I am missing the pictures and news from David at the Como Depot.
I honored him with this shortcut on my desktop:  http://www.bikepacking.net/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=5117;sa=showPosts

But nothing in three days.  Is all well?
I would love to see the pictures he took since then (especially the morning of the 25th)

Is my math right that Ollie also broke the US only record by about 6 hours?

Congrats to Eszter!  Awesome job.  What I find interesting is that only one woman has technically scratched.  I know Tracy Burge had some problems early on, but she's still trucking.  Amazing job to all riders this year, but especially so on the women's side.  Katherine Wallace appears to have a long day ahead of her, but I think she'll finish today!  What an amazing race!

She has 270 miles to go, including the toughest part of the Gila, so even if she goes for it in one stretch, it's unlikely she'll finish today.

But even finishing sometime tomorrow would easily put her in (previous) record territory, 2nd woman (OK, behind Caroline, but she's in tandem category), and a very respectable Top 15 overall finish.

Yep, my mistake, I misread her info.  Either way, you're right, definitely an impressive run!

Hi Denis,

Thanks for your vote of confidence! You'll see I've been stuck in Steamboat for a few days ... I got to Bush Mountain Lodge at 21:30 on Saturday night with Elena and Marco (from Italy) where Matt and Scott fed us a great dinner. Unfortunately got an e-mail that my 90 year old mother had that day fallen and broken her hip.

I rolled out at 04:00 and got to Craig at 09:30 where I was able to get some calls in and an update. My father was going to be put into residential care since he has mild dementia and there was nobody to take care of him until I finished the race. I couldn't continue with a clear conscience so I hoofed it to Steamboat and got to Denver that night, and Toronto the next day.

It was a real drag as I was 100% physically and mentally, and keeping my 100+ miles a day up. I had broken the back of the race and there was no doubt in my mind that I would finish.

Matt has kindly left me as 'active'. My wife is flying in from New Zealand in just over a week if if the stars align I'm going to head back to Steamboat mid-July and finish the course. My wife and work are OK with this plan - just depends on my parent's situation.

If this unfortunately does not eventuate it's OK. This year the race didn't break me ... but I still want to finish the beast!

Chris, best wishes and health to your parents. Hope everything turns out alright.

Are your parents in Toronto, or do you have to fly all the way to NZ?

Calls overnight: Caroline and Kurt called in from Silver City. They’re trying to beat the heat! Caroline’s legs are feeling better. Kurt is very tired but okay. And Fixie Dave Nice called in from Helena. He’s doing okay despite having a bag suck into his front wheel and endoing! His left thumb isn’t fairing well but otherwise okay.

Bt has made an impressive push to the finish. Hats off to you! A quick look at the track and there is only 1 significant stop, north of silver city, since Cuba! Almost there!

Interesting that Greg Strauser decided to leave the route around Kremling and take the roads to Del Norte.  I've toured that on a road bike, and the GDMR is so much nicer.  Smooth cruising in Colorado too.  I'd rather do a GDMR tour in Colorado than make it to Mexico via those highways, but to each his own.  Hope he is enjoying the ride.

Any serious blue dot junkies might like to check out this one:

I'm following a friend in a 715 km paddling race on the Yukon. She is in one of the magenta two person kayaks.   The display is pretty entertaining, though no call-ins.

I'm not sure if he's the one who's going to run out of vacation time... There was a post earlier about someone having to go roads instead due to the amount of time left... couldn't find it when I went back looking for it.

So looks like both the singlespeed and tandem old records will survive, right?

Nice ride by the tandem.  A couple of hours of nap time during the early morning hours in Separ area, and now just a few miles from AW.

We talked with him along Hwy 112 yesterday evening....he is out of time and trying to just make the best of it in the short time he has.  Great spirits and just doing what he has to do!

Congrats to Kurt and Caroline. What an adventure it must be to ride as a couple like this!

(I'm not sure my marriage would survive beyond 5 miles, but that's a different story...  icon_biggrin )
