JP was superlucky last year for his whole year! What a year! He did all those amazing events, setting records all along. The coolest year's achievement I've ever encountered. Certainly for bikes but maybe for anything.
I'd think that encountering others along the trail would be a boost no matter how it was configured. Like, if C&O yo-yo'ed several times a day, getting half hour gaps in the meantime, then reeling back in for whatever reason -- different styles, pacing, etc. -- then even camping miles apart -- even if that happened they'd be getting a boost in all likelihood -- chasing, chatting as they passed each other, saying Hi, trying to parse each other's scene. In fact, a very loose contact pattern might be the most pleasant, low-stress and ... effective for synergy. Being around each other a lot each day may well become vexing.
The connections and influences we have on each other can be strong even when sporadic.
PS: Veggie has to be tough, but, whew, think of VEGAN. Have TD racers other than Deanna Adams tried that? (Her blog had a report a couple years ago about a So. Am. tour she did with a pal who tried to do it all RAW vegan. ...Mowing roadside fruit all day, whole melons, getting prisoner skinny. Deanna was feeling bad for him. He also had constant gut-bugs. I think she calls herself a "junk food vegan" or such.)
Yeah, Deanna's pal on the Central American trip was Adrian Stingaciu, vegan, of Ride the Divide fame: "I can't believe all I found in that store were these olives."

Ollie took a 20 minute break for lunch in Grants. Looks to me like he's gunning for it.
This will be fun to watch, even in trackleaders slo-mo! 11 miles isn't much of a gap, approx 1hr lead (?), but fun to see some separation regardless.

12:34 PM - Craig has stopped at Grants Walmart. 12:34 PM - Ollie is seven miles beyond the Walmart.
Craig may get a much better resupply than Ollie got at the convenience store. But Ollie got into town a few minutes before Craig, and Craig probably has no idea that Ollie blew through town without delay. Grants is spread out enough that Craig won't be able to ask the shop-keepers how long it's been since the last filthy racer came through, unlike the tiny towns where everybody stops at the same shops.

Looks like Craig is getting something at the Redbox??? No idea what that is but its on the Google. Ollie's riding ahead and the gap is up to 16 miles.

He's in the walmart. Those things are easy to get lost in.

Craig's had a mechanical. He is trying to get it resolved with some cheap parts from Wal-Mart and push to Silver City for proper parts.
Keep pushing, Craig!

Wal-mart could qualify as off-course!

Just like that, a new standard: we'll be seeing quite a few more Rohloffs on the TD in future editions methinks.

Looks like Craig's at the 4B restaurant now. Good looking joint! Hope he can figure out a fix soon!

they've got a 'mossy oak, men's hunter mountain bike, 26" on sale for $309... probably cheaper than the drivetrain on his rig.

It sounded like it was just a pedal bearing issue. No drivetrain problems.

Hopefully nothing a little WD-40 won't fix.

He should be able to steal a pedal.

The Long Ranger is riding strong now that he has a functional rear wheel and is right behind Mark Farnsworth. Looks like we might have a pretty good race for the singlespeed title.

Apparently that is not a rule violation. I could find where it says that you can't break the law.

I was wondering about Farnsworth. His spot has been in Steamboat for a day. Wonder if he is chillin' there or if the spot isn't operational.
