As for the Rohloff - I have always felt it gives me too little GI on the low end regardless of the ring I run up front so I bet the granny gears are just fine for the steeper stuff in MT and CO while gears 11-14 are likely going to be perfect for WY and NM.
agreed. I'm not sure what belt combo he's running, but my 50x20 was just fine last year. |

For all you dot watchers who are unfamiliar with the event, the section from Basin to Butte Montana includes a ride down interstate 15. Last year I filmed this descent and hit speeds greater than 40 mph - fully loaded, which is an absolute blast !  At the end of the descent, you make a right into the OutDoorsman and meet Rob Leipheimer and his friendly crew for a hot meal, quick bike tune up and hotel room if needed. Last year when I rode into Butte I got a pizza from the Papa Johns. I had never had their pizza before and I thought it was amazing! About a month after getting home I told my wife "we should get some Papa Johns pizza, it's pretty good". She looked at me kinda weird. She knew something was wrong. Needless to say, the next time I get Papa Johns pizza, I'm gonna ride 700 miles to get it.

You'll have to ask Mac, but we've been looking at that section for a couple years, and I think you'll see it change in the next few. Another option that Matt has been looking at is to head down towards Elliston (via the road TracyP mistakenly went down last night), hit some CDT, and drop into Butte from the north/northwest. If you've got something specific in mind, I'd be stoked to hear some beta: cgreene (at} adventurecycling . org Or, maybe we could go ride it sometime  |

Hell ya Missoula!
It dosen't surprise me. Adam's one of the toughest guys around. Pretty much the only person in town he can't drop in the mountains is Sam Schultz.
He's also been out on this section in the last 6 weeks. So, he knows the climbs well.
Get that soak in! I was down at Elkhorn on Sunday (in between trail digging fests on Richmond Peak). One of my favorite spots in MT.
who are the Missoula riders? I have to root for them having grown up in Missoula |

I'm seeing a possible separation at the 3rd/4th position where Serge C is 12 to 14 miles up the road while Kurt S hangs in Wise River...
Leaders are motoring ... just about over the high point in the Medicine Lodge area ... couple more hours and they're in Lima.
Also noticed that Katherine W motored right through Basin without stopping. It's always tempting to slow down in towns to "see what they got to offer". That goes to show that she's got solid time-management skills, opting to not waste any time and move on the Butte for a more efficient stop (food+repairs in one).

I don't know which, but I'd say neither. His last spot is 2-1/2 hours old now, so I'd say that after going up so far/high last night he's headed back to Lincoln for some sort of services/help. He might do a call-in to explain. Also looks like we've got another rider missing the turn at Poorman Ck, with Paul Spencer up on Stemple Pass proper which is NOT on route. |

Ollie's used the Rohloff in hillier events in New Zealand and been fine. I suspect the high gear limit will be fine (with tire legs, at least).
Damn mozzies nearly carried me away in Idaho - the worst I've ever encountered.
The railtrail after Island Saddle was the first place I regretted having rigid forks. Will be interesting to see if that part sees a split in any groups.

Just want to add to those not intimate with the route: The stretch from Basin to Butte, by looking at trackleaders, you would think it is an easy highway stretch. The facts on the ground are quite different. The actual route parallels the highway more or less and is quite a rough roller-coaster until the final decent into Butte. Much of the stretch is signed as a "Non-Maintaned Cattle Trail". Relief finally comes on the final decent which is on I-15. You can see the entire West from there.

I'm a little surprised that we're 3 days into Montana and nobody has mentioned mosquitoes yet!
Last year when I arrived in that region (NoBo), I changed my overall objective from 'not being eaten by a grizzly' to 'not being eaten by mosquitoes!'
Those things are voracious!
I wonder if the relatively cool temps and the rain have kept them under control? |

71 yr old Larry Hipskind still in Canada, spot tracker indicates slow movement, maybe pushing? Hope he calls in when he makes it to the US, would love to hear of his adventure.
