Looks like Mike Hall is pulling away. Stapplers been stopped for 3.5 hours now.

THat just means that Craig's spot hasn't updated for 3.5 hours. He could be riding right next to Mike and just has bad batteries in his spot. His updates have been patchy today so I suspect his batteries are getting tired and need replacing. The 4 am wake up call will reveal all!

Looks like Mike is riding through the night to get to Rawlins by the look of it.  65 mile lead and counting.   He will have to stop sometime, continues to be interesting.

It's my first time following the Tour Divide and I have to say the coverage is great. It's thrilling to see Mike Hall pull away in the dark.

My friend is Peter Maindonald, a rookie. He called in for the first time yesterday. He sounds as happy as a pig in poo!

I am very impressed with the amount of information available.
Some of the most telling stats are the moving average speed and stopped time.

Mike has a moving average speed of 13.0mph with a stopped time of 1day 23hrs 41mins (Mike is stopping longer and moving faster)
Craig has a moving average speed of 12.1mph with a stopped time of 1day 16hrs 19mins
Jesse has a moving average speed of 10.9mph with a stopped time of 1day 15hrs 04 mins (Jesse is stopping less and moving slower)

It will be interesting to see how Mike performs tomorrow and what time he starts after his monster stage today. This could be the deciding factor of the race, unless there are any major navigation, mechanical or accidents.

Looks like Mike finally stopped near the main road junction - just before the drag up the main road towards Rawlins. Craig's been stopped for around 6.5 hours now or is moving in SPOT off stealth mode.

Wow! Mike Hall's moving again already - must have been less than a 3 hour rest. The next 24 hours are going to be very interesting - hope he can keep going!

I was hoping that was the case but he just started moving 8 minutes ago. Now Mikes resting so it will be interesting to see if he starts moving before Craig reaches him.

edit - I guess Mikes on the move! That answers that question!

Looks like 3 hrs (Mike) vs. 8 hrs (Craig) last night, with a resulting 5 hr 80 mile gap this morning (both moving again).

So we can assume that Craig is pretty well rested, and Mike may be struggling to stay awake in the saddle before too long. Should be a fascinating day ahead...

I just googled Mike Hall and read some amazing stuff about his record-breaking ride around the world.
Check it out.  So impressive.  200 miles a day for 3 months. The guy has muscle. And he's hypercompetitive.
I'm predicting he leaves Craig behind and doesn't look back.

FYI, re. Canadian conditions

thefreepress.ca

The Elk River has crested over the dike south of the Elk River Bridge on the Fording River Highway and is flooding along the east side of Highway 43. The Elk River Forest Service Road north of Elkford has also been washed out.

Sparwood, Elkford, and Canmore declared states of emergency, as well as most of SW Alberta.  Floods in range of historic 1995 event in the region.  It's a monthly rainfall per day for 2 days kinda deal.

Yeah Mike is pretty amazing. Last year he completely smashed the record for cycling around the world. (UNSUPPORTED)
He is more than capable of smashing the Tour Divide record and his twitter profile indicates that he has unfinished business with this race.
If his mind and body holds up he should really start pulling away as he has demonstrated that he has the endurance for this type of event.

The problem is riding on interstate is illegal.

Riding on the Interstate in Montana is not illegal. We do it all the time. In Wyoming it is illegal.

Just ran into Drew McIntosh on my ride into work in Helena. He seemed in good spirits. Looks like we will have some nicer weather in our area for today.

So I wasn't the only one that noticed that... at least he gets to enjoy a long downhill now!

Riding on the Interstate in Montana is not illegal. We do it all the time. In Wyoming it is illegal.

If you are heading east out of Laramie, Wy it is legal to ride RT 80 for about 4-5 miles as it is the only paved road...just wanted to make a note of that.

The race coverage here is great....thanks!

Billy Rice called in from the intersection of 83 and 561 last night. Rich Otterstrom called in from Butte. He has struggled but is feeling better. Billy Rice called in from below Richmond Peak. Fred Arden called in from near Butte. Steve Martine called in from Butte. And Thomas Batty called in from outside Butte.
