Scott Thigpen called in from Helena with a recommendation for Louieā€™s Casa Diego! Louis has a wall for the TD racers to sign! Nick Legan called in from The Hanging Five in Butte! Craig Stappler called in to say that Brooks Lake Rd is dry. Dave Rooney called in to say he is OUT due to knee issues.

Oh no! looks like Mike Hall may have missed the brooks lake rd. hopefully just a spot glitch
He did miss it well spotted.
Looks as though Mike has spotted it as well. (15 minute detour)

I still have nightmares about missing that turn last year.I noticed it about 4 miles down. It could easily go unnoticed if a rider misses it because the route rejoins it.

The lead is down to around 11 miles! Looking at Mike's rig, it appears no aero bars. Interesting.

Hi mtlane,
Can I ask a favor? If you are able to contact Tom, could you also ask him if he's seen Forest Baker? (no contact via spot or phone for ~20 hours). Crossing fingers that they both arrive in Lima sometime soon... Thank you!

Greetings everyone! Great to see everyone so engaged here stalking, predicting and chatting about the riders as well as the event. Some very generic comments but others also very interesting and surprising.

First off, I say very nice start to an almost half-way point of the event. I give the lead riders big cheers with the beer in my hand to very strong committed riding. That is awesome and motivating! Keeping the good style as well, certainly appreciate craigs no phone run and will assume mike is not looking at a blue dot app either...

I can appreciate the words of Mathew in regards to trying to keep to the original intent and feel of how this grand depart was built and formed; ie technology. Matt and I are great friends and value this event equally but he is still the more reasonable one - still giving in to make more rules and adjust to technology...Wink Humans are always looking for another way or an additional thing and this is an event to let that all go - live by your senses.

To a few comments -

the game is not over till its over.

to areo bar or not to aero bar, this is where it begins...

be concerned but trust in your favorite rider, they are fine...hopefully prepared...

I stayed away this morning from the leaders on route since its my backyard but on Saturday we are doing a group ride of Around the Block (150 mile ride that incorporates Flagg Ranch Rd) that will run into many mid pack riders along Flagg Ranch Rd.

Should be a fun evening for the leaders tonight depending on what they do, it will be below freezing up there for sure...its actually motivational to not sleep when it is like that...

Till next time...

-JayP

Pretty sure Mike Hall needs some sleep somewhere in there. Too easy to make mistakes when sleep deprived.

Mike Hall is planning on riding his bike from the finish to Phoenix for his plane ride home.  I work at Pivot (one of his sponsors) and we are based in PHX.  I will be out of town or I would go get him!  If anyone out there plans on being at the finish and could give him a ride to Phoenix PLEASE let me know so i can hook him up!!  He flies out on the 4th or 5th, he couldn't remember last time we emailed...  Thanks everyone!!  lisa@pivotcycles.com

When I was in college I played on the hockey team and we used to have, umm, get togethers with the rugby team.  So one time it started hailing HARD and the next thing I knew the there was a pile of clothes on the floor and the whole rugby team was out in the street doing sprints in the hail, naked.  As in no undies.

Looks like Mike might have pulled over for the night around 10:30pm, after an incredible 200+ miles day.  Starting about 40 miles back he closed to within 6 miles of the leader.  Stappler continues to ride into the night.

Drop the bike off, leave Spot with bike, go eat and take a short nap by the river ... maybe sleep for 6 hours or so and hit the LONG climb out of Salida on an SS fresh first thing.

Marco Nicoletti's Spot has been silent for almost 7 hours.

Forest just called from Lima. He's pretty sure that Marco's in front of him, as he hasn't seen him all day.

Several riders came down the Pioneer Mountain Scenic Byway today and stopped at the lodge to fuel up.  The weather man was calling for rain this afternoon and snow this evening so this group should make it through the Medicine Lodge / Sheep Creek area on their way to Lima before it gets muddy.

The weather man was correct...rain this afternoon and snow up on the Pioneer Mountain Scenic Byway.  Tom Lane pushed through trying to make it closer to Lima this evening, sure he got soaked.  Large group of TD riders staying tonight...Ethan Stewart, Hugh Harvey, Robin Schwartz, Walter Brumniach, Max Morris and Ethan Deutsch.  Max took shelter under a tarp during the rain trying to put more cloths on and repair his shifter...looks like he'll be single speeding for a while.  Ethan just arrived very wet and cold, he said he rode through several inches of snow up on the byway before dropping down to the lodge this evening.

HUGE thanks for the mention of my brother (Hugh Harvey) in amongst the crowd over-nighting at the Lodge tonight. Those of us stalking from the antipodes truly appreciate that he is out of the rain/hail/yuck.  I hope he (and all the other riders) have/had a great evening and a good nights sleep.  thumbsup
