Wow! Eszther Horanyi pulled into Island Park over two days ahead of the women's record split. Additionally, she was ahead of the tandem and SS record splits. Wow!

Earlier on this strand, I predicted a sub 20 women's record by Eszther Horanyi. That might still happen but in looking at the record splits I noted this. Men's--17+ Tandem--18+ SS--19+ Based on that, a 20 day and some odd hours women's record would be both aesthetically pleasing and make the records easy to recall.  Wink

Based on my reading of the rules, I would say 'no way'. I'm pretty sure that navigation assistance from anyone other than trail locals or other racers is forbidden and can lead to relegation.

Cjell looks on course to me...and contacting him is a no, no.  Finding your own way is part of the challenge, and rules.

Slight over cast and temps in the upper 60's today in the Pioneers.  It looks like 10 or 12 TD riders will pass through today.  Georg spent the night and was off for Lima and beyond this morning.

Hi DenisVTT, Ryan's girlfriend here.

Yes, Ryan has done all sorts of "ultra endurance" events... RAAM, spin record attempt (had to stop after 6 days, 20 hours due to extreme hallucinations), cycling from Alaska to Argentina and a variety of other "crazy" things

Unfortunately the spin record attempt has left his with some pretty challenging foot injuries. He is definitely battling these issues out on TD, as he mentioned in his MTBcast call in last night, but he's a trooper and I'm routing for him (of course!)

Hi RCTracker:

FWIW, when I go to spin class, I get hallucinations after 20 minutes!   icon_biggrin

Seriously, that's a very impressive "resume" for such a young guy!

Speaking of a field of  "crazies", let's not forgot that both Dave Goldberg and Kurt Sandiforth completed the full AZT 750 a short few months ago in April of this year, and have stated intentions of doing a Triple Crown of sorts by adding the CTR after the TD.  There's also plenty of riders with one or many CTR's under their belts.  Also, it was mentioned previously that Garret P is former (current?) pro roadie.  And, let's not forget how much "craziness" is coupled on the Blue tandem at the moment.  Jill's blog lays out some impressive women's resumes.  Last year's TD finisher Mike Hall just set some sort of around the world record.  And, and, and, ...

Looks like the 3 guys (GP, ES, AJ) are real close to pulling in Kurt S as long as they don't party too long at Flagg Ranch while Kurt makes time along Jackson Lake.  Serge C solidly in 3rd.  Serge has been riding alone since Wise River ...

Looks like Craig and Ollie, the leaders stayed indoors in those cabins or motel there on the 287 Hwy last night.  Late lunch in Pinedale!  Depending on how long they take to eat and re-supply, they're looking at being up on the record pace by 6 hours or so by the time they "clock in" through Boulder.

Do these guys go into withdrawls when not on a bike? Smiley

It looks like Jo Ann Burtard is riding a cross bike (crumpton).  That'd be interesting.  I don't think anyone has completed the TD on a cross bike.  I think some have attempted it and stated, never again do to flats, etc.

I definitely raced in 2009 with lots of sleep relative to Matt and was beating all his town to town splits. I enjoyed flying up each climb. Matt was just taking less time off the bike and riding more. To be at the front you have to be efficient either way and be eating, sleeping or riding at all times.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this was not as much under your control as one would think.  On the SS, especially with 32.17, you are forced to go fast just to keep cadence high enough that you can generate enough power to stay upright.  Put another way, when cadence gets down below 40, you have to generate near *maximal* pedal force to maintain power at threshold.  This relationship is really sensitive to cadence, power not so much (power is the dependent variable here).

If that doesn't make sense search the 2-epic SS posts for quadrant analysis or QA.

Bottom line: racing SS requires a different strategy, and that strategy is going to be heavily impacted by gear choice.  Last year Jefe rode a smaller gear and was able to ride a strategy more in line with Kurts - long days, shorter recoveries.  Could be Jefe is just superhuman though Wink

Super impressive ride those guys are laying down.  Considering all the of the hiking they have had to do so far that Jay did not have to do in his Aug start, I can only guess that held them back at least 12 hours.  One of those guys (if not both) is destined to raise the bar.  The fly in the ointment is that friggin' fire in the Gila.

Anyone know if the route is for certain subject to fire closure in the Gila at this time?

Some of that is true for sure Dave but Kurt and I were riding together and we'd stop conservatively to get some sleep knowing Matt was likely pushing on. As to how much further I could push towards ride longer, I don't know. Personally I'd have to be willing to go over the limit to find out. In 2009 I didn't want to cross that line. If I went crazy and raced it again I'd be willing to cross that line even if that lead to dropping out.

Crossing the line...an interesting thing to think about.  What does that mean if it doesn't work?  Mandatory DNF or just stop for 10 hours & regroup?

I really liked how you put it yesterday.  Part of the learning process in bikepacking (as a genre and for an individual) is understanding goals and consequences.  LW & I like to say you can have a goal to PR (or go for a record time), or to finish, but not both.  What you stated yesterday (something along the lines of "if I am going to be away from my family I'm going to crush or get crushed") is very clear!
