Odd...my TL map shows the 30day flag running about 25-30 miles ahead of the 25 day flag right now, even after a refresh.
edit: I see now that the 25 day flag hasn't updated for a couple days.

He has a phone but as it has a UK Sim it is only used for dire emergencies or when he has access to wi fi.
Mike mentioned how strong a rider Craig was and how difficult it was to make the break. Also that he nearly quit 3 days in, having breathing issues, rested up overnight and it went away.
Tomorrow he is looking to make Del Norte. Craig seems to have pulled off route?

Please discuss. First: If calling ahead once the clock has started is currently allowed, than obviously it's fine and no sanctions should be considered. But going forward, I think that people need to decide what these races should look like. As more outside influences enter the scene, it's no longer going to be the same challenge. If people call ahead for meals, check each other's locations with bluedot.mobi, chat with team managers about weather & strategy, etc. then the ideals of self-reliance and self-sufficiency will be lost. Much of the "self-support" of self-supported ultra racing will be eliminated. It'll just be bike racing, without the same degree of adventure. Not that there's anything wrong with bike racing. There are lots great supported races out there. Self-supported racing isn't inherently better. But it is different. And I'm bummed that the difference is becoming narrower--not wider. There should be room enough for both types of racing. If I could wave a magic wand, I'd wish for self-supported ultra racing to stay as self-supported as is reasonably possible. Calling ahead for someone to arrange services just doesn't seem very self-reliant. Nor does using bluedot to track a competitor that you can't see with your own eyes. I already apply a more restrictive set of rules to the way that I race the CTR. It works for me, and for many others who similarly attempt to "Do. It. Themselves." Race organizers can embrace or reject whatever approaches they choose, but perhaps racers ultimately have to decide for themselves what self-supported racing really means. |

There is a way. It's called "unsupported." People have hiked the CT this way; no reason it can't be biked without any resupply or outside intervention. Honestly, I think it would be an awesome challenge. Not one I'd be ready for any time soon, of course. But maybe a shorter route, someday (and probably hiking.) :-) |

Toby... as always, interesting points. I appreciate your rather 'black and white' mentality in an otherwise massively grayed world. I am curious as to your thoughts regarding an establishment (e.g. a lodge/restaurant/bike shop) tracking the blue dots and staying open a bit later because they 'spot' someone coming into town after closing time without the knowledge of the racer.

Mike did not know how far behind Craig was, he could have found out in Breck as he had wi fi access.
5 years ago it was very common for cyclists to ask to borrow my laptop, now it never happens. There may be some out there without them but I am sure they are a small minority.
I keep a random eye on who is due in. As I live on the premises I do not stay late or open early etc. I have had heard of some bike shops being very accommodating. Steamboat and Salida get a regular mention.
The racers generally do not book, certainly those at the front, they want to get as far as they can. The Tourists and those at the back are more likely to do so as they will stop mid afternoon and not be worried about a few extra hours cycling opportunity.
I do not think I have ever had a Rider book for the Restaurant, I get calls asking when we are open, but I doubt many are from Cyclists.

Interesting times this morning .........
Liam C still out there at 3.12am .... must have a hot date in Rawlins! Liam made a late start yesterday at 10.00am but seems to be revitalised by the extra rest and maybe he's got his achilles sorted. No movement from Alex Harris [well his SpoT] and I think he will be in the mix somewhere with James and Liam.
Jesse C has found it too hot in Steamboat Springs, he's on his way at 1.30am, maybe with some intent to take some time out of Craig. He has sounded pretty relaxed in the MTB pod casts in contrast to Craig who was beating himself up about a bad call he made a few nights ago.

Great battle here now with Forest in the mix. Liam posted a message in Atlantic City saying he felt much better - looks like he's taking advantage of the cool night for the drag into Rawlins. Hope Alex gets new batteries soon so we can get a better overall picture. IMO - this middle bunch is the most exciting with it's mix of experience v determination (not taking anything from the super-human achievements of the top 3, or the humbling performance of everyone else). |

As Vistead reported .... you need to go back to Craig's recent MTB Cast [maybe from Steamboat Springs]. To my mind he sounded pretty negative about his decision making ......and the outcome, which was Mike Hall gapping him. Still time to regroup but he's got to be positive and look at where he can recover the lost ground... if he starts to look back at what Jess is up to he's done for! He's come second before so at some stage he's going to have to call the shots. |

In some ways the TD looks like the old Tour de France, from what I've read in the history books.
In the 'olden' days, the tour riders used to have to sort out their own hotels. I think Eddy Merckx once won a bull as a stage prize; a little difficult to carry for the rest of the tour!
As far as phones go, it would seem odd to me to chastise someone for using a mobile while insisting they use satellite tracking. The world changes every year. If its not a crushing advantage and not so expensive as to be out of the range of ordinary folk, rock with it.

Mike just left, thinking Del Norte may not be achievable. Needs a new chain so will pick one up in Salida. He did say he would like Craig to catch up a bit and push him!
The really old TdF had some interesting activities, hopefully we will never see some of those on the TourDivide.
