it looks to me like JayPs spot is still transmitting from where it is sitting....someone closer than me should go grab it.

I'm about an hour away in Missoula and was considering going after it tomorrow.  He may be beyond Butte at that point.  However, I could mail to a bike shop somewhere down the route.  Does anyone know how to get the coordinates of where it last transmitted from?

Also, would doing this be considered outside help?

well, he didn't ask that it be picked up and sent along... so trail magic?
of course, you'd have to call / text / email / smoke signal him the name of the bike shop...
and hope that he came through at the right time.

Scott Morris might be able to get the coordinates. It's about 5800' up on the SE side of Huckleberry. The good news is it's bright orange. I know Matthew Lee has been reached out to to see about a replacement but don't have details. Finding this one would be great.

No harm in picking it up to be returned to JP at a later date, but for the remainder of this particular ITT, given the rather intense amount of scrutiny around "purity", I would let JP, Spot and his CC take care of this in accordance with good 'ol Rule #2.

I just hope he does it before Antelope Wells, b/c this is brewing to be one incredible run.

Ha. I think from Great Falls, I'd have to be JayP to be fast enough to get JayP's SPOT to get back to JayP, before JayP is too far away, even using all the paved alts.

What were there for the Grand Depart 5 to 6 snow passes? 8 to 12 hours additional time??
I think the heat, dust, and smoke might more than make up for it.
Wish the spot was still with him! sad2

the other factor will be the conditions of the roads. they had moisture in them for the GD, and now a lot of the roads around me are a mess, loose, dry, gravelly, and rocky....waaaay way slower than they were back in June....not to mention fire closures, we have two large fires around Bozeman right now, and more are starting literally every day now all over MT.....not good.

It would be great if you could do that Aaron. I really do not think this would be considered outside help. Will you please keep me posted on your plans? & let me know if I can help in anyway. Thanks!

If anyone in the Butte area has a spot JayP can borrow that would be great! He should be there around 7-8 pm tonight.

I've got the coordinates from Scott and and he agreed that this would not be considered outside help.  I'll try to get it tomorrow morning and drop it in the mail by the afternoon.  Any ideas on where I should send it?  We're heading into a holiday weekend so there is no way its going to arrive anywhere before Tuesday.

Is there a rule that says you have to carry the SPOT? I looked but couldn't find one?

Sweet! Thanks. I will figure it out and advise on where to send it. Really appreciate you doing this.

Recommended for Grand Depart but not required.  Required for ITT: (http://tourdivide.org/ittdivide)

"Abide by TD Rules, carry a SPOT GPS tracker or other brand of GPS logger/tracker, and finish in no more than twice the standing course record (17days x 2) to be eligible for the same Divide racing General Classification that ranks group racers. Contact us for more info."

or other brand of GPS logger/tracker

If he's carrying a GPS that creates a track log it seems like that would meet this requirement.

Seems like a GPS that saves logs would be acceptable, so that Matthew (and/or Scott?) can verify route compliance.

This whole thing about providing Spots to people is ridiculous. If it's being done to assist the racer (by enabling him/her access to 911, check-ins, custom messages, etc.), then it's support. If it's done to satisfy the urges of Spot-stalkers, then it's interference. Either way, it's NOT self-support, and it's not serendipitous trail magic. Bah!

The only reason Jay is carrying a spot is to prove he completed the course, believe me, I know he'd rather NOT carry it. The SPOT is not going to help him in anyway, if anything it will slow him down, it's more of a pain in the ass to take care of the SPOT then anything. Wah-wah-wah, gesh already!
