Am I right in my estimation...assuming that considering the unit costs around $150 (or maybe $120 or so), and then there is a $150/year subscription, and then $15 to add it to the map...I would probably just rent it for now (assuming it's anywhere near around the same cost as last year).

Don't buy a spot until you look into the Delorme (now Garmin) InReach. Way more functional, in my opiniion,  with 2-way texting. (Of course the race requires a SPOT, so I'd just go with the rental for that.)

I vote March 24th or March 31st.

I have to teach the following two weekends.... and would have to be a late bloomer.

Just FYI, I am pretty sure Trackleaders supports DeLorme devices.

Thanks...After 5 minutes of extensive research  icon_biggrin,  I will probably eventually buy an InReach, but will rent for now if I do this event. According to this thread: http://www.bikepacking.net/forum/question-and-answer/spot-vs-inreach/, TL does support InReach although it rents SPOT units...good to know.

Trackleaders sign up and SPOT rental links will be up here around 2 weeks prior  +/- April 1st.  I will also get a take head count for the shuttle around that time.

Did a one nighter out to to the hot springs a few weeks ago. The Rey Fire burn area along Camuesa Road between Little Caliente Hot Springs and Little Pine Mountain saw some pretty significant erosion damage as a result of the fire.  Might re-route the tour route there to follow the proper route instead for this year.  Camuesa Connector Trail is still holding up though.  I have never seen so much water, every little stream is flowing right now.  When we crossed the Santa Ynez river, water depth was about 3 feet.

I was hoping to go about 30-40 miles a day, it looks like the Proper route doesn't have camping options as close to the end as the Tour route :-( The last camp I see listed on the proper route is Bluff camp (not shown on the tour route for some reason), although on the USGS overlay it lists a couple more further along ("The Pines" and then "Hidden Potrero"...am I missing any?).

Good point about camping spots.  If the tour route is done at a 2 night / 3 day pace then the ideal campground for the last night is Mono Camp right near Little Caliente Hot Springs.  The tour route will remain as is for now.  The HAB through the eroded sections of Camuesa road are not necessarily the most fun, but they are totally passable if you get off the bike and walk a little.  I might ride that section one more time before April.

"The Pines" Campground has not really existed since before the Zaca Fire.  Hidden Potrero is still there, but it got scorched in the Rey Fire.  But one could still camp there if you wanted to.

A bit of HAB is cool. I'm actually aiming for 3 nights (& allowing for 4), Toad Springs the first night (about the only option at 30-40 miles/day...the next camp isn't until SB Potrero/Oak springs), probably Mono the last night (& visit the springs), and then somewhere in between before that.

Hey Folks,
New to this event and thread, but an old hat when is comes to backpacking and bikecamping in the Los Padres.  A group of 6 of us are planning to do the TDLP this year.  We are hoping to start Saturday April 8th - 11th to avoid missing Easter with our families.  Can we still be considered for the race assuming we all use a spot and not deviate from the short course?
Thank!
Tim

Tim, I will ask Trackleaders to get the map set up, and the online registration set up before you all head out. You all of course will be counted as finishers if you all use a spot, get on the map, and finish  icon_biggrin

Let me know if anyone needs a rental spot. That takes at least a week notice.

That's GREAT news!  We will need to rent 5 spot devices.  Our sixth member has a Delorme which should work...  Can't wait for this adventure!!!!! thumbsup

Hi Erin - I'm planning on doing the TDLP official route this year at the regular start time. (I'll be on vacation around April 1 when you poll. Sign me up for the taxi also.)

I think I'm going to try meet up with my husband & daughter at Rock Front on night 2 (I did some calculations & I'm pretty sure I won't be able to make it to Miranda Pines that night). I'm not sure what would trigger a DNF (water? steak dinner? sleeping in a motorhome? Drop bag?) But it might be worth it :)  He can offer this to other riders also (except the sleeping part) but would have to work out timing details - that is, he'd probably be limited to mid-day Sat to Sun afternoon. Which is Easter, wow. That calls for a big Easter breakfast.
Best,
Marin

To be counted as a finisher please carry everything you need, and/ or stop for support only from the stores and restaurants that you will pass by on the first day (in Pine Mountain Club and Ventucopa).

TimWilder, I will get the Trackleaders sign up ready by early next week for you and your friend's April 7th departure.  SPOTs usually take about 1 week to arrive, so plan to sign up by next Wed. or so if you need rental SPOTs.

There is definitely some erosion damage in various areas from the huge storm we got a month ago along various sections of the route.  Here is a wash out on Santa Barbara Canyon Road (tour route).

I rode various trails and roads from Colson Canyon Road (near Sisquoc) to Miranda Pines Camp and back several weeks ago.  Not too much erosion in that part of the forest, but LOTS of wet stream crossings down low.
