Looks like Justin (LR) pushed on through the night. Now how far will he continue on?

Hey Vance, I remember finding you in the road and telling you about Hungry Bear. I think it was John ( can't remember his last name) who took the photo. I never saw it either. I think he made it to Polaris and had health issues that forced him to drop. I hope you are doing well. Cheers, Derek Derek: Yes, you did! You are my Hungry Bear. Oh, that sounds wierd! Miss you man! In 2008 that was were John Nobile made his second break (the one that stuck). A bunch of us stayed in Wise River while he and Geoff rode over the hill. Not easy to do while dog tired, but still one of the easier stretchs on the divide, even with the cracks before the climb starts proper.
Ollie and Craig are doing awesome. If they make it to Island Park tomorrow, that'd probably put them a full day ahead of the chasers (starting from Butte, it's hard to see any of them getting to Lima, but I'd happily be amazed!).
The Scenic ByWay was surreal for me last year. As I was going up, the sun was shining at the bottom. It started raining about half way up and at the top it was snowing. After a few turns at the top, I came across another pack of wolves.

I told one of the guys I work with, "Eszter can drag my dead carcass faster than I can pedal!"

No surprises with Ezter she is tough as nails. I wonder if she will drop some of the guys riding with her, further along the way. Don't be surprised if she makes a top 3.

I noticed Mark F has gone off the trail a couple of times, one time he had to backtrack a few miles, not sure if he left something behind or thought he had taken a wrong turn, either way he has been trying to catch the one SS rider in front of him and he is getting close. Go Mark!
Yeah it's been fun/stressful to watch. Looks like Justin made a wrong turn last night and then stopped to sleep so Mark may just catch him before he takes off this am (part of me thinks Justins SPOT isn't on yet today). Only 4 miles difference if their positions are accurate. Would be fun to see them ride together as the clear SS leaders right now.

Go Eszter! She is rocking it! I heard from Eric S she is a really strong rider. I wouldn't be surprised if she makes it to the top 3!

Yep, I wouldn't be surprised if Eszter put in a top 3. I also wouldn't be surprised if Jarrel and/or Garret P finished in the top 3. Garret is a former domestic pro roadie (I think Bissel and Health Net) who finished 2nd in the CTR last year. He is extremely tough and seemed like a heckuva nice guy while we rode together last year. The same goes for Jarrel, save for the former pro roadie part. Ha!

Ollie & Craig were the first of the 2012 TD riders to drop into the Grasshopper valley. They stopped by for breakfast and a quick look at the TD website. As they departed High Country Lodge they rode through a cattle drive...they seemed to have no problem getting right through. I think Ollie's experience with domestic livestock back home helped them but that's another story...rolling fat sheep to be sheared...it's true.

Sounds like the top 15 are a who's who. Top 15 right now include 3 women (all ahead of record pace), a Tandem (a bit behind record pace?), and is about half Vet half Rookie. And don't forget about the NoBo riders... Very good mix. It's a little early, but any guesses on Golden Spike this year? Roughly Rawlins, WY?

I'm a little surprised that we're 3 days into Montana and nobody has mentioned mosquitoes yet!
Last year when I arrived in that region (NoBo), I changed my overall objective from 'not being eaten by a grizzly' to 'not being eaten by mosquitoes!'
Those things are voracious!

Yes she is. I saw her motoring into Durango after her CTR finish. Looked pretty casual and fresh chatting with another rider along the way. You'd never know she just shattered the womens record in a year when the weather was so miserable. I have to say that I'm now rooting for her overall placing as much as the womens reccord. Hope she and her bike stay health and avoid mishaps. Go Eszter!

I'm a newbie, but what are the rules regarding riding together? Pacing, drafting, etc. Working together they will put this race away. Ollie & Craig were the first of the 2012 TD riders to drop into the Grasshopper valley. They stopped by for breakfast and a quick look at the TD website. As they departed High Country Lodge they rode through a cattle drive...they seemed to have no problem getting right through. Interesting to see how OW fairs with the Rohloff setup. Seems like he's had the right gear range to tackle Montana (knock on wood).

Fingers crossed for Justin Simoni (Long Ranger). Camped out on the pass last night and now looks to be heading back down to Lincoln. Hope he and his bike are ok but could be something significant as he must have felt the push to Helena was too far and backtracking was his best option.
As for the Rohloff - I have always felt it gives me too little GI on the low end regardless of the ring I run up front so I bet the granny gears are just fine for the steeper stuff in MT and CO while gears 11-14 are likely going to be perfect for WY and NM.
