I suppose it goes back to mike's original goal of limiting rules, doping just is cheating and we all agree. But further we have no way to test it anyway.
Makes sense and I'm certainly not implying that we should be testing, but I'm just saying that some people might not think of it as true cheating if they are taking things that are legal to take. Maybe something as simple as "Taking doping products is considered cheating". |

What's something legal to take? If you need sudafed because you're sick then take it. If you have a testosterone patch because your doctor prescribed it then take it. If you're using testosterone to recover at night you're cheating.
If you go down the path of trying to define it you will require a huge list of rules for this topic. Also doping crap costs a lot for most things. In a sport with no prizes I think that's somewhat self limiting though I admit someone might still do it. Then again they can arrange car rides too and just turn their spot off.

With the smartphone 'rule' discussion...who has the final decision on all 'rules'? It seems that this race is supposed to be simple, but as more and more people become interested in both participating and following it, inevitably is becoming more complex.

The TD crew makes the rules. If you don't like them though you can TT the route by your own rules. State them and go. IMO most attempts following the core of Mike's GDR ideas are all the same to me. Do it by yourself, ride the whole route under your own power.

Is there a reason for a Dr to prescribe anyone a testosterone patch? Apart from the fact that you are getting old? I'm serious here. |

It is a slippery slope to go down as who is going to police any (more) rules? A lot of Grand Departees had trouble even hearing back from the organisers that their LOIs had been received. It seems to me that the intent here is to be true to yourself (and hence, other competitors) and ride the route as a personal challenge with the reward being finishing as best you can. The beauty of this race seems to be in it's brutal simplicity? As for the Golden Spike, I am tipping north of Rawlins. How tough is the terrain ahead of Dave Nice as he and Cjell head through Steamboat? |

Looks like two riders stayed on the frontage road along I-15 rather than getting on the main highway for the descent into Butte. About a mile and 6-800 ft of climbing back up from the dead end they ran into. Is this a common problem?? At least it is all downhill on smooth pavement once they get back up.  |

Let's talk race, not rules, please. The gap between someone named Ollie and someone named Stappy is now 7 miles, whereas it was 20+ early today.
Plenty of other people making seriously good ground today. There's going to be a record number of sub-20 day finishes if this keeps up. Hopefully there will be no fire re-routes down South and all times are legit.

Not common, as far as I know. For time I've seen that error. It's less than 400ft elevation to regain. |

Totally independent problems or feed times? I'm sure it'll look like he waited if Craig catches him and they ride off together, but I suppose whatever Ollie is stopped for, when Craig rolls by, they'd say hi and probably roll together just because, unless Ollie had some sort of issue to prevent that, or didn't see him if he was resting roadside or whatever. |

Long Ranger took a wrong turn south of Helena a bit ago, taking a wrong way turn on Lump Gulch Rd. Back on track now. He was riding close to TT, (my co-worker).
PF took a different route into Helena today - he has had some injuries, might be the reason.
Is posting the above pedantic and not worthy of posting? I find routing 'variations' interesting but I won't post them if it is immaterial.

Just 'cuz their Spot dots are not moving, doesn't mean they are stopped ...
I'd say Group 2 is more like:
2a: Serge
2b: Kurt
2c: Garret,Eric, Adam
2d: Eszter
2e: Jarral and the Tandems (sounds like rock band, or maybe doo-wop)
These are 20 to 30-mile gaps we're seeing here. Which is basically 2 to 3 hrs.
