I'm thinking Bryan Heselbach may be deviating to check out some local geology. I know I'd be tempted to do this!  The guy is taking the GDMBR route proper, as shown on the ACA maps. See a couple pages back in this thread for explanation as to why TD (and Trackleaders) follows the paved alternate from Cuba to Grants, on an annual basis. |

I love that BH is taking the Chaco Canyon route from Cuba to Grants. It is beautiful and rugged and lonely and...dirt. Wonder if he has realized his recent route-finding error, or if he is intentionally bailing on the grunt up and over the San Mateo Mountains? That climb killed me- bonking on water and calories. Only the "I'll never need it" bottle I filled at the BLM enclosure saved me until I got to San Mateo Spring near the top. It was indeed painful to gain all that elevation only to give it all back in the immediate drop into Grants. But, a section of the route not to be missed in my view- wild low desert to high wooded forests. I felt as lonely there as anywhere on the route. It is so in keeping with the spirit and ethos of the Divide route; too bad it is ridden by so few TD'ers. Check it out one day! I hope BH gets back to his missed turn and shows the San Mateos what he has left in his gas tank.

Questions:
what do guys like Mike Hall and Jesse do for a living--or others for that matter?
what do the riders do on the days after they've finished? (ride, eat, sleep, etc.....?)

Eric Foster just posted on facebook that he got food poisoning and rode 160 miles on nothing.
BMBA volunteer Robert newman picked up Alex H. and two others for the shuttle to El Paso on monday. He was pretty stoked to help out 3 world class riders.

Wow! Billy Rice is totally powering along! He is definitely going to suffer some post ride adjustment after living The Divide for 5400 odd miles.
I noticed AP on the original route earlier today but his Spot has been "massaged"? Is the original route still closed for fire purposes? What effect might this have on his race time? (Sorry if this is an uncool question or if it has been answered on another page)

Looks like AP ran the original route to that point another "geared racer" did that yesterday. my guess is the road closure has been moved down that road. This sure makes that NB SS race more interesting as SM and AP went back and forth for a while, AP has been in the lead the last week but now SM is ahead. With this little left to go - I wonder if they know where they are? when AP catches up to SM it could be a two boy race to the finish... they are both strong SS riders there is at least 100 miles of not more between those two and the 3rd place guy.. Interesting to watch!

This Tumblr has some photos and a short report about the extent of some of the damage to the Canadian section of the GDMBR. They took the Fernie Alternate and also detoured north of Elkford and Goat Creek, then rode into Canmore but were not allowed to ride the highway into Banff. Even missing most of the Flathead, some of the stuff they had to cross looks pretty rough, including crossing of fast-flowing and debris-choked streams. And for Stapps... as I said before, Mike couldn't have done it without you, the time he did... there is unbelievable motivation in pure competition between you two... know that us blue dotters appreciate all the effort you two laid down in an unbelievably short period of 7 days. I wouldn't call myself a world-class rider, but I was one of the 3 and I'd certainly say Robert is a world-class guy and one of the nicest people I've met. Trailbuilder and TDR-rider helper, riders all over the world know him and owe him now : ) Thanks Robert. A huge thanks to Roger and Lloyd P too - rolling by us on the final straight with cold cokes and friendly faces at the finish. Passed on a message from my family as I'd been riding w/o a phone, brought a tear to my eye. What a difference that made to the last moments of my TDR ride. There were times on the ride that were made by the people who go out of their way to make this race more memorable than you think it could be. |
