As I recall, there is a store (the only store) and laundromat about three miles west of town.  That probably explains it!

It was a nice place to hang out - chairs on the front patio and such.  I learned some things about how locals consider mexican grey wolves when I was there

Message from Dylan - he had 195 mile day with a nighttime start in Cuba. He picked it up around mile 150 to make it to The Top of the World Store and resupply before it closed. Just 4 minutes to spare...

It seems like the section between Pie Town and Silver City is pretty tough, maybe due to distance, lack of resupplies, fatigue... and that riders are going slower (well, less fast) through there.  Can anyone comment on this?
First there is Mangas Mountain.  Very pretty.  Sandy.  Saw a lynx there. relatively nice grades.
And Then, the Gilas.
The Gilas are TOUGH!

Locals in Silver City (and elsewhere) use a term - "Gila Tested."  This means your gear is capable of, well, almost anything.

You drink from cattle tanks.  Intrepid riders look for windmills because you probably don't have to filter. Beaverhead Work Center is a nice place, but payphone, bathroom, soda machine, water, that is about it.  I expect all the crews are out working fires right now.

It gets lost in this ride, mostly because of Montana.  Our riders who drop, and attitude in general, are set in flathead/montana.  So we are led to believe that NM is just a ride-through -

but don't let them fool you.  The Gilas are toadily kicking their butts but they don't report it because it is 1)close to the end and 2)they are quite used to butt kickings. Northbound riders know it.

I thought Montana easier, but I am just a tourist

Pie Town to Beaverhead was quite nice, I recall moving fairly quick.  100 miles in 11.5 hours iirc - and I was towards the back.  After Beaverhead it was a LOT tougher..  I had no idea about hard the 12 mile singletrack section was.  I had thought I could get the 26 miles to Silver in ~3 hours as 14 of them was on tarmac.  3 hours in I had done just 6 miles, was totally spent, and it took me 6+ hours to do this 26 mile section.  Hardest section of the route?

On the way into Beaverhead I was looking forward to the soda machine and then the last 20 miles started to worry if it would be empty.  Very relieved when I got there and 2 of us grabbed 5 cans for the evening and next morning.

One for the supporters; despite everybody saying how tough the whole TD thing is remember you can get bottles of Starbucks Frappuccino in 95% of stores along the way so not really the ordeal / hell the riders make out!

I thought Montana was easier. Definitely.

Steeper, rougher trail in the Gila.

For me as a NoBo, there was also the altitude ajustement, coming very early (2nd and 3rd day). A lot of the Gila is above 7,000 ft. Most of Montana is below 6,000, and the Canadian section is even lower than that. I was sucking air.

The dropout rate last year was far higher for Nobos than for Sobos (60% attrition for Nobos, just 32% SoBos). The difference IMO: the Gila on the 2nd and 3rd day, although it's also true that the Montana section was simply easier due to re-routes.

Cje sells sea cjells by the seacjore!

Shall Cjell's swell quell Serge's surge where Serge excels? Can't tell, as Cjell's shelled his cell near Hartsell's jail cell. Wish well, Serge and Cjell!

Calls overnight: Tracey Petervary called in from Del Norte. She sends thanks to Absolute Bikes in Salida. She recaps her ride and had to take a moment after getting sick. Mel Liebling called in from Rawlins. She made it across the basin and made a few friends. And Michael Cleveland called in from Rawlins. He recaps a rough ride on narrow pavement.

Brilliant!

Fascinating character.  Speaking of frugality, check out http://cjellmoney.wordpress.com/2011/10/08/205/ for more insight on what his mom referred to.  Reading that post and then considering his current achievement is pretty cool.  Living large he is.

That was a great finish by Serge. He looked like he was having trouble from Pie Town to Silver City, and then just rode it on in to the finish. Wow. Great ride!

Ok, Jarral and Eszter, you're next! Here's hoping the heat, sand, rattlers (I hate it when they stretch out on the road early in the AM), and coyotes don't slow you down, and your legs and bikes hold up for a few more miles.

A Rohloff can be fit on virtually any bike with disc brake mounts. There is no real compatibility issue to deal with.

safe riding,
