I saw Josh w/serge at my drive at 2:12 today- told Josh his spot wasn't sending so i imagine he messed w/it
Eszter rolled thru about 10 min later- she seems to be in great spirits, said the snow was really deep soft and long, said they just kept talking about chinese food.

Looks like Josh Shifferly jumped from Eureka to Whitefish but no tracks on course. Hmm..?? He was having some leg pain/issues before leaving -- but maybe just riding with Ezter and spot was not on?
I'm sure Josh didn't cut the course - last year he stayed with the top 5 until pulling out at his home in Colorado. He is the real deal ! Those Spots can be a little hinky - turning them on and off with cold, gloved hands when you are half asleep doesn't help either. |

This link of a wind map of the USA was sent to me by a friend, I liked to look at it when following the round the world racers as they cross the USA. http://hint.fm/wind/For a currently armchair cyclist following this ride I found it gave me a sense of what perhaps the riders are facing wind wise. Sorry if its already been posted. Nick |

He was probably wondering what the heck that old guy was doing taking photos of bike riders out in the middle of nowhere. I corrected my original post regarding the location to say "...headed towards Polebridge" (not Polson which is much farther south). |

Seem to remember you speaking strongly against SPOT tracking as well.  you are correct Scott. with that said, technology advancements are great, for sure and this armchair watching is sweet. as with anything there is growth and with that you start to take away the original intent and purity. the birth of Trackleaders is awesome, awesome, BUT now people carry smart phones and that is where it is NOW becoming different, again. IMO - as a competitor, looking up trackleaders on your phone = cheating, just sayin'. can't monitor it, but it is happening. looks like another cool night for em' but day time temps are picking up, 60+ for tomorrow around Seeley Lake. down here around the Idaho/Wyoming side of things, picked up more snow up high as well... |

Today's calls: Mike intrabartola called in Rolled into Eureka with Dave Meisner last night after 156 wet and snowy miles. Getting some food before heading out again. Not sure if it was Chris Bennett but he called in from Elkford. Had to hitch a ride to Elford to a bike shop for repairs. Wet an rainy – lots of folks having trouble with their brakes. Dan Haskin called in. Late start from Sparwood today. Recaps waking up to snow and then pummeled by weather past day, now experiencing some technical bikes issues. Everyone is having a blast…some with kitchen gloves! Gary Glunt called in from Sparwood. Getting a late start, but having a ball! Tracey Petervary called in from Eureka! She recaps her race up to this point. Have had some mechanicals, but sounds in good spirits. Ollie Whalley called in from Whitefish! Lots of snow on the passes. He’s got a new set of brake pads and is ready to go. Jim Stansbury called in from Sparwood. He stopped for picture by the big dump truck. On his way toward Flathead Pass and onward! Scott Grinwis called in to say he’s not feeling well and is OUT. Rudi Nadler’s parents called in to wish him luck! Eric Foster called in from Roosville. He dislocated his knee! He’s going to try to get that looked at but plans to keep riding! Billy Rice called in from Eureka. He’s happy not to be last! Sara Caylor called in from Eureka. She’s been going slow in the cold, took a spill in a creek, but is doing good otherwise. Fixie Dave Nice called in from Del Norte. He was run off the road by someone and tweaked his ankle! He’s pushing on, though. Go Dave! Way too many calls to do a summary show any justice. Sorry for the delay today but I was traveling to Texas. I’ll try to stay on top of things this week. SO good to hear folks calling in! |

Sleepy Time
It’s always interesting for me to look at all the SPOT’s, front to back around this time of day. Between 6pm to 8pm is when you pretty much “know” where you will soon be spending the night.
Looking at today’s SPOT’s I can see some racers who, deliberately or accidentally, “timed” it perfectly and will have great sleep options for tonight. Warm & dry with a smile after a long hard day. And ready to have a great day tomorrow, with another attempt at timing the next warm/dry bivy location.
On the other hand I see lot’s of SPOT’s that make me very very glad I am not them tonight! A few hours from now they will be thinking—this sucks, what the heak am I doing out here?
Ha, in this regard knowing the route is such a HUGE advantage.
Anyway, best of luck to all the racers in finding that perfect bivy location in the rain!!!!

There is shelter out there between Big Fork and Holland but it's not on route and not easy to find. Good luck to all the bivy soldiers tonight.

As a sideline follower for the first time I am addicted and focusing on a few people.
My Lady, Tracey Petervary. She has many long ultra distance experiences, many with me. This is her first time going this long by herself. As my wife I will pay most attention to her. Tracey is not the fastest lady out there but she is arguably the strongest and most experienced in this distance and is a veteran by tandem of the route. Go T Go!!

So good to hear Tracey call in today! I hated not being able to get the calls in earlier in the day but it couldn't be helped. I will try to get them up in the morning and at lunch each day. BIG thanks to Lifan (Lee-Fan) Hung for helping with the summaries! |

Some of those calls are just amazing. Sara going underwater while crossing a creek, tweaking a knee, Fixie Dave getting run off the road by some stupid guy. And then there's Eric Foster. The guy dislocates a knee, puts it back in place all by himself, and rides... 80 miles like this in the rain and snow in the middle of nowhere!
There are some real animals in mountain biking. I run into the occasional one on my rides. But nothing like the concentration of them on the TD!
Truly amazing!

Speaking of a dry bivy location—looks like there are 7 spots (including 3 pink and 1 yellow) & perhaps soon to be 8, stopped for the night at the one and only public cabin between Sparwood and the US border
Ha --this is a tiny cabin for 8, but better than playing with the bears
