Ovando Montana final update for June 19:  Dennis Loewen - CA zoomed thru without a photo op as did Hal Russell - MO, Adam Kiem - Australia and Ed Fogarty - VA who are at a restaurant outside town fueling up.  Karlos Bernart - FL, Dale Earixson - CO, Eric Sime - WI, Martin Ortman - Germany and his friend just coming along for the fun of it, Elias Dechent - Germany have all come through and left, with the exception of Eric who is spending the night and has completed a hot shower.  Til tomorrow!

It seems remarkable that is this most American of bike races, the leading six places are filled by men from the old British Empire. Indeed, without wishing to offend Yankee sensibilities, it seems certain at this early stage that a loyal subject of Queen Elizabeth II will win the race. It looks as though Sara Dallman will salvage some American pride in the women's race but can we expect the flower of American men's cycling to gird its loins and mount a serious attempt to claim back the Rockies next year?

It may be a road to redemption for the Texan with the black socks [sorry sox!]

A pic of Mike Hall near Warm Springs Ashton ID. I came here to Valley View RV park to fly fish and saw a post by Dixie Dave on my FB account and thought hell I'm camping practically on the GD and sure enough the leaders were 3 miles down the road

Fixie Dave sheesh I'm all thumbs on this Android. Oh and BTW  Hall posts up on blue dot every 5 mins on Android 4.0.3 on my Galaxy S 2 and cellphone coverage is scarce everywhere these folks ride except near.major roads. Mike seemed happy to have someone to chat briefl

I'm thinking that is a tongue in cheek comment, but somehow I don't think this race is Lance's style.  icon_biggrin

I gotta say, I love the call ins on MTBcast. I'm particularly following Scott Thigpen and Drew Mcintosh, and it's always great to hear updates from those guys. C$ is really funny. They're a great compliment to the blue dots. Really put a story to the GPS. I can't wait to ride this race.

Thanks! I collect the funny calls and put them together for a montage each year, typically in the Fall.

If anyone has seen Forest Baker in the last few hours, please give a holler. He's probably just having Spot issues, but it'd be nice to know for sure.

Marco Nicoletti's Spot has been silent for almost 7 hours.

It looks like Hall is closing the gap to Stappler.

Matthew Liggett called in from Helena. He’s taking some time off to nurse his knee. Mike Hall called in from Colter Bay. He’s feeling better and reports the nearby road construction doesn’t require you to use the pilot car. Richard Costello called in from Lincoln. He recaps his ride. Scott Thigpen called in from Helena, MT being from Helena, AL. Eric Foster called in from Butte where he got some repairs done at The Outdoorsman. And Thomas Batty called in from Helena.

...Who knows...there's probably utility in checking in such that you know...you're fired so you might as well keep riding...
Sorry, couldn't help but distill your quote.

Eventually, when sat messengers become two-way texters, all challengers could quickly (and democratically) receive their daily trackleaders stats (via SPOT) while still riding. If it means equal access to info and less gadget fussing, I'm not against it. Maybe riders are only allowed to request their stats twice, or thrice in a 24hr period. Like burning an alotted time-out in the big game.

Scott Thigpens call in from Helena mentioned riding through hail. That's got to be painful

When I was in college I played on the hockey team and we used to have, umm, get togethers with the rugby team.  So one time it started hailing HARD and the next thing I knew the there was a pile of clothes on the floor and the whole rugby team was out in the street doing sprints in the hail, naked.  As in no undies.  The hockey team stayed inside, by the keg, with the girls, watching in awe.

It looked painful.

Mike Hall is really traveling with the least amount of gear possible it looks like. Such a minimal load compared to some of the other riders pictures we've seen this year.

Ok, so I just realized that Drew McIntosh is on a fixie with no brakes. Have any other fixie finishers done the td without brakes? Particularly Dave nice.

Same approach to his record breaking around the world record.
It certainly shows on that last climb where he has closed the gap to Craig to within 70 minutes.
