I agree. A team cat would be cool but it's up to ML.
We introduced a teams category to the Kiwi Brevet this year and it worked well. Didn't effect the results up front - all the fastest riders choose to ride as solos (including Ollie). Mind you, that event is a bit more relaxed about the rules (drafting allowed, fairings would be fine - no outside assistance is the main thing). It's more of a tour than a race. |

One solution for Craig would be to rent a car (at the Ford dealership? maybe that's what he was trying to do there,) drive to Albuquerque and find a bike shop there. It's about an hour drive. Of course that would require the bike shop to be open.
Edit: just heard his podcast. Sounds like he's got a plan.

And at least as of Cuba, those 2 were still ahead of JP's record pace as well. By something like half a day. |

Oh noes!!!111!1  I think there was a grizzly bear attack on a female, tandem, solo, single-speeder guy! A SPOT blip showed up and then 1.2 seconds later it showed up again! Quick, alert the authorities and tell Matthew Lee to enact a rule against grizzly bear attacks in the middle of the race, especially while I'm watching trackleaders.com PS. It's any wonder how the northbounders average 2700miles per/hr on the first day. Isn't there any way to tell them to slow down and not burn all their matches? Matthew Lee should enact another rule specifically banning northbounders from exceeding mach 3.5471. So, that's my take on it. Just sit back, shut up, and watch some blue dots. Adding speculation on what you think a rider has done only cheapens their enormous undertaking. I'm sure Matthew Lee is better informed then the lot of us and doesn't need us chiming in and telling him how to run his bike game and how to disqualify a racer in a non-sanctioned bike game for unauthorized use of a water bottle.  |

Is it something like 2am over there right now? Garret and Kurt and still hammering along. About 40 miles to catch up with Craig. With plenty of altitude on their side, I'm thinking they could have that knocked off by 5am. Some sleep in Milan perhaps? All this speculation is fun!

I listened to Craig's call-in. I didn't even know that crank eyes didn't come in a standard size across the board. Lame. It sounds like he's really stuck, such a bummer. Garret and Kurt will most likely catch him before his pedal arrives in the morning. Of course he'll have a lot more rest ... but that part of the race could get really interesting. Unless something happens to Ollie, though, at this point it's almost certainly a race for second. |

1/2" spindle for cheap one piece cranks like on bikes sold at department stores. |

humm, not a big deal to me as I am not in the race this yr & I hope I am wrong, but I would say this looks very much like a non-random TEAM effort.
Personally I would like ML to step up to the plate and address this sort of thing by officially adding a recognized Team category (with totally separate finish ranking/time).
I do think it would be cool for a team cat --where a couple of buds, husband/wife, father/son etc etc etc could do the TDR as a pre-arranged team, just keep it separate from the rest of the field
(but the TDR is ML's baby and he will do what he thinks is best)
That's a lot to tell from a picture! Team implies helping each other. Riding together is not the same thing. |

Now that 3rd and 4th have closed on Craig, we may see a surge in speed for 2nd place that puts 4 people across the finish ahead of the TD record. Ollie, Garrett, Craig and Kurt are all ahead of the record according to the latest projections on leaderboard. Garrett and Kurt will be short on rest from riding late into Grants last night into the morning. Although Craig got a hotel for the night, he had alot of stress yesterday and this morning trying to put hands on those pedals. I wonder if he is really rested?? One thing is for sure. The Gila has slapped around alot of folks (including me) in the past. There is hard riding in there and Garrett and Kurt are surely short on sleep. These guys came to race and I think the finish is gonna hurt.

Was the duct tape an attempted fix? - or perhaps hid the fracture for a while? Looks like the down tube near the head tube. Aluminum? Could be mended - on a weekday. Looks like the fork is pulled to prep it - get those cables off too. |

Too bad, he was having a good race.
Since he is already back in Salida, doesn't seem to be a big deal. A frustrating day pushing yesterday probably. But easy enough either to get the frame repaired or replaced there (and it's not that he would be broke by just grabbing a new bike). So a one day delay and a bad day yesterday. Seems par for the course, frame is just more expensive to fix than pedals or brakes. |

Georg's running a Rohloff IGH, so getting a replacement frame could be a problem. I hope not though, he's a good guy and has been working hard for the this race. He must have a a lot walking yesterday and today, as he was on the downhill going into Sargents.

If I understand correctly, he pushed for 15 miles until 3am. |
