I wonder if Ollie, considering his experience and success in brevets, is considering a final push to the finish?

I don't know how accurate race flow is on trackleaders but it's interesting to look at Ollie and Craig's lines.  Ollie's line is smoother whereas Craig's has more variability and has been getting more so as the race goes on.  Ollie's lines have remained smooth.  Possibly from his gearing??  Maybe just better at pacing over long distances?  I don't know but an interesting perspective.

OK, I think I just found these lines. They're the Speed & Speed/Time Plots at the bottom of each Rider's page, right? Yeah, quite different for those 2 guys! If you toggle windows b/w the two it's easy to see. Hard to imagine they've been riding together. Craig's is hugely more ragged and tends to look taller but I suppose the lows are also lower. Are they yo-yo'ing? That's how I'd read it.

What is riding a Rohloff like? I think I tried one a few years ago, along with a bunch of other hub-gears, for a couple days, and they ALL seemed to be noticeably inefficient except for their one direct-drive gear. I was shockingly underwhelmed. I'd been hearing how good the new hub-gears were. Like, I wouldn't want to try to ride hard on a hub-gear due to resenting the work-loss -- felt like 1-2mph at 20mph. But I was mostly using one (forget the name) and maybe didn't give the Rohloff enough of a try. The R also seems heavy-ish (rear-heavy, anyway). ...I see that a R system weighs 1800 gr vs 1600 for derailer sys, but that's with a chain on both. Apparently belts are lighter than chains.

Actually, you can look on the main page of trackleaders, half way down the page and the top 10 riders race flow is listed there.

'brevet' as in randonneuring events?
Or something different on the other side of the globe?

I'm surprised they spent so long in Abiquiu.  Probably had a big breakfast and waited for Bode's general store to open.  Either that or visiting the Georgia O'keef museum. The next section has a monster climb and no suppies for awhile.

Same Mike. He apparently is pretty active with them. Man, don't you wish we were out there?

So does anyone know yet if the C&O Express will be forced to reroute because of the fire?

I don't think the fire in the Gila will force a reroute.  Most of the closure is within the wilderness.

I'm concerned for Adam Jensen - does anyone have an update or maybe his spot batteries died?
He called me yesterday. Front wheel was seizing up. He was heading back to Salida to figure out what he wanted to do. He's got a plane ticket in Phoenix and with this mechanical he dosen't think he'll be able to finish the race in time to get there.

The map is misleading on names, two Gunnison's.

At one level we are shown as Fairplay but if you zoom in it shows Como.

Don't let the weather stations confuse you. There are multiple stations around towns, with slightly different names given by NCDC or the NWS. For some reason the stations on the map only give the town name, so there are several duplicates and you have to turn off current weather to see what town the weather station is really in or near.

Boy, you don't want to call the race too early. Anything can happen: brakes, wheels, lungs, spills...

I do. Thinking about how I can get out on the bike this weekend for an overnight... but I have to course check the 400k brevet too, not enough time to ride it (even breaking it into 2 and camping...). So it looks like the car for me.

For sure. I think there are at least 2 riders from past editions who were within 300 miles from the finish when they had to bail.

Ah man that sucks! any idea what hubs he was running?  Also it would be interesting to see what type of mechanical folks are having out there in a bit more detail.

Little bit of drag in the lowest 7 gears, I think their site or others had some stats.  It's when the primary 7 are reduced by a second gear, or something along those lines.  Makes a bit more noise in those, but the high 7 gears are silent.  They feel nice to ride, however I do feel the spin-up effort it takes relative to say a light normal hub to get the mass going.   The pause when shifting is small, like a slight 1/8th of a pedal stroke with reduced force.  They also shift while stopped, which is novel for stoplights and such.

Not sure of the model, but know it was an Easton. He looked at getting new bearings the first time he was in Salida but seem his model takes a non-standard size, or something, and they didn't have it in stock.

Just got back from a ride up north of Steamboat.  Passed Mark Farnsworth on the way out and the other guys I was riding with mentioned "that he looked like he'd been ridden hard and put away wet"!  I had to chuckle at the comment cause MF was clearly smiling as we rode by.  It was a nice morning in the 'boat though so that helps.  Although it's getting upwards of 90 degrees today so that could put the hurt on some riders late in the day.
