Sounds like you need to convert the files from routes to tracks in basecamp. Then try uploading them again to the Oregon, they should be there. Also make sure you have clicked the upload tracks tick box in the upload pop up.

You may
Question on .GPX files - I'm a mac guy, i've downloaded the ACA files for the route, but getting them to convert to readable tracks on my Garmin Oregon 450 isn't working. They have been read by Garmin and added to the part of the "route planner" .... but i need them to be added to the "track manager" ....any help would be appreciated.....
thanks in advance.

Garmins can only have 9999 data points I think. I had to open the file in something like mapsource and filter it down to under 10,000 and then it uploaded fine. Maybe that is the fix.

We're heading down in a few days to do some riding and will probably do the Border to Silver City leg.

Is there a good shuttle service in Silver City who could take us to the start?

Doc, I saw some of your other posts.  Keep in mind, riding a trike is one thing.  There are many miles of pushing, carrying and lifting your bike, which should be considering into your ride selection.  With snow fall catching up to a normal years volume and still at least a month until it peaks, you will be faced with many miles of pushing / carrying your ride through snow.

The other concern I would have with a trike would be spare parts.  If there are trike specific parts, you will want to pre-position these through the general delivery mail boxes through the USPS.

For me, I would be more inclined to bring / carry more stuff that might not really be needed on a trike. If you are touring the route, this might not be an issue.  If you are racing, this will slow you down, when the speedy ones will be flying on 34 lbs mtb's....fully loaded.

Would you post a pic on one of your trikes or what you plan on riding?  I am definitely interested.

Hi and thx for the input.

The bike I hope to ride (profile pic photo shopped image)In most irregular conditions I can ride further than a conventional mountain bike due to having three wheels. The weight is about the same as most the mountain bikes I have seen data on for TDR. Some things may be a challenge but there are so many advantages to being on three wheels in an ultra event.

Can anyone give me detailed info about route areas that may be technically challenging or impassable on a 30" width trike? I would love to see pics and video these areas. I have ridden cyclo-cross events and toured some scary roads, routes, trails in Asia and on a low trike so I can hike-a-bike and ride single track. I am particularly interested in sections that may not be physically passable with a trikes size.

I have read accounts of several recumbent and recumbent trike riders than have done the route and they had no issues on much larger heavier, and road oriented machines. But I want to get a better feel for the most demanding sections. I have ridden A-line at Whistler at 45mph on a trike, thats a groomed fire road compared to my riding in Asia.

May as well throw my name into the "hopeful" category for this year.  Should know by May if I'm a "go."  Unfinished business!  Right Vance/Phil/Bob!?

Hey Doc, you said you messaged me, but I didn't receive it.  Try me again if you like.

I'm so curious as the performance of your machine - can't wait to see it riding!

* There's a hike-a-bike section in the Canadian Flathead that has some bushwacking, as well as climbing up a very steep hunters trail. It's not rideable.
* There's a section in Montana that goes onto some fairly overgrown and forgotten jeep trails, you'll need to probably pull.
* The section above Helena gets to be a pretty rough 4x4, where you need to pick a good line.
* If the Gold Dust section south of Breckenridge is part of the course, that'll be difficult.
* The CDT section, N. of Silvercity is the only other singletrack, the soil is really prone to erosion, so I'd be careful with the trail being not so fun to ride on.

Everything else, given perfect conditions, should be rideable. If not, Many of the same rules apply, independent on mode of wheel'd transportation: snow on the mountain passes is going to lead to a ton of post holing, rain in some sections will lead to a track of mud that sucks things down into it, that sort of thing. Remember, the course was designed with tourers with BOB trailers in mind - already 3 wheels!, so it's fairly mild conditions. Those tourers will already be weighing a ton more than you will be.

Do you have a push/pull the machine strategy? Smiley

How 's the trike work in sand?

@TheArtist, Thx for the info! My only real concerns are very steep loose climbs, where traction is an issue. Or long sustained climbs where I may loose momentum and have to hike-a-bike. The only sand I have ridden is on beaches and that is where allot of recumbent trikes are used. I generally fair better than a bike in sand because i have more wheels.

Fleecer Ridge in Montana might be tough. It's like 38% grade, and pretty much unrideable.

But it's tough on everybody, it's just that it might be easier to go down that thing with a bike than a trike.
