Lloyd sounds like a great guy.
In regards to the after race ride thing, it seems like it is an after race activity so the rules regarding assistance during the race should not apply. I don't want to step on anyone's toes but I have an idea about developing a list of contacts at various locations along the more popular routes for for hire ride assistance. Such a list would really help those of us who would like to do sections of some of the routes but don't have local contacts. I will bring this up in the main forum after the race is over.
I'm sure ACA would love to have such a resource list. |

To suezim : I've just listened to Cjell's last call and I really liked it; it reminded me of something that happened several days ago (places and times are sort of a blur now after following blue dots for two weeks): I noticed that my husband (Vel) was going to meet Cjell on the trail soon, so I 'stalked' them and then when they were almost parallel (as precise as blue dots can be) I took a screen shot of the "meeting of the Titans" as I called it. Call me pathetic or whatever, but knowing how he was following and admiring Cjell's performance last year - I thought of it as a situation worthy of 'documentation'. Only later I found out from him that they actually stopped and talked for a while and my husband told me Cjell was a really special and fine young man. Coming from my husband, that description alone should make you very proud parents. And when you add his accomplishment on this TDR - you should be bursting with pride! Congratulations!

Anyone know how the SS riders are geared? I keep zooming in on pics trying to get an idea. Doesn't really work. I ride and race SS all the time, but can never get my head around how I would gear for this event.

Drew is fixed, I think 39/20. I remember he was just under 2 - 1.
He said the others were pulling lower ratios. That would make downhill worse for him

We are getting ready to drive from Yuma (winter home) to NM. We're over the top excited to see our son hit the border!! Brian has certainly exceeded our expectations. We had no idea it would be this difficult and that he had this in him. Thank you to all who said such great things about him. I know we're partial but we think he's pretty darn special. :-) Forest, Leo, Markley and Liam - thanks so much for riding with him. I know he was glad to hang with such fine guys. Jesse Carlsson at Antelope Wells and restaurant in Lordsburg where I first met Matthew Lee. In fact he is sitting where Matthew was sitting. That is my ugly brother, Roger, sitting with him. Getting in the truck to go to church this morning, my wife found all of his credit cards on the floor of the truck. We drove up to Silver City and we got to see him again. He was resting peacefully at the motel.
Thanks for the nice pics! Jesse seems to have a habit of losing his credit cards; I remember he lost one in Como too. Congratulations to him with a fantastic ride. AW closes at 4 pm. It is amazing that the post with markers seems still accessible at all time, now that many US border stations have become hugh fortresses. |

So why is there no "official" information for the riders on the detours or is there? I saw that ML would be sending an email/text to riders as they get to Salida - but clearly Ethan out on the route didn't get the info.....I saw his spot on the original route last night and then he turned around and headed on the detour with no idea what to do. Is that all part of the deal? You figure it out for yourself even if there are well established detours in place?

Well said, liney. If the TD is a challenge without support, how can riders receive texts/emails if they are not carrying smart phones? Until they all finish & we hear their stories, we do not know the problems, but an official detour should, in my book, be communicated to all riders, & the fairest way for that is a notice. Is this what is done?

It's usually mentioned in the outgoing message at mtbcast, but if they don't call in they don't get it. It is available on the web, but if they don't access their email or this forum they don't get it. I suspect many of the businesses, including Absolute Bikes in Salida know and tell the riders, but if they don't stop there they don't get it.....you get the idea. In the case that a rider does not hear of an "official" detour, they are supposed to figure out the shortest possible detour and take that. |

The spotty SPOTS keep this race for third place hanging in suspense. From what I see JO was at a point 3h28m ago where LC was 2h44m ago. And AH was 59m ago at a point where LC was also 59m ago. So could JO be in a breakaway?

It looks like Alex Harris and Liam Crowley are together, with James Olsen about 30 minutes back. We're in for another incredible finish.

"Well said Liney"? You two sound a bit like you are complaining. How can there ever be official info released (mid event) in an unofficial challenge like TD? Maybe in future years riders can pay a 2,500USD entry fee to cover accident insurance and support a helicopter organizers can use to fly in the communications. These riders are on a "solo / individual adventure". Ethan rec'd the email as soon as the detour was determined, but without a domestic phone number we cannot easily text him. All the businesses in Abiquiu have been phoned and provided detour info but if a rider doesn't check in with any of them what more can be done? Mike Hall and a couple others also went to the barricade at the SFNF entrance the check conditions on the ground. What is unfair about the occasional uninformed route tangent in a 3000 mile bike ride? |
