I am Cjell's mom. In regards to his clothing.....he did do some bike racing in college and had all the appropriate clothing, shoes, etc. So he knows what the advantages of those choices. He has biked many places in the world and always looks pretty much like he does on this race. So I guess that is what he is most comfortable with. The helmet.....as his mom I am not happy with that choice but he is old enough to make his own decisions and I can only give my opinion. For someone who usually makes very good decisions this helmet one, in my opinion, is a poor one. But you gotta love the boy!!!!!!! He is one in a million. Always upbeat and loves what he does.
He is pretty frugal (that's putting it nicely) but he will put money into something important to him, ie his bike, but if he sees no advantage he won't buy extras (the clothing).
We are so proud of him. His dad is in Banff waiting for him to finish and I don't think he knows so it will be a big surprise.
Go Cjell!!!! Cjell's Mom: I believe you have done a wonderful job with your young man!! You raised him to be independent & make his own choices, which is exactly what he is doing!! Thank you for a job well done!! He has hammered out the miles today! It's been a privilege "watching" him! |

Dylan Thomas is taking a break just west of Pie Town on hwy 60.
As I recall, there is a store (the only store) and laundromat about three miles west of town. That probably explains it! It was a nice place to hang out - chairs on the front patio and such. I learned some things about how locals consider mexican grey wolves when I was there |

His real name is taylor zimmerman. He adopted this name when he hiked the Pacific Crest Trail and it seems to have stuck.

Just to clarify.....we were not planning it to be a surprise that his dad will be at the finish line but we have not been able to let him know. Remember he lost his cell phone and the trip to Banff was very last minute. So if someone lets him know that his dad will be at the finish line that would be great. Thanks.

Dave H did some math earlier and posted that Craig had 20 hrs downtime in Grants. It seems like Ollie had about 6 hrs of downtime with his light failure south of Silver City. My math, and I ain't too bright, would be that there was a 14 hr time difference in mechanical issues, and their finish times (Dave H's math - better than mine) were different by 14 hours. 14 - 14 = 0
Is that way cool or what? Two amazing riders! Congrats to Ollie and to Craig, and to all riders really.
Now, Serge, get it done. It's apples and oranges to compare one year to another, but you can arguably hold the title of fastest Fernie TD rider (Paul had to ride a faster route last year - although I know that wasn't his preference). If you can even be close to Mr. Attalla, you are biblical!

I thought it was one of the toughest sections of the race, if not the toughest. Very rough terrain with some loose rocks, lots of tough, steep rollers, no resupply except for that Coke machine that didn't work last year, very hot. It was also a decidely uphill profile for me (northbound) but it would still be tough the other way. Edit: added the word "steep"... |
