It looks like Eszther Horanyi is pushing on for a post-midnight arrival in Lincoln. That should set her up well to maintain her 150+m/day average. Impressive!

Just noticed she's up into 4th (depending on how everyone refreshes) with EL nursing that foot. Only 5 hrs ride behind the 2 leaders...
Any idea what Terry Brannick is looking for?

Just noticed she's up into 4th (depending on how everyone refreshes) with EL nursing that foot. Only 5 hrs ride behind the 2 leaders...
Any idea what Terry Brannick is looking for?
Based on the maps, he could be heading to a campground or a room South of Condon. Just a guess. |

I appears to be a straight, paved road, so it might be a wise move (warm night's sleep with a few off-route miles as a time penalty). To continue on would mean a late night arrival at Seeley. |

Union was pretty dry for us in 2009, just a short section of snow walking but I got hammered by rain (with Kurt) into Pinedale where he had previous broke his derailleur.
However on the backside of Tog there was much snow, mud and pushing. Very cold after midnight.
Yep Chris. You guys missed the Union mud in 2009 I guess. Some chasing you weren't so lucky though. I saw a group of 5 riders at the Mexican restaurant right at dark. (Blaine, Cannon...) They rode into town in a thunderstorm, gully washer and decided to find shelter for the evening. Saw Lobeck the next day, haggered at the Subway. He got caught on Union in the rain and was covered in mud. (I was living in Pinedale then.) The tog backside (to Books Lake Lodge) was a mess for us 2010'ers too. I imagine it will be this the same this year. |

The tog backside (to Books Lake Lodge) was a mess for us 2010'ers too.
Sucker-punch to the gonads is how I remember it best. All that "easy" spinning from Flagg Ranch along Jackson Lake via pave, then a little dirt, then a long pave climb to Tog Pass, only to be crest the top and walk 3 to 4 miles in snow and mud. That took some mental hardness, or helped develop it, i'm not sure which anymore. Just glad a got through before it got too dark. But I digress ... The race is still solidly in Montana, and there's that famous TD adage ... 'make it through Montana, make it to AW' ... and the section from Lincoln to Wise River has plenty of challenges to offer the front-runners. ... this is a great running of the event so far... plenty of hard, earnest efforts by all riders. |

If so I think it would be very hard for any of them to reach Helena tonight.
10:36pm race time: OW and CS are on the doorstep of Helena! Nice pull! That makes a clean break from the pack, since the "chasers" are still miles out from Lincoln. I don't have the mileage between the 2 towns handy at the moment, but it's somewhere in the range of 5 to 7 hours of riding in the rain/mud, in daylight. Assuming no slow-downs by the front runners, someone's gonna have to pull an all-nighter or two, doesn't have to be now but sometime in the next 10days, to catch these rabbits. |

Lava Mtn (infamous for some) between Helena and Basin is a tall, gnarly, steep one, and could be cold and wet, depending on weather and river/stream run-off conditions. Plenty of spots where the trail is right next to volumes of flowing water between Helena and Butte. The true TD stunt to pull at this point for them is NOT to grab lodgings in Helena. Food, dinner, yes, but hotel? They spent the night out last night, so why not head up the road out of town and do the same tonight? |

Couple of other race developments I'm noticing this evening...
Jarral Ryter continues to surge up the pack ... and continues to make up some serious ground in the past 2 days after being slowed by some mechanical issue. Probably misses his local riding friends EH and JS. Impressive.
Also, looks like a position change for the women in the 2nd and 3rd spots, with KW continuing on past Seeley Lake in the night as TP has gone into town.

In 2010 I found Togwotee Pass at night to be the spookiest section of the route. I have never seen so many eyeballs reflected back at me. Hundreds and hundreds of little glowing eyes. I figured the bears in this area were well fed as it was difficult to walk through without accidentally stepping on a jackalope... really I could almost reach out and grab them! It was the last long snow push in 2010 and a real a**kicker. |

Doubt it. His SPOT has been spotty so far so could be that or that he hasn't turned it back on yet. Maybe those two are messing with us  |
