Steven Huddle spent more time talking about Sarah Palin than bear. Perhaps politics should be edited out? I found his comment on that rather offensive and polarizing, no need for it in a ride report.
Offensive speech is protected under the Constitution, mostly because almost any comment can be offensive to someone. I found his attempt at Sarah Palin humor to be kind of unoriginal and not all that hilarious, but then again he's been riding pretty hard.

In the words of Rodney King, after starting a riot in Los Angeles with his inappropriate actions. "Can't we all get along?"

I really hope that you're kidding. Alas, I suspect that you're not. In the USA (which generally includes AZ, even trailer trash), we have a long and principled tradition of free speech. As a private entity, MTBCast can technically choose to re-post only what they want to--but Joe has obviously decided to honor America's culture of uncensored speech. The moment that people like you decide on behalf of this country whether it's OK to make a Palin or Obama joke, is the moment that we might as well flush our democracy down the drain.

What a joke. The instant some republican makes a comment about Nazi Pelosi or the Hildabeast (deciding to honor America's culture of uncensored speech), they'd immediately be called misogynists and accused of hate speech - then probably banned with a reminder that this is a cycling forum devoted to the TD. How many would race to defend the comments and cite our principled tradition of free speech then?

Ahem. Anyone noticed that Justin is no longer the caboose? Or are we too busy debating politics and free speech? Justin, you rock! I'm still enjoying following the Sheilas too, and Jackie Bonn who was the last to head through Carson Forest in the smoke. And Caroline, big congrats on a great ride!

Ahem. Anyone noticed that Justin is no longer the caboose? I wonder if he handed off the jersey? Not sure I would want it after 3+ weeks!

I am TOTALLY with you on some extra hard cheering for Jackie Bonn. While she and Jon Petit were caught up in the worst of the fire, ashes and smoke, they were surpassed by several riders headed down from Colorado on the shorter path. I know that wasn't a choice (so I am not knocking the other riders) - but Jackie doesn't seem to have become discouraged at all - she just keeps pressing on! The Gila may be easy riding for her after having to breath in all those ashes!!!

Not a fan of having someone editing political content of the calls. But I'm also not a fan of people feeling the need to make political comments about every single damn thing. I listen to the MTB cast(s) & check out the bikepacking forums to find out about the Tour Divide, not the political leanings of any particular rider. I do appreciate the heads up on the Sarah Palin rant, I just deleted Stephen Huddle's call in from my playlist (haven't listened to any calls yet over the weekend) & will be doing the same if I get a heads up about any other political rants (either side of the aisle). No sense letting that get in the way of my daily tour divide fix.
Now, Go Justin!

His calls are often funny and while this one was picking on a political figure, he doesn't typically do so. As some of you who friend me on FB know, I lean more conservative in my politics. That said, I don't think what Stephen said was over the top. It was a joke but I don't think it was in bad taste. If something lewd or inappropriate were said it would be more towards how a broad audience would react. I think I've bleeped a word maybe once in all the years of doing the podcast. In the end, we're here to focus on what brings us together.

Tori seems to have slowed to walking pace. Hope she has enough food and water for a long walk.

I'll bet Stephen's post gets more listens than any of the others. "Hildabeast", good one. By the way, W is a mountain biker so we must be a big tent sport. I have always found cycling is the one place we can all get along, except for those blankedy blank roadies with the furrin writing on their jerseys. When someone says something that rubs you the wrong way it is best to remember that the rough and tumble in the market place of ideas is the price we pay for or tradition of free speech. There are plenty of things to make a big deal over so why waste energy on the little stuff.

It's been a bit trickier than I expected to maintain the (entirely unofficial) 'finishers' list in order on the tracker, especially with some folks losing tracking and other issues, but I think I've got it. Does anyone have a finish time for Lance G so we can get him showing up properly?
Also, just wanted to say congrats to Caroline Soong on the women's win and fast time!

Hmmm... Tour de France or Tour de Vide today? Decisions, decisions.... and to Scott Morris, thanks for the email! Good stuff you got going on here, know that it's greatly appreciated by us Blue Dot burners.
On another note, are all those Spot Trackers really dying on course, from vibrations, or are the batteries just going dead and the riders aren't noticing that they need a new set of batteries, or are too cheap to buy a new set? Curious minds want to know, before I perhaps lay out the clams for something that might be potentially prone to fail? Is it a problem with riding with these things over really rough stuff with rigid forks or does front suspension help preserve the units from brutal vibration? Or do you wear it on your arm, or what is the best method of mounting?
