I read Ethan Passant saying that to do well in this type of race "don't ever reach a red-line, ever". I assume this is regarding pacing, effort and heart rate. Does this seem accurate to you all that have done this before? Is there any times when you do put the hammer down, or is it totally off the table to go hard?

different for everyone. know YOUR body and how to take care of it!! and i will disagree w/ the above statement.

Sounds like Max Morris is a little upset at two guys drafting.

Good to see racers willing to call out this bad behavior in public. There was a very similar situation last year, but I'm not sure if it ever became 'public knowledge' to spectators on this forum. Maybe its time for some bilingual volunteers to start working on translations of the TD rule page.

Does this seem accurate to you all that have done this before? Is there any times when you do put the hammer down, or is it totally off the table to go hard?
In general, feels accurate to me, but there's so much left unsaid.  The corollary (that often gets left out of the conversation) to going hard is 'recovery'.  In general, I can put the hammer down for a 5-hour-60-mile-XC-race, but it's preceded a few days by taper, nutrition, rest, and then I need a day to recover, followed by a few days of light-effort exercise, all the while focusing on rest, nutrition, etc.., before I can do it again.  So, I put the question back to you ... where is the time and space for all that "prep and recovery" in a non-stop endeavor like TD?

The gaps that are growing/shrinking in the TD are not due someone putting the hammer down, but they're all about time spent riding vs time spent stopped.
Look at how long it took for Jarral to make up time ... something like 6 to 7 days, but he's done it with consistent pace over a week, not by putting the hammer down.  Look at Serge C today, he got going 4 hours earlier that the 2 guys he's behind on now, then lost all that time in town (presumably for mechanical repairs).  You could say that "he needed" that extra 4 hour jump to stay "even" with the group riding for 3rd place.  And, he's probably got some sleep/rest challenges now since he was up so early, while the other riders are a little fresher.

For me, I feel like based on my 2010 experience "not slowing down" versus "going faster".  So, more like a race of attrition.  Like saying "hey, let's all ride this moderately steady pace, starting now, and see who 'cracks/slows/stops' first, who can ride for an hour longer today, who can get up an hour sooner and do it again the next day, or maybe who can just keep riding without resting, and we'll do that from point A to point B.  sound good?  alright, then.  go!".  But, then again, this viewpoint might change as I get a few more of these things under my belt.

As I write, I'm thinking that's not a very fun/exciting race from a TV-watching viewpoint, but SUPER fun and exciting from an adventure-of-a-lifetime (and Spot-done watching) viewpoint.

Kathrine at Rawlins Hospital???
Hope everything's okay.  Looks like she took a B-line to get there once in town, and didn't mess with following route first.

What are the chances Absolute Bikes is open just a little bit early tomorrow morning knowing that the leaders will be in town late tonight. Doesn't EVERYBODY stop at Absolute Bikes?

Justin Simoni (Lone Ranger) rode into Jackson because of a busted freewheel/hub. I had a Doctor appt over there and ran into him. Both of us at the same bikeshop today with the same issue. Busted rear wheels. Mine is being warrantied but Justin had to buy a new wheel. He is hoping to get back on route this afternoon. He was enjoying "riding" the passes this year after walking them in the snow last year as he refused to do the detours.

Actually, no.  I might be the one rider in TD history who didn't/hasn't (I kid!).

Hope he said something in person too.  His calls have been very matter of fact.  The first few talked a lot about the leaders not being to hold that pace, so I wonder if he knows how far ahead they are now Wink

You notice how often we see live start to finish coverage of a 2 hour Marathon or a long TDF stage. Wink

Got a picture of 2 Riders today (Tom Thomas on left, Nathan Mawkes on right) just south of Yellowstone Park.  They were really in a good mood and stopped to take a quick break as my family cheered them on from the highway. They said they are both having a good time and feel good.  Good luck guys - you looked strong.  Hope the mob of people watching the grizzly bear cubs off the road (5 miles ahead of this picture)  didn't hold up your ride.

TDR lurker who just registered for this forum just to be a part of the FFC!  While I am impressed with everybody who attempts this crazy event, and while there are a lot of great stories out there, we all have our favorites...so Go Mark!  Way to HTFU!!!

Welcome s.o.b.!  Glad Mark gave a shout out to your inability to finish a plate of ribs Wink

don't forget to add your favorite farnsworth quote to your signature. FYI, there is going to be an FFC meeting tonight, we will be making some tough decisions. I'll post the a summary tonight after the meeting.

Looking forward to the full report, prehaps form a bike on a windy climb?  Be sure to pack enough food and batteries Wink

We had an informal FFC meeting Saturday with a bunch of local riders and friends attending a go away lunch for s.o.b. above.  Mark was missed by all and quickly became the topic of discussion.  Lots of fun stories and quotes I wish I could remember now.  Thank goodness for call-ins by bike!

Looking good. Nathan is a rock. Rides very conservatively and will only get stronger. Man they are still wearing a heap of clothes !

Is the route incorrect right about where Serge is now (straight west of Kremmling)?  Seems like everyone goes "off route" there so I assume the route is actually wrong.

Touching end to Serge's last call BTW.  Sounds like he was choking up as he was ending the call.

Many riders go off route to Kremmling.  Just a couple of miles and it can be well worth it!  Check out the speeds on the downhill before town.  Fastest few miles I've ever covered.   ZOOOOOOOOM!!!

Calls tonight: Sara Caylor called in from Butte to say she’s OUT! After riding into Butte in search of replacement computer, all the aches and pains caught up with her and set her off her game. She wanted to thank everyone involved in putting event on. Looking forward to coming back next year. *She says she's sorry!? No need to be sorry, Sara! Great effort!

Mark Farnsworth called in from around Boulder. Lots of wind on the call but it sounds like his hitting some flatlands.

Dave Meissner called in from Pinedale. He had some respiratory issues last night and had to call an ambulance. He’s doing good after some O2 and is continuing on!

Fred Arden called in from Lima after getting a tired delivered. He’s going to wait till morning before heading out.
