The Sheilas have hit Silver City and hopefully should make AW tomorrow (Friday). The sag wagon has departed Austin to collect them - were it not for prior travel plans, I would have hoped to be in it.

It's been great following the blue dots, folks - inspiring me to do that ride myself!

My 2 volumes of Cordillera arrived at the end of last week and I have already enjoyed reading them.

As a spectator who didn't know much about the race before June, it would have been very useful to read these books before the race.

So if someone who plans to do the race in 2012 is reading these discussion posts, I recommend getting copies of the books for each of your family and friends. They will much better understand what you have gotten yourself into. Also they will be a lot more enthusiastic and knowledgeable fans during the race.

Wonder what Justin's up to...it's unusual for his SPOT to have stayed in the same place for 10 hours...out of batteries or just not on?

Someone needs to design a Spot that will run for 30 days on one charge for the Great Divide. I don't think a racer has a chance to worry about batteries with the compressed timeline they have to finish, when pedaling, eating and sleeping are the main concerns. Maybe build it with a photo voltaic cell on one side, so it recharges in the sunshine during the day? I would doubt highly that the shops along the way are going to carry lithium batteries for sale along the way, they are just waaaay too expensive for carrying costs.

With the Spot 1 I think Matthew used to put new batteries in at Silverthorne and he was good to go.

Overnight: Sheila Reiter called in from Silver City. Mark Erhart called in from his finish. He and several riders crossed together: Will Snow, Greg Phillips, Simon Harling, and Reinhold Mueller. And Sheila Torres-Blank called in from Silver City, not Antelope Wells…yet!

I guess he has a mechanical - looks like he is pushing up hill and coasting down. He talked of buying some pedals in WalMart - Grants is not the best of places to fix things! It is still a long way to Silver City to get that fixed though.

It's been great following this race, but I have a quick question. What type of lights are people using? Also, how did the leaders, who never seemed to stop moving, have time to recharge their lights?  Thanks a ton - I did a bunch of searching but couldn't come up with an answer.

I took a lot of photos on the last stretch of the race, going through them now.  Here's one that I really l like.  Pretty sure it's Daniel Bayley.

Love seeing all the other pix that folks took, post 'em when you have time!

A bunch use princeton tec eos II.  They use aaa batteries.  I was getting a couple to 3 nights out of a set of lithiums.  No need to recharge.  Yea, it is wasteful. There were all sorts of lights in use though.  The most common one I saw was the eos.  I had 2 of them; one on the bike and one on my helmet.  They worked great coming down Fleecer Ridge at 11 PM being chased by a pack of wolves.

Lights, Both Kurt and myself used Fenix LD20's, I had two, one helmet, one handlebar, Kurt ran just one on the helmet. They are pretty bad ass, bit brighter, longer throw, in my opinion than the EOS. Uses 2 AA's, use lithiums and they go for a while, lots of adjustment in light throw, from barely there to damn bright. We were both riding a fair amount at night, so it was needed, some use less light and stay on the day light side of things.....Jefe

FR 30040 from mile 42.9 to the Togwotee lodge has been closed due to bear activity.
Just went up 287 and am at the lodge drowning my sorrows with a coke.
