A question from someone who has never ridden, let alone raced the Divide.
What causes all the Achilles problems and what, if anything, can be done in terms of training to avoid them?
Thanks.
In my opinion, it is a mixture of individual disposition and extraordinary strain. You can not really train specifically to avoid it really (maybe a little bit like here http://www.eccentrictraining.com/3.html ). During TD you must find a mode which is bearable to you, like with other TD-problems which occur.

IMHO as a trainer of sportspeople and those of us that try to be... The Achilles and knee issues as well as a number of other problems are varying forms of overuse injuries. There may be underlying problems with the biomechanics of an individual and the bike setup, shoes etc but it is more likely that the cumulative effects of the on and off the bike pushes and little to no rest are quite a bit beyond what most most of us have trained for. I will be riding in 2014 and despite the knowledge and the time to train I will be unlikely to come close to training fully for the demands of an event like the TD:-)

Does look like Mike maybe slowly reeling Craig in. Still a long way to go.

The gap was as high as 40 miles earlier in the day, less than 30 now. It looks as Craig has been down for a few hours and Mike kept going to try to narrow things. Those boys deserve the rest. Although I wouldn't be surprised to see Craigs dot up and moving pretty quick.

By the sounds of it Mike's sorted his breathing out (found meds in Butte?). Hopefully Mike will be back on full throttle.

On my reckoning Craig had 50+ miles on Mike earlier on and he certainly has pulled a bit back. But the big mover was Jess Carlsson who was set free by his minder [Liam Crowley] from Helena. His sectional times through to Butte were faster than Craig and Mike. Think you can start to write out the prizemoney cheques Go the Aussies!

Looks like he is getting faster as the race unfolds. In the meantime Alex Harris is still going at 0300hrs and has almost caught Liam who has been stopped for about 3 hours. Some very interesting strategy going on here.

I think some of these guys have forgotten the component of , "Eat, Sleep, Ride". Given the amount of downtime, I think 'Eat' might be in danger of being skipped too. "Ride, Ride, Ride"

Zedmorgan --THANKS so much I sent the pic to Scotts wife that was awesome and very gracious of your boyfriend- I see they road through the night last night.
As for Scott he is always smiling - he is an awesome guy - we have ridden together for over 10 years, and wives and kids are friends as well. He is a fantastic guy to ride with so your boyfriend is in great company - He has a huge heart and more drive than most people I know. I see they are still together and that is good.
Thanks Again!!

Overnight: Kristen Arnold called in from Big Fork where she’s nursing her ankles. Joshua Weinfield called in from Horca. Ryan Sigsbey called in from Seely Lake. He crashed but is okay. Jesse Carlsson called in from Butte. He sat out a scary storm. Ed Turkaly called in from Seely Lake. Scott Thigpen called in from Seely Lake. He had a cold descent into Seely Lake. Craig Stappler called in from the Montana High Country Lodge. Rick Ashton called in from Ferndale. Dale Earixson called in from Columbia Falls. Dan Sweeney called in to say he’s OUT with a broken hub. Hal Russell called in from Columbia Falls with Edward Fogarty where they camped but slept lightly. And Max Morris called in from Lincoln. He’s battling ankle issues but he is okay. http://mtbcast.com/site2/category/td13/

Hey folks in the Silvercity area, my friend Wade Larson (northbound) has been camped out at Black Canyon upper campground area for two days now and I'm a bit worried. Had a text last night from an other friend that started with him that said he had a bit of a heat stroke issue the first day and was thinking of scratching but that's the last info. Maybe his spot id not working and he is making his way up the route, but just want to make sure. Lindsay Sheppard is about to pass him in a few miles, so if there is a way to contact her, he rides an orange Kona Unit with red Revelate bag and camp in a grey Tarptent. Any info would be great.
Did anyone find out what's happened to Wade Larson? I understand that the trackers do have an emergency help button so if assistance is needed the emergency services can be called. Mind you I was told this by my partner who did the TD in 2011 so maybe this was his way of reassuring me..... For all of you concerned about bear encounters - the comment at the end sums it up [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIJGb8mLyOE#]Bear gets right next to a guy on tree]

Mike Komp called in from Whitefish. He’s waiting on a wheel and nursing some ankle pain. Peter Kraft called in from Ferndale. Tony Litson called in to say he’s OUT! Eric Foster called in from Lincoln. He got his achilles taped up and is ready to move on to Butte! And Lindsay Shepard called in to say she’s OUT! http://mtbcast.com/site2/category/td13/

Ovando Montana AM Update: The following photos were taken last night by guests staying in Ovando and enjoying the company of several cyclists that spent the night. I do not know who they are but I think they enjoyed themselves and were out of here by first light. Also included is a photo of Ian McNab of the UK who also spent the night and left around 0830 hrs after a few hours of rest.

Mario - glad you heard from Wade. I couldn't see anything amiss in his shared page. Is he still riding, or has he scratched?
Max has been riding so close to Eszter's record pace it is cracking us up here at TL HQ (attached shot from right now). Look out Max!
Eric Foster had a slow morning or a long night in Lincoln. Max's comment about the young bucks going out too fast seems to be playing out...
