Could be a blessing in disguise - there's still a long way to go.
Looks as though all the top ten are up and running right now.
Given the amount of trail being covered in the dark, it looks as though a really good (hub dynamo-powered?) lighting setup is going to become standard kit for any future serious contenders.
... and for the standard kit: don't forget to bring good weather and snow conditions ... :-) |

That is just nuts!
CS is killing it and definitely well ahead of record pace, but it looks like JP's arrival times in both Lincoln and Butte are inaccurate on the chart - he has a point on his page showing him in Lincoln 2:17 from the start: http://trackleaders.com/tourdividei.php?name=Jay_PetervaryDidn't JP lose his spot along the way? My guess is that caused some problems in the Lincoln and Butte split times? |

Something does seem a bit off there - CS may be building lead but don't think it jumped up that much so quickly!
Stunning pace by CS though! Know he has the real goods, but even his most ardent supporters must be worrying a bit about the huge daily mileage. But then again, this is Craig we're watching. Amazing engine, and super giving helpful guy in all respects. Deserves a good ride this year!

As a friend of his, I share the same concerns on pace sustainability. But... he knows what he's getting into, and he's not a "technology carrier" - not even a phone (he's done what is now considered old school - remembered phone numbers that are important on this trip), so he's now doing a pace that is set solely by his free will. He obviously does mental math on distances, times, and knows the route intricately, but he's not motivated by other blue dots. Usually when one self paces, they do so truly at a pace their body feels comfortable with. Or so I hope anyway! |

Question.. does track leaders somehow include the South to North Riders in the "standings" trying to figure out when I look at race pace and rider standings if those guys are calculated somehow?
Any input would be great!

Amen to that bikingbakke! Self pacing and going "organic" seems like the best way to go - esp. if you want to get the most personal enjoyment out of the ride!
Love the approach of keeping it simple and just pedal dammit!
And thanks Angler for your precise Ovando updates! Drove through your town last month, seems like a neat little place!

My guess is that caused some problems in the Lincoln and Butte split times? Yep, JP lost his SPOT for a significant stretch of his record run. I believe we didn't get him a replacement until Lima. However, we do have a few points for him in the history, so it's possible myself or Matthew fabricated a few. We're checking with him to see if he has any splits we can drop in. Until then, the JP blue flag is going to get passed and we'll see how it looks after Lima. No doubt, Craig is well ahead of record pace and so far showing no signs of slowing down. |

No, northbound riders aren't factored in. Northbound and southbound are two separate races, run concurrently. I suppose it would be possible to rank folks according to total miles covered, which would be an interesting number, but not really too meaningful as far as racing goes. Though Mr. Money might disagree with me there. We'll see where the 'golden spike' hits this year! |

Overnight: Ed Turkaly called in from Whitefish. He did indeed have a broken crank and he got it repaired. Liam Crowley called in from Seely Lake. Matthew Liggett called in from Whitefish. Thomas Batty called in from Whitefish. Hal Russell called in from Eureka. He and Ed Fogarty had to backtrack to make a correction. Billy Rice called in from Banff. Agree, but there are some miscalculations in the statistics of the individual northbound riders, e.g. their Route average speed, Route distance per day, Moving Average speed. The miscalculations is because the Distance-ahead instead of the Distance-done is taken as the basis for the calculations. |

Ovando Update: Thomas Lane of Austin Tx has arrived.
Mr. Lane is doing pretty damn good for 54yrs of age. There's also 3 young 20-somethings in the top 20. Maybe this is the year that some young guns set some fast times, as TDR has typically been the domain of older gen. Also noticing that the Triple Crown posse has split up and Forest Baker has move WAY up in the field, while some of the earlier front runners are dropping back a few spots. And, my favorite "every year a few miss this turn" spot is up near Stemple Pass, just South of Lincoln. This year, the sneaky turn has claimed 2 Aussies as victims. J Carlson and L Crowley are currently heading up to Stemple Pass proper. Oops! I wonder what's Aussie-speak for "dude, I think we missed a turn"? Even good weather seems to hide the turn to go up S Fk Poorman Ck. I'm sure it'll only set them back a few minutes (hopefully). |

That's a typical refuel spot. There are 4 spot dots hovering there this morning, and plenty of riders have been there already for breakfast. Been watching some riders opting for heading north on 83 for less than a mile to the Hungry Bear Steak House rather than 1/2 mile detour to Holland Lake Lodge. Some riders bypassing both options altogether. Strategy, strategy, ... |
