort with any other TD11 racers. Hopefully Paull Attalla doesn't get relegated since the town of Fernie came out to cheer him.

I was being sarcastic, but it's nice to know the situation is covered in the rules.

It's probably just a temporary construction issue, I got on it fine. If there is a problem, the bikeshop knows and they also described the detour to me if needed

Thanks, Scott, for getting Roland's blue dot back on the leaderboard. Friends and family in California, Colorado and Germany all very happy to see that dot moving north again!

Looks like Dejay Birtch is spending some time in the afternoon, about an hours worth or more, resting, doing something besides pedalling and moving forward. I do hope he is Ok out there on that stretch from Pie Town to Silver City. That's 2 days in a row he's started late in pedalling, and the first I've seen him resting mid day.... he's a long ways from anywhere right now with supplies or water.
This is a good example why Spot Tracker is so useful.
