Looks like Jesse is gonna beat the old record. FYI, the two detours are a good bit easier than what they bypass, so not exactly beating the record. Close, though.

SUPERSTAR! And considering his specialty event is less than 60 seconds (BMX) all the more impressive. Given the lightning episode he might be finishing the race with a different skin pigment to the one he started in Banff with...
Fantastic ride Jesse, not leaving anything in the tank cruising in now at +25kph and @ 104F..... should improve the tan lines!

Yea!!!!!! Cjell monee finished his race. He did a terrific job and on a one speed! We, his parents, could not be prouder. He called at the finish line and sounded elated. I know he was disappointed not to be able to ride all the way to Banff but even so he was pleased with his ride. By my calculations he would have had an excellent finish place. Can't wait to see him and celebrate back in Minnesota.
I want you all to know what a great person he is and how lucky we are to have him as a son. He certainly has opened our lives to a new world with the most interesting, wonderful people. Congrats to all riders. It is a huge accomplishment to ride the divide.

What would a German Michelin be?. I do not want to upset the French.
Not really having a domestic equivalent, maybe VARTA would be close. However, if you wanna rank "Divide Cuisine" and use German rubber for that, maybe "Continental" would be a good pick. Apparently, Mike Hall used literally the same tire twice: quote @Normally_Human: "This front tyre has done the race twice now. Think it's time to retire it, maybe make a new belt." https://twitter.com/Normally_Human/status/351127313863294976/photo/1pic.twitter.com/PDXrD5icxU

Peter arrived Friday afternoon not feeling good, he slept for a very long time, good to hear he is going well. Eric and Jeff had a late dinner and headed out to get to Hatsel by 11pm. They have to go down the Elkhorn a route shared by my Head Waitress....

Hi friends, what are the details of the reroutes in NM?
Had a delightful (if unplanned and early) stay at the Como Depot last night. Thanks David!

Why does the race take the alternate sections of the GDMBR? For example why not the "official" unpaved roads between Cuba and Grants through the Rio Puerco Valley and the flanks of MT. Taylor or the unpaved section of the El Malpais NM.

Pretty sure that Dejay Birtch ran that section in 2011 in the Tour Divide in New Mexico, due to fires, on his single speed?

Is there a doctor amongst the racers staying in Rawlins tonight? My buddy is feeling sick and the hospital is not open until Monday. We are staying in LaBella Motel on Pruce Street / 21st Street room 2. Any help would be great. Thanks! Martin.ortmann'at'web.de

One more time: Nobody beat the GDMBR course record from the grand depart. They detoured in two significant locations. Their times cannot be compared. Especially Cjell's, as he was forced to stop at the Roosville border 250mi shy of Banff.

Why does the race take the alternate sections of the GDMBR? For example why not the "official" unpaved roads between Cuba and Grants through the Rio Puerco Valley and the flanks of MT. Taylor or the unpaved section of the El Malpais NM.
Stamstad, who set the benchmark originally (1999), elected not to run the main route along Rio Puerco so as not to force record pursuers to take this potentially dangerous stretch if monsoons were going full bore. There are at least two arroyo X-ings one cannot bridge if they are flowing. It was a judgement call that to this point has been honored by GDR and TD. To reinforce that precedent, Mt Taylor gets closed all the time for fire danger, only confounding the segment's 'run-ability'. As for the El Malpais main route section that follows (from Grants to the Pie Town Rd) it's first part, Zuni Canyon also often gets closed whenever Mt Taylor is closed + the road surface is the viscous bentonite clay. My Op Ed, having ridden both sections is that they are amazing, but I don't want the hassle of the sections being perennially closed or too dangerous, so for now, they remain optional.

Before I forget, many thanks to Mathew and Scott for running the TD again, and everyone who has brought us the coverage that I've been enjoying for the last couple of weeks.
And...congrats to all the finishers (and soon-to-be finishers - especially Nathan and Peter who made the long trip from New Zealand)!

Many, many congratulations to Mike Hall for such a ride - another success for British cycling!! Also, congratulations to Jesse Carlsson, who overcame his potentially severe problems in Como to amaze us all. Well done guys! Now, who will come in next? The heat is on in more ways than one for Liam, Alex & James who are also doing so well. Keep it up for the "downhill" stretch....may the best man win (but I'm biased - cheering for James.....but also Liam & Alex!)!
