Impressive indeed!!  thumbsup thumbsup thumbsup  If she can keep it up and if the main route opens up in the NM fire area she could take the Women's record away from Jill and then Jill would have to return next year to defend.  Wink
Hmmmm??? Jill Homer, Cricket Butler, and the newly-crowned Grand Depart defending champion, Caroline Soong--Sounds like an excellent race.   icon_biggrin

An Important Announcement

For every Cordillera Volume 2 sold from now until the day that Justin Simoni reaches Antelope Wells (or quits) the donor will make an equal donation to Linnaea Blumenthal's college fund. He's matching the full $15 purchase price for each book sold!

This is incredible! Now, thanks to this generous match over $21 from each and every Cordillera Volume 2 sold will go directly into Linnaea Blumenthal's college 529 savings plan.

There is no maximum donation. The donor is prepared to lay out some serious cash to help Linnaea but he's challenging all of us pull a little harder too. So please everyone, even if you have purchased a copy of the Cordillera please buy another copy or two. They make great gifts and have been getting terrific reviews so I know your friends and family will want their own copy.

If you don't know about the Cordillera Volume 2 check out this thread: http://www.bikepacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,2096.0.html

Purchase your copy here: https://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/the-cordillera/15659154

Thanks everyone and please help spread the word via Facebook, blogs, club emails, etc.

Eric -editor

I'm really exceptionally touched that I can inspire! Remember, it's all you gals/guys that make the community what it is. I just push the pedals. This is amazing news. Thanks for continuing to inspire me to keep pushing those pedals.

Great job Justin! Looks like you made into NM, hope you're on a reroute and not off course...
In honor of crossing into a new state (and Dave Blumenthal) I picked up a copy of the Cordillera and donated to your cause as well!
Very inspiring ride, way to set the bar for future racers!

Eric - Any update on what has been raised so far?  Would be interesting to see how much what has been raised now would be in future dollars 10+ years from now when it's used.

Hi Everyone!!
Gosh I've had so much fun watching this years race!  My "collectors" edition of The Cordillera Vol 2 just arrived a few days ago and I can't wait to get stuck into it.  Eric, thank you so much for putting this together, and for making the funds available to Linnaea.  And of course a huge thanks to the anonymous donor who is matching the sales proceeds until the day that Justin hits AW!  With that in mind I just went back and ordered another four copies, which I'll distribute to libraries or schools in the Phoenix, AZ area.  So go, Justin go!!!  In fact I guess the slower you get to AW now, well then the more it may benefit Linnaea huh??   Stop and smell the roses!!! (or forest fires! as the case may be.)

I seem to remember a few pages back Eric offering a coupon code and saying (please correct me if I'm wrong here.....) that it doesn't affect his proceeds.  So I did a little googling, and although the previous one has expired, I just ordered using "JulyBooks11" as a coupon code, and saved 20% on my order!

So there you have it, if you have been procrastinating about getting some more orders in (or a first), here is your motivation, and don't forget that Justin will get this done sooner than we think!!

Also a huge shout out to the volunteers that have created and nurtured this event, Matt, Joe, Scott etc etc and the Trail Angels that help the cyclists along the way and post to keep us involved, Kristian, Como, The Outdoorsman, etc etc...

And a huge hug to the girls....Caroline, Tori (whom just finished!!!), The Shelia's, Jackie and Cricket.  I hope to follow in your tire treads one day!

Happy July 4th

I was ringing the cow bells for Craig when he rolled by me 0.7 km from the finish (11-11:30ish).  He smiled but didn't stop!  Ross Delaplane finished up this evening around 8:25.  Crazy Larry rolled in to help me welcome him in!

It's tough to say, but the route he's on is dirt from El Vado lake down to at least Regina, maybe La Jara.  The official reroute is all pavement.  He's probably allergic to asphalt.

Looks like he camped in front of the Regina, NM fire station... pulling in at 11pm last night.   Maybe they have an outside water tap?   Not much else in that town.  Post office is located in the gas station.   Tough for him to have to take the fire detour...and miss Brazos Ridge.   Makes it impossible to level the race not only between different years but between racers in the same year!

very much so. That is why I fall back on the fact that everyone that tries it has great spirit and all those who finish it are winners.

Here's a photo of the balloon finish line that Crazy Larry put up.  Ross hammed it up for him as he came across.

Overnight: Stephen Huddle called in from Helena. This call is broken up. Cricket Butler called in from Helena. James Hodges called in from Chama. JP Evans called in from his finish, running shuttle for the racers coming in. He, Ray Porter, and Tom Sap all finished together.

And this morning Luke Bush called in from Grants.

Since Justin is attempting a no-reroute finish, what is his plan for the fire areas? Is this no longer an issue? Does anyone have the inside story?

When roads and trails are legally closed, then riders are forced to re-route. Sucks, but Justin won't be able to to complete the "regular" route if there are fire closures--at least without experiencing one or more of the following 1) going to jail for breaking the law, 2) being burned to death in a wildfire, 3) being run over by a fire crew.

The reroute I got actually turns to dirt for 16 miles, starting at the res. HW 112 ends, dirt begins (forget the name of the road), dirt ends and then HW begins again. Scratched my head for a little while trying to figure out what's up, until I talked to a local. If it's wrong, it's the best I could do. Checking Google Maps, *they* have it wrong, as does the ACA map, which has the HW/Resovoir relationship totally off. Regardless, it worked Smiley

Thanks for the reminder, finally placed my order. Looking forward to reading the book while thinking about a '13 attempt (maybe, possibly, we'll see...)

Don't know enough about how fire restrictions are lifted - but I found this site that allows you to overlay the data taken from overflies onto google earth.

http://www.lasconchas.lanl.gov/index.html

The latest photos are from Friday showing the burn heading to the East of Abiquiu. Can anyone fill in what the impact of this is likely to be?
