I hope those fellows remembered Crazy Larry's advice in Banff drawn from 30yrs experience of dealing with wild animals. Confront a bear and retreat from a mountain lion........or was it the other way round....?   He didn't mention cows.

Does anybody have an idea how far north the No-Bo will be able to go?  It doesn't sound promising to make it all the way to banff.  But in a week who knows?  Maybe.

So, where is the halfway mark? The discrepancy between trackleaders and cue sheet mileage has me confused. Thanks!

Basic truth is we don't know for sure about Canadian portion at present.  Lots of helis doing recon out of Fernie (and Canmore), but they are concerned with more serious issues than the GDMBR route.

Been told that Elk Lakes FSR has washed out in multiple places, Corbin road has multiple washouts, road through Flathead Pass area is ripped out.  Also heard road from Canmore to Whiteman's Pass (near Goat Creek TH) is washed out in 1 or more locations.  People really should google some of the pics and video to get an idea of what has happened.

So, to be clear it is early days so there are lots of rumours, but not many 100% facts yet.  But, I can believe all of this.  This event saw stream flows that are the largest ever recorded by a large margin, and there have been some 1 in 200 year events in last several years.  THIS WAS HUGE AND OVER A HUGE AREA!!!

FYI - suezim

We too are fans of Cjell but currently reiterate what KootenayB has just posted.
The Goat Creek trail is not just a little damaged it is all but destroyed, all three bridges are gone. the creek has re-routed itself in several places. Cjelll will be days away and we will keep you and all NOBO's posted on reroutes.

The legacy trail between Banff and Canmore is mostly intact, have yet to hear of the road status from above the Nordic center to Whiteman pass(goat creek trail head). This will most likely be the reroute option if riders can get through the Flathead and Kananaskis.

Some reshuffling of the top 10: Markley A and Leo P with a LONG rest, by TD standards, of ~14 hours last night, and Forest B with big move up and might catch Liam C in a day or two if he can keep it up.  Presumably Brian P is keeping pace with Forest.  Looking at the flow chart, it's impressive how steady and consistent Jesse C in 3rd has been over 8 days - truly amazing metronomic flow chart.

You presume well.   icon_biggrin

Kucebags- thanks for the info.  I do not know where any of those trails are so it hard for me to grasp the meaning for cjell's ride.  We, his parents, are wondering what to do.  If he can't finish we will cancel our plans and visit banff some other time.  But we really want to be at the finish if he can get there.  Such a dilemma!

Hi Sue,
If no other route is open from the U.S. border to Banff, Cjell can bike the highways.  Go to Mapquest and type in directions from Eureka, Montana to Banff, Alberta.  You will see a route that includes Highway 95 to Radium Hot Springs, Highway 93 to Castle Mountain, and then east on Highway 1 to Banff.  This detour is 237 miles.  If you are flying into the Calgary airport there may be an emergency bus shuttle from Canmore and Banff to the Calgary airport (http://globalnews.ca/news/658584/flooding-washes-out-trans-canada-highway-banff-canmore-declare-states-of-emergencies/).  This is all a bit unclear at the moment about whether the bus will also take passengers west to Banff from the airport.

You can drive from Calgary to Banff by going north on Highway 2 to Red Deer, west on Highway 11, South on Highway 93, and then east on Highway 1.  This is an all day trip (337 miles) but rather scenic.

Best of luck on making this work.  I know he would love seeing you at the finish.  I was so surprised and pleased when he hung around Banff last year just to see me in.

Larry Hipskind called in from Ovando. He got his Spot reset with some help from a Spot rep. Thomas Batty called in to say he is OUT due to sore knees. Fred Arden called in from Lima. Jesse Carlsson called in from Steamboat Springs. And Richard Costello called in from the Montana High Country Lodge.

Suze - those trails are some of the last ones coming into Banff, ie. what the south bounders started on.  As above, usually you can drive in, but please read prior posts on page 34 or 33 about current status.  You can't currently drive to Banff from Calgary - transcanada highway wrecked by Canmore.  Too much to repeat here, but for the sake of your planned rendevous, you need to read up on what the current highway and other closures are using the relevant government pages.

Are you fixing him up a hot meal and a bath?  Seems like emailing a restaurant that you'll "be there" at a certain time is over the line.  Whatever.  I don't even care anymore.

The time is my supposition, not his. I am also a Bed and Breakfast.

I have many riders calling in advance, why would that be an issue?

Stamstad and Curiak phoned from pay phones along the trail to inquire about the status of a motel room or services ahead on the route. This activity is not prohibited provided it's done ON the race clock. The intro of smart phones has enabled this to be done by email, but it still takes time out of racing to do. I agree it almost seems unfair in comparison to someone who is not carrying a phone at all, but these are choices riders must make. Payphones don't exist anymore, so perpetuating the GDR mobile phone ban wouldn't exactly be fair either. Hall is carrying that extra weight, and it's a distraction too. Please discuss. The important thing is that a place like Como Depot commits to treating everyone equally, not simply Hall because he's the race leader.

Yeah - I'm gonna delete that post.  Not trying to start a fight.  If it's legal, then he SHOULD do it.  They probably want the business and would like to know if someone is showing up late.

don't censor yourself. I understand how you feel. I never carried a phone. But I never wanted to tell anyone they couldn't. There's plenty of services on the route to do fine with or without. TD is no wilderness race.

I tend to have more sympathy with the people at the back. I do not think he has a phone. He said he could not find a pay phone?

Smart phones are simply a reflection of the times we live in regarding technology just like the superior soft bikepacking bags, Cuben Fiber, better bikes, components, 29'er wheels, etc.  If one chooses to take a bivy or a tent, is one at an unfair advantage or is it a choice of best kit for the individual.  In general, one of those takes a bit more time to manipulate than the other but again, it's a rider's choice.  Can't a phone be classified as a 'tool' of someone's kit?  Some riders don't take water filtration and some do and so on.  If it ain't against the rules, it shouldn't be an issue.

Thank you everyone who gave me feed back.
Is it within the rules for me to give any of this info to cjell?  Or does he have to figure it out himself.  I do plan to tell him how bad conditions are in the banff area.  Hopefully that is ok.

Chip - cjell told me how much he appreciated seeing you before the Arizona race and the advice you gave him.

I see he is almost half way.  Way to go cjell!!!

Be a good night for some moonlight riding if you have smooth terrain ahead. The super moon has risen!
