Matthew, thank you for the thoughtful, well-reasoned, and patient answer to my question. Too often, people just pump more emotion into discussing the rules, and your voice is a breath of fresh air. You really nailed the issue--and I fully and happily begrudgingly retract my objection over having someone deliver a Spot to Jay.
FYI, I am currently a 3X CTR rider (2X finisher), and not a TD rider. Family, work, and money make TD logistics far more challenging for me than just heading out the door in Colorado to ride the CTR. That said, I expect to ride the TD at some point in the future, even if it's ten years from now.
LTrain: Thinking about complicated issues, asking hard questions, and not being afraid to engage publicly in the sphere of ideas does not a troll make. Sitting on the sidelines and calling people names isn't terribly productive or positive. Your mean-spirited "troll" comment is just plain spiteful and short-sighted.

Jay hitting Lima just before closing was huge. It aloud him to leave early. With a good day he should make it to Flagg Ranch before closing. Which should put him in Pinedale before closing the next day.

Good point serge, that is huge. Getting those provisions before a store/restaurant closes is a huge psychological lift. I just rode Fitz-Barn with Jay and that kid can put away some food! He eats more than anyone I know on the bike.

Jay needs to get at least to Flagg Ranch today to keep up a decent average. LIMA to Flagg Ranch is around 168 miles (??). Tough section of rails to trails and then a lot of climbing before the descent into Flagg Ranch.

I'm thinking he has to get a fair bit further than that. This stretch isn't mountainous. Three guys did Lima to Flagg Ranch the year I raced (and they weren't the race leaders). The riding after Flagg Ranch is pretty easy, for about 30 miles. Maybe he'll make it to Buffalo Valley, get all romantic and bed down next to Tracy Lake?

Well the first part of the rails to trails section and the climbing into Wyoming did me in! But that is a mere mortal speaking here! But the day I did it the wind was pretty brutal.

He finished a few hours ago, so just under 21 days. Was picked up by JW and his wife and on the way back, so we should hear details from him soon.

I heard that he might have a tailwind through the basin to Rawlins.

Looks like JP is blazing. Thus far the weather seems pretty favorable (dry). Fun to watch. Thanks for the splits Tortoise.
