Early flight to Calgary tomorrow, arriving around 11am.  Should be assembling the bike in Banff by midafternoon.

Dave Nice called in from Glenwood, NM! He made a special friend and is hanging out with some firefighters this morning.

Arrived Calgary last night - bike box rather crushed by British Airways. Shuttle to Banff 09:00, then unpacking to see if the bike's OK.
Had a stressful last few days of work, getting last bits of gear, and packing bike (pedals seized). After all the dramas just getting here, the race itself should be a breeze (well relatively).

Hi all,

Got into Silver City yesterday morning just as Dave was leaving town -- he was stomping up a hill and looking good.

I rode from Albuquercue to Grants and then south along the route.  Got as far as Collins Park (south of Highway 12) and faced a wall of smoke as dark as a blackboard and a road block.  Went down Forest Service Road 64 and ended up at Apache Junction which is on Highway 12.  Then went to Silver City via Reserve (still Highway 12) and then Glenwood (Highway 180).

Since you probably aren't familiar with this route here are some notes on what to expect:
Small store at Apache Junction (about 20 miles west of the intersection of the Tour Divide Route and Highway 12).
In Reserve, a small store (faucet between store and cafe), a home cooking cafe, and mexican restaurant. Reserve is the Command Center for the fire so quite busy -- lots of big equipment being moved around.  This is a problem because the route between Reserve and Glenwood (40 miles further) is narrow with no shoulder.  Be careful.  Better to time this for riding in the early morning.  Long ups and downs along this stretch.
Glenwood has a small store and a good breakfast cafe (6-11 am) and another cafe.
Road has shoulder a few miles out of Glenwood and the ride is a breeze into Silver City (about 60 miles).  A small store about 20 miles out of Glenwood.
The weather is great down here -- sorry about up there.

It is too bad about the fire re-route but this thing is massive and not to be trifled with.  It will probably burn until the monsoons hit.

Best to all of you.

Chip

There is also some fine taxidermy in the cafe in Reserve if that sort of thing blows your skirt up.

FYI: Andrew Hazen rode up to Banff from Whitefish this week. He reported around 4 miles of snow over Elk Pass.

Yep, in Canmore and the weather here is also highly variable.  Went to Spray lake today on the route, pretty chilly up there, around 2300m.  Snowing on the surrounding peaks and a few sprinkles today up at the lake.  Roads are pretty smooth and in really goo condition outside of Banff.

How's that new Ti ride?

We just did a fresh config run on the TD tracker... if you have submitted your info and think you should be on the tracker now would be a good time to check.  If you aren't renting a SPOT, send out an OK and make sure you show up on the tracker (may take a short while as we don't have it on a fast refresh rate yet).

Great to see dots all over the world, about to converge on Banff.

Just made a reservation for a shuttle with Banff Airporter.  They are giving a small discount to TD racers.

Just a reminder, if you're riding the call-in number is 888-866-4491. You can leave up to 3 minutes per call so if you need to leave more just call back.

Thanks LTrain for the info, any indication as to the depth of the snow?

Can anyone suggest a bike shop in Banff for any last minute fixes of arline damages?

Pretty sweet, very smooth ride especial for a rigid fork.  Did another little ride on a few trails around Canmore today.  I definitely want to come back here.  Place is pretty awesome.

If anyone needs help getting their bike together for the race or if they need any parts the guys at Rebound Cycle in downtown Canmore are really cool and will let you use some of their tools if you ask nicely.  They helped me put my bike together today, and gave me some free espresso and a beer.  (Don't go to the Bike Cafe, they have an attitude)

Here is their site.

Soul Ski and Bikes in downtown Banff. I think they're on Bear St.

Dave, their "chief Soul" (tall bald guy), welcomed me on the finish line of my NoBo race last year, and gave me a PBR. Best PBR ever! (tell him that if you see him!  thumbsup )

I'm about 99% sure it's Jason. also there is Jr. and Dick working there as well. I think the rest are part timers.

Yes, it's Jason, you're right.

He gave me a business card and it said Dave "Junior" on it so with my memory fading that's what I relied on. But now that you mentioned it, I remember it and Jason it is!

Anyone know why Warren Schick turned around on the route and went a different way?

My guess is that he hit snow and now is backtracking to the Fernie alt. Is he ITT'ing alright, or just doing a trial run? If there's snow, you gotta get off and walk! It looks just about the top of the first pass... Maybe he's worried that he'll be out at night in Bear County without any shelter, although Butts Cabin should be reachable from where he was. Hopefully he calls in and we can figure that out. And hopefully he understands the rules, correctly!

Ya, my understanding is that if there is snow you go through it.  But my guess is there might be something we don't know.  I think if you are doing the TDR you would be familiar with the rules, but maybe not.  Hope he figures it out.
