So if roads/areas are closed you just figure it out on your own? I am just curious about this as the fires in Colorado and NM make me nervous. I see Santa Fe National Forest where Mike Hall is approaching is closed due to fire prevention but what I don't understand is a) how are the racers notified or aren't they? b) do you just decide on your own route or is their some guidance?

If there is an "official" reroute, Joe will usually post it on the outgoing message on the MTBCAST line and it will probably be posted here. Otherwise, the racer is supposed to choose the shortest practical detour.

So, what happens if the rider decides to stay on the route even though it's closed, i.e. if he/she gets an exemption to ride through after contacting the USFS or if he doesn't even know about the closing beforehand? Not clear on this one:(

Too bad about the Gila closure, on top of this one.
From the map available via Gila NF website, the Aldo Leopold Wilderness closure is just to the East of the route. I don't see any other Gila closures. The Santa Fe NF closure over Polvedera Mesa between Abiquiu and Cuba is a bummer. I don't know how likely obtaining a special use permit is.

This is the ACA suggested reroute around the Silver Fire closure for cyclists traveling the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route: FR 150 was closed June 23 due to the Silver Fire. It's closed from just south of the Beaverhead Work Center (mile 99.1) to Hwy. 35 (mile 146.2). There's lots of fire vehicles on the road and the fire, which is east of the road, is heading north and west. So, that's why it was closed. It'll be closed anywhere from 7 -14 days. The easiest detour would be to take Hwy 12 west (mile 39.0), then south on US 180 to Silver City. This is the same detour that was used last year. For information: http://www.fs.usda.gov/gilaAgain, this is a suggested detour. thanks, - casey

Yeah, the incident report indicated that FR 150 is included in the Silver Fire closure: "Starting at the intersection of Forest Road 150 and State Hwy 35 (T15S, R12W, sec. 23) and proceeding north along and including Forest Road 150 to Forest Road 4069G (T11S, R12W, sec34)" http://www.inciweb.org/incident/article/3433/18760/

There seems to be a number of more "mature" riders interested in the TD, (myself included). Perhaps there could be a separate start a week or so after The Grand Depart for the more mature crowd, - "The Grand Defart"
I'm guessing this post is mostly just for a joke - and I agree - fronting up as a 47 year old next year I will be in the Grand DeFart territory... However, I think the spirit of the event would be lost if we separate into groupings and particularly if we started on different days. The Grand Depart is IMHO a key element of this event and one I look forward to participating in. I could ride an ITT anytime. It is the comparison to others starting at the same time that I for one will relish - whatever the divide throws at me and whatever time I finish (or not finish) in! The experiences of those in the later half of this years riders will be dramatically different to those further up the field. I will set my objectives and regardless of finish times I will know if I worked or shirked the plan! Although in the older (less young?) crowd I am training for a top 10 finish. Unfortunately this was based on last years top 10 and looked sketchy then let alone now... Oh well - more training and less posting:-)

A maximum fine of $5,000. Might be worth it for a record after that much work!

It does seem that Mike is dithering; got to the closure sign and went back to town to ask locals...or did he turn off the spot so he could travel incognito? Too bad he didn't arrive in the dark. I think the chances of getting through the Jemez (Santa Fe Nat'l Forest) after hours are good. Not so sure about the Gila, lots of FS traffic below Beaverhead I would guess.

James Olsen is tracking again and the race for 3rd between him and Alex Harris is going to be great to watch. Just 5 miles between them at the moment and I don't think they've been more than 10 miles apart for the past 48 hours! As a Saffa, you know which horse I'm backing Beware Liam! - knowing my brother, he's never going to give up chasing down AH and JO. I'm incredibly proud of what he has achieved here - as a real rookie, he's still up there holding his own with the best. And it looks like he's had a great day today! Go Liam!!!

Daniel Roberts called in from off-route in Ashton, ID where he’s resting his left knee. He’s not out but is taking a day to recoup. Chris Arndt called in from Rawlins. He got hammered by winds in the basin and ran out of water and food. Scott Thigpen called in from Cora. He got to The Place Cafe but it was close. While on the phone the owner showed up and made them burgers! And Mike Hall called in from Abiquiu twice. He’s been informed that the National Forest is on complete closure there and he’s been told to take Hwy 96.http://mtbcast.com/site2/category/td13/

Hopefully he will pop in, I have found my Camera, well one of them, the other is still a mystery.

Brutal. Looks like Mike Hall wasn't able to sweet-talk the Forest folks into getting a hall pass.
Let's all pause for a moment of silence.
Everything has to be picture perfect to set a high mark on this route.

So...Mike Hall is taking Rt 96 to Cuba to get around the closure. What does this mean for him and for the racers out there (from a completely amateur blue spot watcher!)....is it more distance, what about the terrain and the resupply points? And what about the Tour Divide record? Please fill in my gaps in knowledge!!!! Thanks in advance!

No record with that much of a re-route, unfortunately.
