Hey Scott, nice to see a bit of discussion on this.
I found it very difficult to get my head around where riders were at using my phone and the limited map data [found cycle was best]. Now I'm home and have the big screen it's still been difficult ...... but the new option 'World Imagery' is as good as... also has some town and road name data. See what Dave n Dave think....
I can live without street view though it's handy when route planning.

I changed the default to an ESRI 'topo' map -- do you guys think it is any more detailed? The "Imagery" layer is pretty darn close to google's.
Yeah, that is much better thanks Scott. Nice effort Cloudrider. Shame you had to pull the pin. |

KML output is a little messier, but I was thinking about a "view in google maps" function that would open a direct link on google.com with a single marker on it, or maybe multiple markers. a live link for google earth is another idea.
There is much more map info on this format. Looks good. Not having to change to a cycle map when you scroll in too far is good too. A redirect to a dropped pin would be a nice touch. Street view and satellite imagery are a huge part of prep and spot stalking. Being able to zoom in to where spots spend significant amounts of time answers many questions when used in conjunction with weather and webcams (far too much time on my hands). |

Thanks for the support Dave. Glad the Imagery Layer is stacking up. I plan to keep looking for more options. I hear you on Streetview -- definitely a nice touch for dot stalking and figuring out why people are stopped or where they are. It's a bummer to lose. But if I can open a (free-to-us) google map that lets you then go to streetview that could be a good workaround. |

Wow. Steve has ridden almost 5000km(3100mi) in the last ~25 days and has finally hit some fairly decent hills in Barrington Tops. Talk about a sting in the tail of the TA. Unfortunately, it’s a long tail. He has a few thousand more km to go which happens to contain most of the climbing in Oz. Go Steve! I hope you have a good sense of humour!  |

Yes, Ben will be feeling that! Meanwhile, Steve is probably wishing for a bit of warmth after all the rain and cool weather around Sydney the last few days. This was yesterday out on the plains just west of where Steve is. In my 48 years I have never seen this in October!  |

Mucho respect for Steve Halligan!!  He finished the ~ 6150km (3821mi) TA earlier today!!!! Talk about focus and staying power when almost everyone else has scratched or alternated.......that was truly Epic. |

Congratulations to Steve Halligan, first rider to finish the inaugural Terra Australis Bike Epic from the tip of Cape York in Queensland to Australia’s southern most mainland point Wilsons Promontory in Victoria.
31d:9h:14m. A superb effort over a hugely diverse challenging course and distance. Probably close to 6,200k in total including route changes. From +40ºC temps in Cape York in Queensland down to below 0ºC overnight crossing the Australian Alps. This was a massive daily challenge of human endeavour that has been almost faultless in execution of navigation and endurance as the daily rhythm of riding into the late evening and away before dawn unfolded down through eastern Australia.
